Abstract

Embodiments are directed to infusion devices, systems, and methods to detect a capacity of a collapsible fluid reservoir of an infusion cartridge and/or a volume of a fluid disposed in the collapsible fluid reservoir or some other parameters of the infusion cartridge, and setting corresponding therapeutic parameters of an infusion device. Embodiments may include, obtaining data on the volume of fluid in the collapsible fluid reservoir, analyzing the obtained data to determine the setting of therapeutic parameters, and setting one or more therapeutic parameters of an infusion device.

Claims

1. A method for detecting a capacity of a collapsible fluid reservoir in an infusion cartridge and setting therapeutic parameters of a portable infusion pump, comprising:

obtaining data on a capacity of the collapsible fluid reservoir;

analyzing obtained data on the capacity of the collapsible fluid reservoir to determine the setting of therapeutic parameters of the infusion pump; and

setting one or more therapeutic parameters of the infusion pump based on the obtained data.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein setting a therapeutic parameter includes setting a basal rate range.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein setting a therapeutic parameter includes setting a bolus volume range.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein setting a therapeutic parameter includes setting a maximum bolus volume range.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein setting a therapeutic parameter includes setting an insulin sensitivity.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein obtaining data on the capacity of the collapsible fluid reservoir includes illuminating optical indicia on the infusion cartridge.

7. The method of claim 6, further including reading an optical code on the infusion cartridge that indicates the capacity of the collapsible tluid reservoir with an optical sensor.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the optical code on the infusion cartridge is obtained from omnidirectionally reflecting stripes.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the optical code on the infusion cartridge is obtained from unidirectionally reflecting stripes.

10. The method of claim 6, further including reading a bar code on the infusion cartridge.

11. The method of claim 6, further including reading a quick response code on the infusion cartridge.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein obtaining data on the capacity of the collapsible fluid reservoir includes sensing positions of a plurality of switches coupled to mechanical sensors of the infusion pump that are registered with surface grooves on the infusion cartridge indicating the capacity of the collapsible fluid reservoir.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein obtaining data on the capacity of the collapsible fluid reservoir includes a reading of a radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag affixed on the infusion cartridge, the RFID tag adapted to store data regarding the capacity of the collapsible fluid reservoir.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein a reading of the RFID tag is performed by an RFID reader, which is external to the infusion pump.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the reading of the RFID reader is wirelessly communicated to the infusion pump.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the reading of the RFID tag is performed by an RFID reader, which is secured to the infusion pump.

17. A method for detecting a volume of a fluid disposed in a collapsible fluid reservoir of an infusion cartridge and setting therapeutic parameters, comprising:

obtaining data on the volume of the fluid disposed in a collapsible fluid reservoir;

analyzing the obtained data on the volume of the fluid to determine the setting of therapeutic parameters; and

setting one or more therapeutic parameters of an infusion pump based on the analysis.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein setting a therapeutic parameter includes setting a basal rate range.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein setting a therapeutic parameter includes setting a bolus volume range.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein setting a therapeutic parameter includes setting a maximum bolus volume range.

21. The method of claim 17, wherein setting a therapeutic parameter includes setting an insulin sensitivity.

22. The method of claim 17, wherein obtaining data on the volume of the fluid disposed in the collapsible fluid reservoir includes taking a plurality of pressure sensor readings indicative of the volume of the fluid disposed in the collapsible fluid reservoir.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the pressure sensor readings include:

loading an empty infusion cartridge into the infusion pump;

executing a first pressure metering cycle;

recording a first pressure sensor reading following the pressure metering cycle;

loading an infusion cartridge with a known volume of fluid into the infusion pump;

executing a second pressure metering cycle;

recording a second pressure sensor reading following the second pressure metering cycle;

loading a target infusion cartridge into the infusion pump;

executing a third pressure metering cycle;

recording a third pressure sensor reading following the third pressure metering cycle; and

calculating the volume of fluid disposed in the target infusion cartridge based on the first, the second and third pressure sensor readings.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the first, second and third pressure metering cycles are executed in a same manner.

25. The method of claim 22, wherein the taking of pressure sensor readings include:

taking a first pressure reading in an interior volume of the infusion cartridge;

recording the first pressure reading;

removing a known amount of fluid from a collapsible fluid reservoir;

taking a second pressure reading in the interior volume;

recording the second pressure readings; and

calculating the volume of the fluid disposed in the collapsible fluid reservoir based on the first and second sensor readings.

26. A method for detecting presence of an infusion cartridge in a portable infusion pump, comprising:

illuminating a plurality of reflecting stripes on the infusion cartridge;

detecting reflected light from the reflecting stripes;

determining whether data represented by the reflected light has a predetermined value; and

generating a warning signal when data represented by the reflected light differs from the predetermined value.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the warning signal includes an audible signal.

28. The method of claim 26, wherein illuminating the stripes and detecting the reflected light are performed continuously.
