Abstract

A battery housing includes a heat spreader, a thermal interface that contacts a surface of the heat spreader, and a battery frame that is configured to hold a plurality of battery cells. When a battery cell is inserted into the battery frame, the thermal interface contacts the cell at the same end as the cell'"'"'s negative terminal. As a result, the thermal interface allows heat to be transferred between the battery cell and the heat spreader. It is advantageous to make a thermal connection at the end with the negative terminal because the internal jelly roll structure of the battery cell causes the cell to have a higher thermal conductivity at its negative terminal.

Claims

2. A battery assembly comprising:

a plurality of battery cells, each battery cell including a positive terminal at a first end of the battery cell and a negative terminal at a second end of the battery cell, the second end opposite to the first end;

a heat spreader formed of a thermally conductive material; and

a thermal interface positioned between the second ends of the battery cells and the heat spreader, the thermal interface comprising a single layer of a material that thermally couples the second ends of the battery cells to the heat spreader.

1. An electric motorcycle comprising:

an electric motor used to drive the motorcycle; and

a battery assembly that provides electrical power to the electric motor, the battery assembly comprising;

a plurality of battery cells, each battery cell including a positive terminal at a first end of the battery cell and a negative terminal at a second end of the battery cell, the second end opposite to the first end;

a heat spreader formed of a thermally conductive material; and

a thermal interface positioned between the second ends of the battery cells and the heat spreader, the thermal interface comprising a single layer of a material that thermally couples the second ends of the battery cells to the heat spreader.

3. The battery assembly of claim 2, wherein the thermal interface comprises a material that contacts the second ends of the battery cells and is substantially electrically non-conductive.

4. The battery assembly of claim 2, wherein the thermal interface comprises:

a material that contacts the second ends of the battery cells and is substantially electrically conductive; and

a coating between said material and the heat spreader, the coating inhibiting electrical conduction between the battery cells and the heat spreader.

5. The battery assembly of claim 2, wherein the heat spreader comprises a substantially flat piece of thermally conductive material having a first side and a second side, the first side contacting the thermal interface.

6. The battery assembly of claim 2, wherein the heat spreader comprises:

a substantially flat piece of thermally conductive material having a first side and a second side, the first side contacting the thermal interface and the second side including one or more indentations; and

one or more pieces of heat transfer material positioned in the indentations, wherein the heat transfer material has a higher thermal conductivity than the thermally conductive material.

7. The battery assembly of claim 2, wherein the heat spreader is a two-phase heat transfer device.

8. The battery assembly of claim 2, further comprising:

a second plurality of battery cells, each battery cell including a positive terminal at a first end of the battery cell and a negative terminal at a second end of the battery cell, the second end opposite to the first end;

a second thermal interface positioned between the second ends of the second battery cells and the heat spreader, the second thermal interface thermally coupling the second ends of the second battery cells to the heat spreader;

wherein the heat spreader has two sides and the two thermal interfaces are thermally coupled to different sides of the heat spreader.

9. The battery assembly of claim 2, further comprising:

a battery enclosure thermally coupled to the heat spreader, wherein the battery cells are positioned inside the battery enclosure.

10. The battery assembly of claim 9, wherein the battery enclosure comprises a plurality of ridges formed on an external surface of the battery enclosure.

11. The battery assembly of claim 2, wherein the battery assembly contains at least 126 battery cells.

14. The battery assembly of claim 2, wherein the battery cells are capable of producing a voltage of between 2.0 volts and 4.2 volts.

15. The battery assembly of claim 2, wherein the battery cells are capable of producing a current of between −

9 amperes and 20 amperes.

16. The battery assembly of claim 2, wherein the battery cells are positioned so that the second ends of the battery cells are coplanar.

17. The battery assembly of claim 2, wherein the battery assembly is configured to fit in a frame of a motorcycle and the battery cells are sufficient to power the motorcycle.

15-1. The battery assembly of claim 2, wherein the battery cells are hexagonally packed.

18. A battery assembly comprising:

a battery means having a negative terminal means;

a means for spreading heat; and

a thermal interface means positioned between the negative terminal means and the heat spreading means, the thermal interface means for thermally coupling the negative terminal means to the heat spreading means.
