Abstract

An occlusion device delivery system can deliver an expandable coiled implant using a catheter. A distal portion of the catheter has proximal and distal apertures extending through a wall of the catheter. The expandable coiled implant is wound about the distal portion and has a proximal section that extends within the proximal aperture and a distal section that can extend radially within the distal aperture. Further, the system has an elongate member that extends through the lumen and engages and radially restrains the at least one of the proximal and distal sections within its respective aperture while engaged with the member.

Claims

1. An occlusion device delivery system, comprising:

a catheter having a lumen extending between distal and proximal sections, the distal section having proximal and distal apertures extending through a wall of the catheter;

an elongate member extending through the lumen and engaging and radially restraining a portion of an implant within the proximal or distal aperture;

a handle coupled to the proximal section; and

a slider member coupled to the handle and to the elongate member, the slider member being movable to cause disengagement of the elongate member from the implant portion.

The system of claim 1, further comprising a second elongate member and a second slider member, the second elongate member extending through the lumen and engaging and radially restraining another portion of the implant within the proximal or distal aperture, the second slider member coupled to the handle and to the second elongate member, the second slider member being movable to cause disengagement of the second elongate member from the other portion of the implant.

The system of claim 2, further comprising first and second clips each having an engagement portion for coupling to the handle, the first clip being configured to restrain longitudinal movement of the first slider member relative to the handle, the second clip being configured to restrain longitudinal movement of the second slider member relative to the handle.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the handle comprises first and second slots configured to be coupled with the respective engagement portions of the first and second clips.

5. The system of claim 1, further comprising an expandable coiled implant, wound about the distal section, having a proximal portion that extends within the proximal aperture and a distal portion that extends radially within the distal aperture.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the at least one of the proximal or distal portions have a respective end that is configured to extend radially out of its respective aperture while engaged with the member.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the respective end is larger than the respective proximal or distal portion extending through the aperture.

8. The system of claim 5, wherein the proximal portion has a reduced cross-sectional segment that is configured to extend within the proximal aperture.

9. The system of claim 5, wherein the distal portion has a reduced cross-sectional segment that is configured to extend within the distal aperture while the implant is coiled about the distal portion.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein the reduced cross-sectional segment comprises a notch, the notch and the aperture each having substantially equal lengths, transverse to an axis of the lumen.

11. The system of claim 5, wherein the implant, when coiled about the distal portion, comprises a lumen and at least one of the proximal or distal portions extend across the implant lumen.

12. The system of claim 5, wherein the implant, when coiled about the distal portion, extends between the proximal and distal apertures along a generally helical path and at least one of the proximal or distal portions bends radially inwardly from the helical path.

13. The system of claim 5, wherein the proximal and distal portions extend across the catheter lumen.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the proximal and distal portions extend across the lumen less than a diameter of the lumen.

15. The system of claim 5, wherein the elongate member extends through the catheter lumen and between at least one of the proximal or distal portions its respective aperture.

16. The system of claim 5, wherein the elongate member engages both the proximal and distal portions.

17. The system of claim 1, wherein, upon proximal withdrawal of the elongate member through the catheter lumen, the elongate member is configured to disengage and radially release the implant portion from its respective aperture.

18. The system of claim 1, wherein the elongate member comprises a wire.

19. The system of claim 1, wherein the apertures comprise slots that are transverse to an axis of the lumen.

20. A method of delivering an occlusion device in a blood vessel, the method comprising:

advancing a catheter in a vessel to position within the vessel an expandable coiled implant, wound about a distal section of the catheter, the distal section having proximal and distal apertures extending through a wall of the catheter, the implant having a proximal portion that extends radially within the proximal aperture and a distal portion that extends radially within the distal aperture;

removing a first clip from a handle assembly to permit movement of a first slider of the handle assembly to proximally withdraw an elongate member;

proximally retracting the first slider to proximally withdraw the elongate member extending through a lumen of the catheter to disengage and radially release at least one of the implant proximal or distal portions from its respective aperture.

The method of claim 20, wherein the implant proximal portion is engaged and radially restrained by the elongate member, and the implant distal portion is engaged and radially restrained by a second elongate member extending through the lumen, and further comprising proximally withdrawing the second elongate member to disengage and radially release the implant distal portion from its respective aperture.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

removing a second clip from the handle assembly to permit movement of a second slider of the handle assembly; and

proximally retracting the second slider to proximally withdraw the second elongate member.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the steps of removing a second clip and proximally retracting the second slider are performed after the first slider has been proximally retracted.
