Abstract

A knee bone cut system and method is disclosed. The knee bone cut system supports cutting an anterior portion of a distal end of a femur. The system comprises a sensored insert, a femoral rotation guide, and a remote system to receive and display sensor data. The sensored insert provide data related to load magnitude, position of load, and leg position. The femoral rotation guide has moveable condyles to adjust condyle position in a rapid manner. A pinch mechanism and lock mechanism respectively move the condyles into contact with the sensored insert. Moreover, the femoral rotation guide can be loaded similar to a final installed insert over a range of motion. For example, the patella can be placed on the femoral rotation guide allowing the patella to load the sensored insert. The femoral insert guide includes guide holes that are used in conjunction with a bone cutting jig.

Claims

1. A knee bone cut system comprising:

a sensored insert configured to measure load and position of load;

a femoral rotation guide configured to couple to a distal end of a femur where the femoral rotation guide includes adjustable condyles configured to couple to articular surfaces of the sensored insert to ensure condyle coupling over a range of motion and where the femoral rotation guide is configured to receive loading from a patella over a range of motion; and

a remote system configured to receive data from the sensored insert where the remote system is configured monitor load and position of load on the articular surfaces of the sensored insert over the range of motion.

2. The system of claim 1 where the femoral rotation guide comprises a scissor mechanism configured to change condyle position relative to a distal end of the femur.

3. The system of claim 2 where the femoral rotation guide includes a lock configured to fix a position of the adjustable condyles relative to the distal end of the femur.

4. The system of claim 3 where the femoral rotation guide includes drill guide holes configured to support cutting block installation to the femur.

5. The system of claim 4 where the femoral rotation guide includes a pinch mechanism configured to adjust position of the condyles.

6. The system of claim 5 where the femoral rotation guide comprises a polymer material and where the femoral rotation guide is configured to be disposed of after being used.

7. The system of claim 6 further including a femoral cutting block configured to cut a posterior portion of a distal end of the femur where the femoral cutting block includes fasteners aligned to the drill guide holes of the femoral rotation guide.

8. A knee bone cut system for a posterior bone cut on a distal end of a femur comprising:

coupling a femoral rotation guide to a distal end of a femur;

inserting a sensored insert between the fermoral rotation guide and a tibial prosthetic component;

coupling a patella to the femoral rotation guide where the patella applies a force to the femoral rotation guide;

adjusting the femoral rotation guide such that each condyle couples to a corresponding articular surface of the sensored insert;

sending load and position of load data to a remote system; and

viewing the load and position of load on each articular surface of the sensored insert on the remote system.

9. The method of claim 8 further including the steps of:

squeezing a condyle adjuster extending from the femoral rotation guide to move each condyle of the femoral rotation guide to couple with a corresponding articular surface; and

locking the condyle adjuster.

10. The method of claim 9 where the step of locking comprises a step of rotating a locking mechanism to clamp the condyle adjuster.

11. The method of claim 9 further including the steps of:

rotating a leg through a range of motion;

viewing the load and position of load on each articular surface over the range of motion;

identifying positions of flexion where rollback or lift off occur on the articular surfaces;

unlocking the condyle adjuster;

adjusting the femoral rotation guide to minimize rollback or lift off at the identified positions of flexion where rollback or lift back occurred;

locking the condyle adjuster; and

moving the leg through the range of motion.

12. The method of claim 11 further including the steps of:

moving the leg through the range of motion;

measuring load on each condyle through the range of motion where the loading on each condyle is within a predetermined range throughout the range of motion; and

measuring a position of load on each condyle where the position of load is within a predetermined area range throughout the range of motion.

13. The method of claim 11 further including a step of performing soft tissue tensioning to change loading or position of load on each articular surface.

14. The method of claim 11 further including a step of disposing of the femoral rotation guide and sensored insert after a surgery is completed.

15. A knee bone cut system comprising:

a sensored insert configured to measure load and position of load;

a femoral rotation guide configured to couple to a distal end of a femur where the femoral rotation guide comprises a scissor mechanism to reposition condyles to couple to corresponding articular surfaces, a condyle adjuster coupled to the scissor mechanism, and a lock mechanism coupled to the scissor mechanism where the condyle adjuster is configured to be squeezed or pinched to rapidly reposition condyles;

a remote system to configured to receive data from the sensored insert where the remote system is configured to monitor load and position of load on the articular surfaces of the sensored insert.

16. The knee bone cut system of claim 15 where the condyle adjuster extends away from the femoral rotation guide and is configured to allow a patella to be positioned on the femoral rotation guide to apply forces thereto.

17. The knee bone cut system of claim 15 where the femoral rotation guide comprises a polymer material.

18. The knee bone cut system of claim 15 where the femoral rotation guide includes drill guide holes configured to support cutting block installation to the femur.

19. The knee bone cut system of claim 18 further including a femoral cutting block configured to cut a posterior portion of a distal end of the femur where the femoral cutting block includes fasteners aligned to the drill guide holes of the femoral rotation guide.

20. The bone cut system of claim 15 where the femoral rotation guide and the sensored insert are configured to be disposable after surgery.
