Abstract

An apparatus and method for musical instruments with multiple vibrating elements where multiple-channel electronic signal handling and processing is used to produce diverse musical timbre, effects, and control. A plurality of vibrating elements are coupled, individually or in distinct possibly overlapping groups, to sense transducers which are in turn used to drive signal processors and/or vibration stimulating drive transducers. Sense transducer signals may be mixed prior to signal processing and signal processor outputs may be mixed prior to final system output. All mixing and signal processing can be controlled dynamically, and/or by pre-programming. The invention provides for drive transducers to be electromagnetic and/or piezo, for visual indicators (such as LEDs) to show the activity of each drive transducer, and for the drive transducers to be fed signals from an external source. The invention also provides for overtones in signals from sense transducers to be used to derive control signals for controlling synthesizers, lighting, signal processors, etc., for example via MIDI.

Claims

1. A wearable gesture based control device comprising:

a first apparatus having one or more attachment portions;

a processor; and

at least one sensor coupled to the first apparatus configured to measure signals associated with at least one of;

a position, posture, and activity;

wherein the processor is communicatively linked to the at least one sensor,

wherein the signals are processed by the processor to generate control signals for controlling a second apparatus, the processor configured to interpret at least one gesture from a sequence of the control signals to generate at least one gesture control signal, wherein the at least one gesture control signal controls the second apparatus through a wireless transmission medium.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one sensor is selected from a group consisting of:

a position sensor, orientation sensor, pressure sensor, motion sensor, velocity sensor, optical sensor, skin resistance sensor, tension sensor, strain sensor, torsion sensor, light sensor, proximity sensor, temperature sensor, muscle activity sensor, impact sensor, electromagnetic sensor, and an environmental sensor.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one gesture interpreted from the sequence of the control signals is a free space gesture.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the first apparatus is a digital electronic device.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the second apparatus is a digital electronic device.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the second apparatus is a computing device.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the second apparatus is a robotic device.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the second apparatus is a movable device.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein the second apparatus is a device comprising a camera.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein the second apparatus is a device comprising software configured to control a video display.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein the second apparatus is a lighting structure.

12. The device of claim 1, wherein the one or more attachment portions is an article of clothing.

13. The device of claim 1, wherein the one or more attachment portions is a jewelry item.

14. The device of claim 1, wherein the one or more attachment portions is a strap.

15. The device of claim 1, wherein the one or more attachment portions is an adhesive pad.

16. The device of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to interpret the at least one gesture as being a movement of a body.

17. The device of claim 16, wherein the movement of the body comprises movement of at least one hand associated with the body.

18. The device of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to interpret the at least one gesture as being a movement of an object.

19. The device of claim 1, wherein the first apparatus has a surface comprising a touch sensitive user input device.

20. The device of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to perform data entry via the wireless transmission medium.

21. A wearable gesture based computing device comprising:

a first apparatus having one or more attachment portions;

a processor;

a touchpad configured to receive touch input; and

at least one sensor coupled to the first apparatus configured to measure signals associated with at least one of;

a position, posture, and activity;

wherein the processor is communicatively linked to the at least one sensor,

wherein the signals and the touch input are processed by the processor to generate control signals for controlling a second apparatus, the processor configured to interpret at least one gesture from a sequence of the control signals to generate at least one gesture control signal, wherein the at least one gesture control signal controls the second apparatus.

22. The device of claim 21, wherein the at least one sensor is selected from a group consisting of:

a position sensor, orientation sensor, pressure sensor, motion sensor, velocity sensor, optical sensor, skin resistance sensor, tension sensor, strain sensor, torsion sensor, light sensor, proximity sensor, temperature sensor, muscle activity sensor, impact sensor, electromagnetic sensor, environmental sensor, and an inertial sensor.

23. The device of claim 21, wherein the one or more attachment portions is the second apparatus.

24. The device of claim 21, wherein the second apparatus is selected from a group consisting of:

a display, a microphone, a camera, a video camera, a projector, a speaker, a prism, a video signal processing element, a lighting source, a video signal routing element, a video signal synthesis element, a computing device, a movable device, and a power source.

25. The device of claim 21, wherein the at least one gesture control signal controls the second apparatus through a wireless transmission medium.
