Abstract

An inductive power receiver including a resonant circuit, a rectifier, a rectified current sense, and a communication and control unit includes a communications modulator and at least one signal generator operable to generate a set of communication signals including a series of pulses generated at characteristic frequencies. Communication signals provide instructions for an inductive power outlet to regulate power transfer to the inductive power receiver.

Claims

1. A control circuit for an inductive power receiver, comprising:

a resonant circuit connected to a secondary coil configured to inductively couple with a primary coil of an inductive power outlet, said resonant circuit having a characteristic resonant peak at a frequency lower than an operational frequency of the inductive power outlet such that operating at a higher frequency reduces the amount of power transferred;

a rectifier;

a rectified current sense;

a communication and control unit operable to communicate power control instructions to the inductive power outlet comprising;

at least one communications modulator operable to create at least a first state and a second state such that transitioning from said first state to said second state produces a detectable change at the primary coil of the inductive power outlet; and

at least one signal generator operable to generate communication signals comprising a series of pulses generated at a characteristic frequency f.

2. The control circuit of claim 1 wherein each said communication signal comprises a pulse comprising a fixed duration t_s of high logical state followed by a second duration (1/f−

t_s) of low logical state.

3. The control circuit of claim 1, wherein said communication and control unit is operable to select at least one of a power decrease signal, and a power increase signal.

4. The control circuit of claim 1, wherein said communication and control unit is operable to select a power perpetuation signal

5. The control circuit of claim 1, wherein said communication and control unit is operable to select a termination signal.

6. The control circuit of claim 1 wherein said characteristic frequency is selected from 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 4 kHz, 6 kHz and 8 kHz.

7. The control circuit of claim 1 further comprising at least one activator configured to trigger said inductive power outlet.

8. The control circuit of claim 7, wherein said activator comprises at least one magnetic material detectable by a Hall Effect sensor.

The control circuit of claim 7, wherein said activator comprises at least one magnetic material selected such that when the inductive power receiver is placed adjacent to a surface, a 40 Gauss difference in magnetic field is detectable by a Hall Effect sensor situated 2 millimeters behind said surface and within a radius of 4 millimeters.

10. The control circuit of claim 7, wherein said activator is operable to respond to a ping by transmitting a communication signal having a characteristic frequency of 8 kHz.

11. The control circuit of claim 7, wherein said activator is operable to respond to a ping by transmitting a termination signal if an end-of-charge condition is detected.

12. The control circuit of claim 1, wherein said communications modulator comprises an ancillary load.

13. A method for transferring power inductively from an inductive power outlet to an inductive power receiver having a resonant circuit including a secondary coil configured to inductively couple with a primary coil of the inductive power outlet, the resonant circuit having a characteristic resonant peak at a frequency lower than an operational frequency of the inductive power outlet such that operating at a higher frequency reduces the amount of power transferred, the inductive power receive also including a rectifier, a rectified current sense, and a communication and control unit operable to communicate power control instructions to the inductive power outlet, the inductive power outlet including at least one communications modulator operable to create at least a first state and a second state such that transitioning from said first state to said second state produces a detectable change at the primary coil of the inductive power outlet, and at least one signal generator operable to generate communication signals comprising a series of pulses generated at a characteristic frequency f;

the method comprising;

detecting an activation voltage induced across said secondary inductive coil of the inductive power receiver;

sending an identification signal from the inductive power receiver using the communication and control unit for receipt by the inductive power outlet;

receiving power vie the secondary coil of the inductive power receiver;

comparing secondary coil voltage of the inductive power receiver to reference values using a regulator of the inductive power receiver; and

periodically sending at least one instruction signal from the communication and control unit of the inductive power receiver for receipt by the inductive power outlet during power transfer.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein periodically sending comprises said signal generator generating a communication signal having a characteristic frequency of 8 kHz.

15. The method of claim 13 wherein periodically sending comprises said signal generator generating at least one communication signal selected from a power decrease signal, and a power increase signal.

16. The method of claim 13 wherein periodically sending comprises said signal generator generating at least one power perpetuation signal.

17. The method of claim 13 wherein periodically sending comprises said signal generator generating at least one termination signal.

18. The method of claim 13 wherein said characteristic frequency is selected from 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 4 kHz, 6 kHz and 8 kHz.

19. The method of claim 13 wherein each said communication signal comprises a pulse comprising a fixed duration t_s of high logical state followed by a second duration (1/f−

t_s) of low logical state.

20. The method of claim 13 further comprising:

said inductive power receiver detecting an end-of-charge condition; and

said communication and control unit transmitting a termination signal.

21. A method for transferring power inductively from an inductive power outlet to an inductive power receiver, comprising:

detecting an activation voltage induced across a secondary inductive coil of said inductive power receiver;

said inductive power receiver sending an identification signal to the inductive power outlet;

said inductive power receiver receiving power from said inductive power outlet;

a regulator of said inductive power receiver comparing secondary voltage to reference values; and

during power transfer said inductive power receiver periodically sending at least one instruction signal to the inductive power outlet.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein said instruction signal is selected from at least one of a power decrease signal, and a power increase signal.

23. The method of claim 21 wherein said instruction signal comprises a power perpetuation signal.

24. The method of claim 21 wherein said instruction signal comprises a termination signal.

25. The method of claim 21 wherein the step of said inductive power receiver sending an identification signal comprises:

a communications modulator transitioning from a first state to a second state at a rate of 8 kHz thereby producing a detectable change at the primary coil.

26. The method of claim 21 wherein the step of said receiver periodically sending at least one instruction signal to the inductive power outlet comprises:

a communications modulator transitioning from a first state to a second state at a characteristic frequency selected from 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 4 kHz, 6 kHz and 8 kHz.

27. The method of claim 21 further comprising said inductive power receiver detecting an end-of-charge condition and sending a termination signal to said inductive power outlet.
