Abstract

Remote tamper detection. At least some of the example embodiments are methods including: tracking location of an asset by an onboard device mechanically coupled to the asset, the onboard device electrically coupled to a source of power of the asset, and the onboard device receiving power from the asset; detecting a loss of power provided to the onboard device, the loss of power indicative of tampering with the onboard device, and the detecting by the onboard device; and sending a message by wireless transmission, the message indicative of tampering with the onboard device, and the sending by the onboard device during the loss of power.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

tracking location of an asset by an onboard device mechanically coupled to the asset, the onboard device electrically coupled to a source of power of the asset, and the onboard device receiving power from the asset;

detecting a loss of power provided to the onboard device, the loss of power indicative of tampering with the onboard device, and the detecting by the onboard device; and

sending a message by wireless transmission, the message indicative of tampering with the onboard device, and the sending by the onboard device during the loss of power.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

during a period of time when the onboard device is receiving power from the asset, charging a supercapacitor of the onboard device; and

then

during the loss of power period of time when the asset is not providing power to the onboard device, sending the message based on power derived from the supercapacitor.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising providing power to at least portion of the onboard device by the supercapacitor for at least 3 seconds after the loss of power from the asset.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein sending the message further comprises:

receiving signals indicative of a location of the onboard device at the time of loss of power, the receiving by the onboard device; and

sending an indication of location of the onboard device, the location derived from the signals.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein sending further comprises sending a last known location of the onboard device prior to the loss of power.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein sending the message further comprises sending the message including an indication of a last known voltage provided by the asset prior to the loss of power.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein sending the message further comprises sending the message including an indication of a trend of voltage provided by the asset prior to the loss of power.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein detecting loss of power indicative of tamper further comprises detecting a loss of power when, within a predetermined time prior to the loss of power, the voltage of a battery of the asset indicates charged state.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the predetermined time is one minute.

10. The method of claim 1 further comprising sending message by wireless transmission when power from the asset to the onboard device is restored.

11. The method of claim 1 further comprising, responsive to detecting loss of power, powering off at least one component of the onboard device not involved in sending the message.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein sending the message further comprises sending the message to at least one selected from the group consisting of:

a remote operations center;

an administrative agent;

a lender; and

a vehicle dealership.

13. A system comprising:

an onboard device configured to couple to an asset, the onboard device comprising;

a processor;

a wireless interface coupled to the processor;

a global positioning receiver coupled to the processor;

a supercapacitor coupled to the processor;

a memory coupled to the processor, the memory storing a program that, when executed by the processor, causes the processor to;

receive signals indicative of a location of the onboard device;

detect a power loss to the onboard device; and

then

issue an alert, the issuing by a wireless transmission powered by the supercapacitor.

14. The system of claim 13 wherein the supercapacitor has a capacitive density of at least 3 millifarads per cubic millimeter

15. The system of claim 13 further comprising:

wherein during a period of time when the onboard device is receiving power from the asset, the supercapacitor is charged by power from the asset; and

then

wherein the program further causes the processor to, after the detection of the power loss, send the alert based on power derived from the supercapacitor.

16. The system of claim 15 wherein the supercapacitor further provides power to at least a portion of the onboard device for at least 3 seconds after the power loss.

17. The system of claim 13 wherein when the processor issues the alert, the program further causes the processor to issue an indication of location of the onboard device, the location derived from the signals.

18. The system of claim 13 wherein when the processor issues the alert, the program further causes the processor to issue an indication of a last known voltage provided by the asset prior to the power loss.

19. The system of claim 13 wherein when the processor issues the alert, the program further causes the processor to issue an indication of a trend of voltage provided by the asset prior to the power loss.

20. The system of claim 13 wherein the program further causes the processor to issue the alert by wireless transmission when power from the asset to the onboard device is restored.

21. The system of claim 13 wherein, responsive to detecting the power loss, the program further causes the processor to power off at least one component of the onboard device not involved in issuing the alert.

22. The system of claim 13 wherein when the processor issues the alert, the program further causes the processor to issue the alert to at least one selected from the group consisting of:

a remote operations center;

an administrative agent;

a lender; and

a vehicle dealership.
