For example, methods and materials for detecting the presence of an expanded number (e.g., greater than 30, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, 450, 500, 550, 600, 650, 700, or more copies) of a hexanucleotide repeat (e.g., GGGGCC) in the non-coding region of a C9ORF72 gene are provided.
