Abstract

A system and method are disclosed for tracking documents in a computing environment, including documents stored locally on computing devices. A monitoring module stored on a computing device may determine that a user is trying to open a document stored locally on the computing device and communicate a signature associated with the document to a document tracking system. A document tracking system may compare the signature with a set of stored signatures to see if the document corresponds to a document already being tracked. If the document is not being tracked already, the document tracking system may upload the document into the system, send a link to a newer version or determine one or more actions to be performed on the document based on the signature.

Claims

1. A method for document driven actions, comprising:

maintaining a set of signatures corresponding to documents tracked by a document tracking system and a set of associated actions, each action in the set of associated actions associated with a signature in the set of signatures;

receiving, at the document tracking system, a document signature associated with a document from a client computing device;

determining, at the document tracking system, that the document signature matches one of the set of signatures;

determining, at the document tracking system, an action associated with the document signature;

sending a message to a monitoring module including information about the action; and

performing the action at the monitoring module.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the monitoring module executes on the client device computing device, further comprising, at the monitoring module, generating the document signature.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising returning to the monitoring module an indication of a match of the signature.

4. The method of claim 2, further comprising redirecting the document to the monitoring module.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising, at the monitoring module:

intercepting a request for the document from an operating system of the client computing device;

generating the signature;

communicating the signature to the document tracking system;

receiving the message from the document tracking system that specifies the action associated with the document; and

passing the document to the operating system.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising, at the monitoring module, temporarily holding the document until receiving the message from the document tracking system that specifies the action.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising, at the monitoring module, initiating a browser session in a web browser to a URL specified by the message from the document tracking system.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the action comprises initiating contact with members of a social community.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the signature comprises a plurality of signatures created by hashing portions of the document.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing an interface to the document tracking system that allows a user to associate actions with the document.

11. A system for document driven actions, comprising:

a client computing device comprising a monitoring module; and

a document tracking system in communication with the client computing device, wherein;

the monitoring module configured to;

monitor the client computing device to detect attempts to open documents at the client computing device; and

in response to detecting an attempt to open a document, send a document signature for the document to the document tracking system;

perform an action specified in a message from the document tracking system; and

the document tracking is configured to;

maintain a set of signatures corresponding to tracked documents and a set of associated actions, each action in the set of associated actions associated with a signature in the set of signatures;

receive the document signature from the monitoring module;

in response to determining that the document signature matches a signature in the set of signatures, determine if there is an action associated with the document signature; and

in response to determining that there is the action associated with the document signature, send the message to the monitoring module specifying the action.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the monitoring module is operable to generate the signature.

13. The system of claim 11, wherein the document tracking system is configured to return an indication of a match of the document signature to the monitoring module.

14. The system of claim 11, wherein the monitoring module is further configured to:

intercept a request for the document from an operating system of the computing device;

receive the document;

generate the document signature; and

pass the document to the operating system.

15. The system of claim 11, wherein the monitoring module is further configured to:

temporarily hold the document until receiving the message from the document tracking system that specifies the action.

16. The system of claim 11, wherein the monitoring module is further configured to initiate a browser session in a web browser to a URL specified in the message.

17. The system of claim 11, wherein the action comprises initiating contact with members of a social community.

18. The system of claim 17, further comprising statistics associated with at least one of the document signature or the action associated with the document signature, the statistics used to further control the social community.

19. The system of claim 11, wherein the signature comprises a plurality of signatures created by hashing portions of the document.

20. The system of claim 11, wherein the document tracking system is further configured to provide an interface that allows a user to specify actions associated with documents.
