Abstract

An implant strip is disclosed. In some cases, the prosthesis can take the form of an implant strip that may be implanted through the use of a surgical procedure that minimizes incision sizes and may be considered less invasive than typical spinal implant procedures. The implant strip includes provisions for implantation, including teeth, spacing provisions, and various shapes.

Claims

1. A spinal prosthesis comprising:

an implant strip having a first longitudinal edge and a second longitudinal edge;

a deflecting portion extending laterally between the first longitudinal edge and the second longitudinal edge,

wherein the deflecting portion deflects under a compressive force applied laterally to the implant strip such that the first longitudinal edge and the second longitudinal edge move toward each other; and

a motion limiting device laterally between the first longitudinal edge and the second longitudinal edge,

wherein the motion limiting device stops movement of the first longitudinal edge and the second longitudinal edge toward each other under the compressive load and thereby stops the deflection of the deflecting portion.

2. The spinal prosthesis of claim 1, wherein the motion limiting device comprises a motion limiting tab that extends laterally between the first longitudinal edge and the second longitudinal edge and is disposed adjacent to the deflecting portion in a longitudinal direction.

3. The spinal prosthesis of claim 1, wherein the motion limiting device comprises a motion limiting tab disposed within the deflecting portion.

4. The spinal prosthesis of claim 1, wherein the motion limiting device comprises a structure that contacts the deflecting portion and stops the deflection of the deflecting portion.

The spinal prosthesis of claim 4, wherein the deflecting portion comprises a first deflecting portion, wherein the spinal prosthesis comprises a second deflecting portion disposed longitudinally adjacent to the first deflecting portion, and wherein the structure comprises the second deflecting portion, which the first deflecting portion contacts.

6. The spinal prosthesis of claim 1, wherein the implant strip comprises a first longitudinal strip having the first longitudinal edge and a second longitudinal strip having the second longitudinal edge.

The spinal prosthesis of claim 6, wherein the deflecting portion is shaped as an ellipse and comprises a first elliptical member that connects the first longitudinal strip to the second longitudinal strip, and a second elliptical member that is longitudinally opposite to the first elliptical member and connects the first longitudinal strip to the second longitudinal strip.
