Abstract

A battery with a sulfur-containing cathode, an anode, and a separator between the cathode and the anode has a coating comprising a single-lithium ion conductor on at least one of the cathode or the separator.

Claims

1. A battery comprising a sulfur-containing cathode, an anode, and a separator between the cathode and the anode, wherein the cathode has a coating comprising a single-lithium ion conductor.

2. A battery according to claim 1, wherein the single-lithium ion conductor comprises a polymeric lithium salt.

3. An electrode according to claim 2, wherein the polymeric lithium salt is a lithium salt of a sulfonated tetrafluoroethylene-based fluoropolymer copolymer.

4. An electrode according to claim 2, wherein the polymeric lithium salt is a polymer having a polysulfone backbone with pendent lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide groups.

5. A battery according to claim 1, wherein the coating comprises a binder and the single-lithium ion conductor comprises an inorganic sulfide, oxide, or phosphate lithium-ion conductor.

6. A battery according to claim 5, wherein the single-lithium ion conductor comprises fibers of at least one of Li2S—

P2S5 glass-ceramics, thio-LISICON, and lithium garnet oxides.

7. A battery according to claim 1, wherein the battery has a lithium-containing anode or a silicon-containing anode.

15. A device comprising a battery according to claim 1.

8. A battery comprising a sulfur-containing cathode, an anode, and a separator between the cathode and the anode, wherein the separator has a coating comprising a single-lithium ion conductor.

9. A battery according to claim 8, wherein the single-lithium ion conductor comprises a polymeric lithium salt.

10. An electrode according to claim 9, wherein the polymeric lithium salt is a lithium salt of a sulfonated tetrafluoroethylene-based fluoropolymer copolymer.

11. An electrode according to claim 9, wherein the polymeric lithium salt is a polymer having a polysulfone backbone with pendent lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide groups.

12. A battery according to claim 8, wherein the coating comprises a binder and the single-lithium ion conductor comprises an inorganic sulfide, oxide, or phosphate lithium-ion conductor.

13. A battery according to claim 12, wherein the single-lithium ion conductor comprises fibers of at least one of Li2S—

P2S5 glass-ceramics, thio-LISICON, and lithium garnet oxides.

14. A battery according to claim 8, wherein the battery has a lithium-containing anode or a silicon-containing anode.

16. A device comprising a battery according to claim 8.

18. A method according to claim 9, wherein the single-lithium ion conductor comprises a polymeric lithium salt.

19. A method according to claim 18, wherein the coating comprises a binder and the single-lithium ion conductor comprises an inorganic sulfide, oxide, or phosphate lithium-ion conductor.

20. A method according to claim 18, wherein the battery has a lithium-containing anode or a silicon-containing anode.

17. A method of improving cycling stability of battery having a sulfur-containing cathode, an anode, and a separator between the cathode and the anode, comprising applying a coating comprising a single-lithium ion conductor to at least one of the cathode and the separator.
