Abstract

An electrosurgical system comprising: a handpiece including: (a) a first working arm, (b) a second working arm, and (c) a blade electrode; and an activation circuit having a first switch state and a second switch state, wherein a therapy current is conducted between the first working arm and the second working arm when the activation circuit is in the second switch state and the handpiece is in a first position; wherein the therapy current is conducted between the blade electrode, the first working arm, the second working arm, or a combination thereof and an adjacent handpiece component when the activation circuit is in the second switch state and the handpiece is in a second position; and wherein the therapy current is not conducted when the activation circuit is in the first switch state.

Claims

1. An electrosurgical system comprising:

a handpiece including;

a) a first working arm,

b) a second working arm, and

c) a blade electrode; and

an activation circuit having a first switch state and a second switch state,

wherein a therapy current is conducted between the first working arm and the second working arm when the activation circuit is in the second switch state and the handpiece is in a first position;

wherein the therapy current is conducted between the blade electrode, the first working arm, the second working arm, or a combination thereof and an adjacent handpiece component when the activation circuit is in the second switch state and the handpiece is in a second position; and

wherein the therapy current is not conducted when the activation circuit is in the first switch state.

2. The electrosurgical system of claim 1, wherein the electrosurgical system includes a ground pad.

3. The electrosurgical system of claim 1, wherein the therapy current is bipolar energy when the handpiece is in the first position and the therapy current is monopolar energy when the handpiece is in the second position.

4. The electrosurgical system of claim 1, wherein the adjacent handpiece component is a ground pad.

5. The electrosurgical system of claim 1, wherein in the second position the blade electrode is extended beyond the first working arm and the second working arm, and the therapy current is a monopolar energy and the monopolar energy extends between the blade electrode and the adjacent handpiece component, which is a ground pad.

The electrosurgical system of claim 1, wherein in the second position the first working arm and the second working arm are retracted so that the blade electrode is positioned beyond the first working arm and the second working arm, and the therapy current is a bipolar energy that extends between the blade electrode and the adjacent handpiece component, which is the first working arm, the second working arm, or both.

7. The electrosurgical system of claim 5, wherein the first arm and the second arm are shorted to each other, electrically disconnected so that power cannot pass through the first arm and the second arm, or both when the handpiece is in the second position.

8. The electrosurgical system of claim 1, wherein the blade electrode is electrically disconnected from a power source so that power cannot pass through the blade electrode when the handpiece is in the first position.

9. The electrosurgical system of claim 1, wherein the blade electrode includes an insulator sleeve over a portion that is in contact with a voltage source so that power is prevented from passing through the blade electrode when the hand piece is in the first position.

10. The electrosurgical system of claim 1, wherein the therapy current is conducted between the blade electrode and the first working arm, the second working arm, or both when the ground pad is electrically disconnected and the activation circuit is in the second switch state.

11. The electrosurgical system of claim 1, wherein the first working arm and the second working arm are immobilized when the blade electrode is in the second position.

12. The electrosurgical system of claim 1, wherein the electrosurgical system is connected to two power connectors for supplying power to the handpiece.

13. The electrosurgical system of claim 11, wherein the first working arm and second working arm are electrically connected to a first power connector and a second power connector respectively when the blade electrode is in the first position, and the blade electrode and the ground pad are electrically connected to the first power connector and the second power connector respectively when the blade electrode is in the second switch state.

14. The electrosurgical system of claim 1, wherein the activation circuit includes one or more activation buttons that are movable between the first switch state and the second switch state.

15. The electrosurgical system of claim 14, wherein the activation circuit includes a selector which is movable between a plurality of positions for changing modes and/or functionality of the handpiece.

16. The electrosurgical system of claim 3, wherein the adjacent handpiece component is a ground pad.

17. The electrosurgical system of claim 6, wherein the first arm and the second arm are shorted to each other, electrically disconnected so that power cannot pass through the first arm and the second arm, or both when the handpiece is in the second position.

18. The electrosurgical system of claim 5, wherein the blade electrode is electrically disconnected from a power source so that power cannot pass through the blade electrode when the handpiece is in the first position.

19. The electrosurgical system of claim 6, wherein the blade electrode includes an insulator sleeve over a portion that is in contact with a voltage source so that power is prevented from passing through the blade electrode when the hand piece is in the first position.

20. The electrosurgical system of claim 18, wherein the first working arm and the second working arm are immobilized when the blade electrode is in the second position.
