Abstract

A substance delivery device includes an elongated tubular body having opposing proximal and distal ends, and a diaphragm that is in slideable sealing engagement with an inside wall of the tubular body. The diaphragm is movable in opposite first and second directions within the tubular body. A substance is contained within the tubular body between the diaphragm and the tubular body distal end, and a slave fluid is contained within the tubular body between the diaphragm and the tubular body proximal end. When pressure is exerted on the slave fluid, the slave fluid causes the diaphragm to move and eject the substance through the tubular body distal end.

Claims

1. A substance delivery device, comprising:

an elongated tubular body comprising opposing proximal and distal ends;

a diaphragm, that is in slideable sealing engagement with an inside wall of the tubular body and that is movable in opposite first and second directions within the tubular body;

a substance contained within the tubular body between the diaphragm and the tubular body distal end; and

a slave fluid contained within the tubular body between the diaphragm and the tubular body proximal end, wherein pressure exerted on the slave fluid causes the diaphragm to move and eject the substance out of the tubular body distal end.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the tubular body and diaphragm are MRI-compatible material.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the tubular body proximal and distal ends comprise respective connecters adapted to removably receive tubing in fluid communication with the tubular body.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein a volume of the substance contained within the tubular body is less than a volume of the slave fluid contained within the tubular body.

5. A system for delivering a substance to a patient, the system comprising:

a substance delivery device, comprising;

an elongated tubular body comprising opposing proximal and distal ends;

a diaphragm that is in slideable sealing engagement with an inside wall of the tubular body, wherein the diaphragm is movable in opposite first and second directions within the tubular body; and

a substance contained within the tubular body between the diaphragm and the tubular body distal end; and

a syringe in fluid communication with the tubular body proximal end, wherein the syringe contains a slave fluid, and wherein activation of the syringe to cause the slave fluid to move the diaphragm in the first direction causes the substance to be ejected out of the tubular body distal end.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein activation of the syringe to cause the slave fluid to move the diaphragm in the second direction causes the substance to be drawn from a source into the tubular body through the distal end thereof.

7. The system of claim 5, further comprising a cannula in fluid communication with the tubular body distal end, wherein the cannula is adapted to transfer the substance to a selected region in the patient.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein the cannula is in fluid communication with the tubular body distal end via a length of tubing connected to the tubular body distal end.

9. The system of claim 5, wherein the cannula is MRI-compatible.

10. The system of claim 5, wherein the substance delivery device is formed of MRI-compatible material.

11. The system of claim 5, further comprising a pump adapted to move a plunger in the syringe and cause the slave fluid to eject the substance from the tubular body distal end.

12. A method for delivering a substance to a patient, the method comprising:

inserting a cannula into a selected region of the patient, wherein the cannula comprises a lumen that is in fluid communication with a substance delivery device containing the substance via a length of tubing; and

transferring the substance from the substance delivery device through the lumen via a slave fluid.

The method of claim 12, wherein the substance delivery device includes an elongated tubular body having opposing proximal and distal ends and a diaphragm that is in slideable sealing engagement with an inside wall of the tubular body, and wherein transferring the substance comprises forcing the slave fluid towards the distal end which, in turn, moves the diaphragm and ejects the substance out of the substance delivery device.

A method of preparing a substance delivery device for use in delivering a substance to a patient, the substance delivery device including an elongated tubular body having opposing proximal and distal ends, and a diaphragm in slideable sealing engagement with an inside wall of the tubular body, the method comprising:

loading a slave fluid into the substance delivery device via the tubular body proximal end; and

moving the diaphragm towards the tubular body proximal end via the slave fluid thereby loading the substance into the substance delivery device via the tubular body distal end.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising removing trapped air from the slave fluid after loading the slave fluid into the substance delivery device, and removing trapped air from the substance after loading the substance into the substance delivery device.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein greater than fifty percent (50%) by volume of the slave fluid is used to remove trapped air from the substance.

17. A drug delivery device, comprising an MRI-compatible elongated tubular body comprising a liquid medicament in a first volume and a slave fluid in a second volume separated by a diaphragm in slideable sealing engagement with an inside wall of the tubular body.

18. The drug delivery device of claim 17, wherein the first volume is less than the second volume.

19. The drug delivery device of claim 17, wherein the first volume is less than twenty microliters (20 μ

L).

20. The drug delivery device of claim 17, wherein the first volume is between about twenty microliters (20 μ

L) and about thirty milliliters (30 cc).

21. The drug delivery device of claim 17, wherein the liquid medicament is a brain therapy medicament.

22. The drug delivery device of claim 17, wherein the tubular body comprises opposite proximal and distal ends having respective connectors configured to releasably engage tubing.
