Abstract

A cutting device includes an elongated shaft that extends between a proximal end and a distal end. A distal arm extends from the distal end of the elongated shaft. The distal arm includes an inner surface defining a cavity and an outer surface defining a blunt tip. At least one proximal arm extends from the distal end of the elongated shaft at a position proximal to the distal arm. The at least one proximal arm has an inner surface defining a cavity including a cutting portion configured to cut tissue.

Claims

1. A cutting device comprising:

an elongated shaft extending between a proximal end and a distal end;

a distal arm extending from the distal end of the elongated shaft, the distal arm including an inner surface defining a cavity and an outer surface defining a blunt tip; and

at least one proximal arm extending from the distal end of the elongated shaft at a position proximal to the distal arm, the at least one proximal arm having an inner surface defining a cavity including a cutting portion configured to cut tissue.

2. A cutting device as recited in claim 1, wherein the at least one proximal arm includes two arms extending adjacent to each other and at a position proximal to the upper arm.

3. A cutting device as recited in claim 1, wherein the distal arm includes an arcuate shape configured to capture and collect cut tissue and direct the cut tissue into the cavity.

4. A cutting device as recited in claim 1, wherein the at least one proximal arm is angled transverse to a longitudinal axis of the elongated shaft.

5. A cutting device as recited in claim 1, wherein the cutting portion includes electrodes configured to emit a radio frequency configured to cut tissue.

6. A cutting device as recited in claim 1, wherein the cutting portion is configured to emit plasma energy for destruction of tissue.

7. A cutting device as recited in claim 1, wherein the elongated shaft further includes an attachment to a vacuum so as to produce suction to remove tissue from the cavity.

8. A cutting device as recited in claim 5, wherein the device includes an electrically insulated layer adjacent to and exposing the cutting portion such that the energy transmitted from the radio frequency is centralized.

9. A cutting device as recited in claim 1, wherein the cutting portion includes a blade.

10. A cutting device as recited in claim 9, wherein the blade includes a recessed portion configured to ensnare and capture tissue.

12. A cutting device as recited in claim 10, wherein the distal arm includes a hook shape configured to capture and collect cut tissue and direct the cut tissue into the cavity.

13. A cutting device as recited in claims 10, wherein the cutting portion of the two proximal arms is a blade.

14. A cutting device as recited in claim 10, wherein the two proximal arms are angled transverse to a longitudinal axis of the elongated shaft.

15. A cutting device as recited in claim 10, wherein the cutting portion includes electrodes configured to emit a radio frequency configured to cut tissue.

16. A cutting device as recited in claim 10, wherein the cutting portion is configured to emit plasma energy for destruction of tissue.

17. A cutting device as recited in claim 15, wherein the device includes an electrically insulated layer adjacent to and exposing the cutting portion such that the energy transmitted from the radio frequency is centralized.

18. A cutting device as recited in claim 10, wherein the device includes an electrically insulated layer adjacent to and exposing the cutting portion such that the energy transmitted from the radio frequency tip is centralized in the cavity.

11. A device for cutting tissue comprising:

an elongated shaft extending between a proximal end and a distal end;

a distal arm extending from the distal end of the elongated shaft, the distal arm including an inner surface defining a cavity and an outer surface defining a blunt tip;

two proximal arms extending from the distal end of the elongated shaft at a position proximal to the distal arm, each of the proximal arms having an inner surface defining a cavity including a cutting portion configured to cut tissue; and

an attachment to a vacuum disposed at the proximal end of the elongated shaft to produce suction so as to remove tissue from the cavity.

19. A method of cutting tissue comprising:

inserting a cannula to form a hole in the tissue;

inserting a cutting device through the cannula, the cutting device comprising;

an elongated shaft extending between a proximal end and a distal end;

a distal arm extending from the distal end of the elongated shaft, the distal arm including an inner surface defining a cavity and an outer surface defining a blunt tip;

two proximal arms extending from the distal end of the elongated shaft at a position proximal to the distal arm, each of the proximal arms having an inner surface defining a cavity including a cutting portion configured to cut tissue; and

an attachment to a vacuum disposed at the proximal end of the elongated shaft to produce suction to remove tissue from the cavity;

pulling the cutting device in a proximal direction such that the cutting portion cuts the tissue with a single slice;

capturing cut tissue with the distal arm and directing the cut tissue into the cavity of the distal arm; and

removing the cutting device and the cannula.

20. A method of cutting tissue as recited in claim 19, including the step of suctioning the cut tissue from the cavity so as to clear the cavity.
