Abstract

A vehicle rental transaction system and method which provide a vehicle lot owner with a choice of options for vehicle security and customer convenience. The vehicle rental transaction system includes a computer for identifying a customer as part of a rental transaction involving a vehicle, and for sending a wireless message to the vehicle containing instructions for preparing the vehicle for the customer. Example instructions include, but are not limited to, unlocking doors and a trunk of the vehicle, adjusting power seats and power mirrors in accordance with customer preferences, adjusting climate control settings in accordance with the customer preferences, adjusting radio station settings in accordance with the customer preferences, and adjusting GPS settings in accordance with the customer preferences.

21. A vehicle rental transaction system comprising:

a self-service terminal having memory and one or more processors; and

vehicle rental transaction software residing as instructions in the memory and executing on the one or more processors and configured for receiving customer identification information as part of a rental transaction involving a customer and a vehicle, for obtaining customer preferences, for generating a document for delivery to the customer, and for sending a message to the vehicle containing instructions for preparing the vehicle for the customer based upon the customer preferences in response to generation of the document.

The system of claim 21, wherein the vehicle rental transaction software is also configured for obtaining configuration data associated with available vehicles, for displaying available vehicles and corresponding configuration data, for receiving a customer choice of a displayed vehicle, and for receiving customer preferences for configuring the chosen vehicle.

23. The system of claim 21, wherein the document comprises a receipt following completion of the rental transaction.

24. The system of claim 21, wherein the vehicle rental transaction software is configured to send the message to the vehicle after a predetermined time delay approximating a walk time to the vehicle.

25. The system of claim 21, wherein the vehicle rental transaction software is configured to send another message to the vehicle after a predetermined time delay containing other instructions for preparing the vehicle for the customer.

26. The system of claim 21, wherein the instructions comprise operating a power seat and power mirrors in accordance with customer preferences.

27. The system of claim 21, wherein the instructions comprise operating a climate control system in accordance with customer preferences.

28. The system of claim 21, wherein the instructions comprise operating a seat heating pad in accordance with customer preferences.

29. The system of claim 21, wherein the instructions comprise operating a GPS in accordance with customer preferences.

30. The system of claim 21, wherein the instructions comprise operating a radio in accordance with customer preferences.

31. The system of claim 25, wherein the other instructions comprise operating a vehicle light to assist the customer in locating the vehicle.

32. The system of claim 25, wherein the other instructions comprise operating a vehicle horn to assist the customer in locating the vehicle.

33. The system of claim 25, wherein the other instructions comprise operating unlocking a vehicle door.

34. A vehicle rental transaction system comprising:

a self-service terminal having memory and one or more processors; and

vehicle rental transaction software residing as instructions in the memory and executing on the one or more processors and configured for receiving customer identification information as part of a rental transaction with a customer involving a vehicle, for obtaining customer preferences, for generating a document for delivery to the customer, for sending a first message to the vehicle containing first instructions for preparing the vehicle for the customer based upon the customer preferences in response to generation of the document, and for sending a second message to the vehicle containing second instructions for preparing the vehicle for the customer based upon the customer preferences after a predetermined time delay from the first message approximating a walk time to the vehicle.

35. A vehicle rental transaction system comprising:

a self-service terminal having memory and one or more processors; and

vehicle rental transaction software residing as instructions in the memory and executing on the one or more processors and configured for receiving customer identification information as part of a rental transaction involving a customer and a vehicle, for obtaining luggage information from the customer, and for sending a message to the vehicle including instructions for unlatching a trunk of the vehicle based upon the luggage information.

36. A vehicle rental transaction system comprising:

a self-service terminal having memory and one or more processors; and

vehicle rental transaction software residing as instructions in the memory and executing on the one or more processors and configured for receiving customer identification information as part of a rental transaction involving a customer and a vehicle, for obtaining local weather information, and for sending a message to the vehicle including instructions for setting a climate control system of the vehicle based upon the local weather information.

37. The system of claim 36, further comprising:

obtaining vehicle inside temperature preferences from the customer;

wherein the instructions for setting the climate control system are also based upon the vehicle inside temperature preferences.
