Abstract

Systems and methods for segmenting a period of time into identification of locations of a user who performs activities are described. One of the methods includes detecting activity of a monitoring device worn by the user. The activity includes an amount of movement of the monitoring device. The activity is performed for a period of time. The method further includes obtaining geo-location data for the monitoring device and storing, during the period of time, the detected activity and corresponding geo-location data. The method also includes analyzing the detected activity and the corresponding geo-location data to identify one or more events. Each event is associated with a group of activity data and one or more of the groups of activity data is associated with an identifier, which is obtained using the geo-location data.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

detecting activity of a monitoring device that is configured to be worn by a user, the activity including an amount of movement of the monitoring device and the activity performed for a period of time;

obtaining geo-location data for the monitoring device;

storing, during the period of time, the detected activity and corresponding geo-location data; and

analyzing the detected activity and the corresponding geo-location data to identify one or more events, each event being associated with a group of activity data and one or more of the groups of activity data being associated with an identifier, the identifier obtained using the geo-location data.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising identifying within the event a time of entry or exit of the location by the monitoring device.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising combining amounts of time of a common activity over a period of time to indicate a combined amount of time for which the common activity is performed.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising combining activity levels of one or more activities over a period of time to indicate a combined activity level of the activities.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

combining amounts of time of one or more activities performed at a common location over one or more time periods to indicate a combined amount of time for which the activities are performed at the common location.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

combining activity levels of performance of the activities at a common location over one or more periods of time.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving from the user a boundary of the location, the boundary including at least one longitude and latitude of the monitoring device other than a longitude and latitude of the monitoring device identified by a device locator of the monitoring device.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving from a user a radius of the location.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the detected activity includes running, or walking, or jogging, or sleeping, or a sports activity, or sleep, or a combination thereof.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the monitoring device is wearable as a watch, or a wrist band, or a clip.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the user is a person or an animal.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the amount of movement includes an amount of movement of a body part of the user.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the period of time includes a portion of an hour, or a portion of a day, or a day, or a portion of a month, or a month, or a portion of a year, or a year, or a portion of a number of years, or a number of years.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the geo-location data includes a latitude and a longitude of the monitoring device.

15. A method comprising:

detecting activity of a monitoring device that is configured to be worn by a user, the activity including an amount of movement of the monitoring device and the activity occurring for a period of time;

obtaining geo-location data for the monitoring device;

storing, during the period of time, the detected activity and corresponding geo-location data; and

transferring, from time to time, the detected activity corresponding to the geo-location data to a computing device,

wherein the detected activity and the corresponding geo-location data are used to define one or more events, each event being associated with a group of activity data and one or more of the groups of activity data being associated with an identifier.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein transferring from time to time comprises sending the detected activity periodically or aperiodically.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein transferring from time to time comprises sending the detected activity via a wired medium or a wireless medium.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein the detected activity corresponding to the geo-location data includes the detected activity at a time the monitoring device is located at the geo-location.

19. A portable apparatus comprising:

a motion sensor for determining an amount of movement of a user, the user having a user account;

a time measurement device coupled to the motion sensor, the time measurement device for determining a time period during which the movement occurred;

a device locator coupled to the time measurement device, the device locator for determining one or more geo-locations of the user during the time period;

a processor coupled to the device locator, the processor for determining a group of activity data over the period of time and a location of the user over the period of time based on the amount of movement or the geo-locations, the processor for associating the activity data and the location with the user account.

20. The portable apparatus of claim 19, wherein the processor allows access to the activity data and the location when the user account is accessed.

21. A method comprising:

receiving motion data from an activity tracker, the motion data captured for a period of time;

receiving geo-location data for the activity tracker, the geo-location being captured during the period of time;

analyzing the motion data captured during the period of time, the analyzing acting to group one or more portions of the motion data, each portion having similar motion characteristics;

associating at least one portion of the motion data to a location identified from the geo-location data;

identifying a graphical identifier that is descriptive of the motion data for the at least one portion that is associated to the location; and

sending data to a device for display of the motion data and the graphical identifier.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the motion data is associated with multiple positions of the monitoring device.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein the activity tracker includes a watch, or a wristband, or a bracelet.

24. The method of claim 21, wherein the period of time includes a portion of a day or a portion of an hour.

25. The method of claim 21, wherein the geo-location data includes a latitude, or a longitude, or an altitude, or a combination thereof.

26. The method of claim 21, wherein analyzing the motion data captured during the period of time comprises:

determining activity levels based on the motion data and the period of time; and

determining a number of activities performed by the user while wearing the activity tracker based on the activity levels.

27. The method of claim 21, wherein the one or more portions of the group include one or more activity levels identifying an activity.

28. The method of claim 21, wherein the similar motion characteristics include activity levels that identify an activity performed while wearing the activity tracker.

29. The method of claim 21, wherein associating the at least one portion of the motion data to the location identified from the geo-location data comprises determining that an activity identified based on the at least one portion of the motion data is performed at the location.

30. The method of claim 21, wherein the graphical identifier includes an icon, or a symbol, or an animation, or a video, or a multimedia.
