Abstract

Disclosed is a method for requesting data from a set of remote units in a network, the method comprising: defining an Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol, the Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol comprising a schedule of a plurality of time slots, each time slot defined by a distinct start time and end time pair; broadcasting transmitting instructions to the set of remote units, the transmitting instructions comprising the Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol and selection instructions for selecting a time slot from the Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol to use for data transmission; and, receiving data transmitted from a remote unit in the set of remote units in accordance with the transmitting instructions.

Claims

1. A method for requesting data from a set of remote units in a network, the method comprising:

defining an Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol, the Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol comprising a schedule of a plurality of time slots, each time slot defined by a distinct start time and end time pair;

broadcasting transmitting instructions to the set of remote units, the transmitting instructions comprising the Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol and selection instructions for selecting a time slot from the Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol to use for data transmission; and

,

receiving data transmitted from a remote unit in the set of remote units in accordance with the transmitting instructions.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising transmitting an acknowledgement message to the remote unit.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the start time and end time pairs define a set of non-overlapping time slots within which data may be transmitted.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein the number of times slots and the duration of the time slots are dynamic and dependent on the performance of the communication network.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

monitoring one or more conditions of the network, and wherein the Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol is defined based on the monitored one or more conditions.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the one or more conditions comprise one of:

an increased rate of data retransmission;

an increase in the number of poll requests from remote units; and

an increase in the number of timeslots within which data is not included.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein receiving data transmitted from one or more of the set of remote units comprises extracting data from one or more of the time slots.

8. The method of claim 7 further comprising:

associating the data with a remote unit based on a portion of the extracted data.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the instructions for selecting a time slot comprise one of:

instructions to select a time slot based on selected digits of the serial number of the remote unit, instructions to select a time slot based on a pseudo-random number, and instructions to select a time slot based on the geo-location of the remote unit.

10. The method of claim 1 further comprising, polling one or more remote units directly to request polling data.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the polling data comprises a confirmation of the existence that a functioning transmission path to the remote unit.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the data is received on a single radio frequency channel.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the transmitting instructions are broadcast on the single radio frequency channel.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the data transmitted from the remote unit comprises a request to transmit a long message, wherein the long message comprises a message that takes longer to transmit than a duration of the time slot.

15. The method of claim 14 further comprising:

in response to receiving the data transmitted from the remote unit, transmitting a polling request directly to the remote unit to request the long message;

receiving the long message; and

transmitting an acknowledgement to the remote unit that the long message was received.

16. A method of transmitting data from a remote unit to a base, the method comprising:

receiving transmitting instructions from the base, the transmitting instructions comprising an Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol and instructions for selecting a time slot from the Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol, the Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol comprising a schedule of a set of time slots each defined by a start time and end time pair;

selecting a time slot from the Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol within which to transmit remote unit data, the selection based on the instructions for selecting the time slot; and

transmitting the data to the base in accordance with the selected time slot.

17. The method of claim 16 further comprising receiving an acknowledgment message from the base.

18. The method of claim 16, further comprising transmitting the data to a hop unit selected from an ordered list of hop units stored at the remote unit, the ordered list of hop units comprising a list of units within transmission range of the remote unit.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising monitoring the data transmitted from of the selected hop unit.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising:

determining that data was not transmitted from the hop unit; and

,

transmitting the data to a second hop unit from the ordered list.

21. The method of claim 20 wherein transmitting the data to the second hop unit comprises reselecting a time slot based on the instructions for selecting a time slot.

22. The method of claim 16, wherein the data is transmitted using a single radio frequency channel.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the transmitting instructions are received on the single radio frequency channel.

24. The method of claim 16 wherein the data comprises the identification of the remote unit and the data comprises emergency event data.

25. The method of claim 16 wherein the remote unit is an event reporting unit.

26. The method of claim 16, wherein the data transmitted to the base comprises a request to transmit a long message, and wherein the long message comprises a message that takes longer to transmit than a duration of a time slot.

27. The method of claim 26, further comprising, in response to transmitting the data to the base:

receiving a polling request to transmit the long message; and

transmitting the long message.

28. A communication network for reducing signal collision when transmitting data from one or more remote units out of a set of remote units, the network comprising:

a set of one or more remote units, each remote unit arranged to transmit data;

a base for communicating with the set of one or more remote units and for managing the communication network, the base associated with a database and with a processor, the processor configured to;

define an Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol, the Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol comprising a schedule of plurality of time slots, each time slot defined by a distinct start time and end time pair;

broadcast transmitting instructions the set of remote units, the transmitting instructions comprising the Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol and selection instructions for selecting a time slot from the Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol to use for data transmission; and

,

receive data transmitted from one of the remote units in the set of one or more remote units in accordance with the transmitting instructions.

29. The network of claim 28, wherein the processor is further configured to transmit an acknowledgment message to the one of the remote units.

30. The network of claim 28, wherein the start time and end time pairs define a set of non-overlapping time slots within which data may be transmitted.

31. The network of claim 28, wherein the number of times slots and the duration of the time slots are dynamic and dependent on the performance of the communication network.

32. The network of claim 28 further comprising:

monitoring one or more conditions of the network, and wherein the Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol is defined based on the monitored one or more conditions.

33. The network of claim 32, wherein the one or more conditions comprises one or more of:

an increased rate of data retransmission;

an increase in the number of poll requests from remote units; and

an increase in the number of timeslots within which data is not included.

34. The network of claim 28 wherein receiving data transmitted from one or more of the set of remote units comprises extracting data from one or more of the time slots.

35. The network of claim 34 further comprising:

associating the data with a remote unit based on a portion of the extracted data.

36. The network of claim 28, wherein the instructions for selecting a time slot comprise one of:

instructions to select a time slot based on selected digits of the serial number of the remote unit, instructions to select a time slot based on a pseudo-random number, and instructions to select a time slot based on the geo-location of the remote unit.

37. The network of claim 28 further comprising, polling one or more remote units directly to request polling data.

38. The network of claim 37 wherein the polling data comprises a confirmation of the existence of a transmission path to the remote unit.

39. The network of claim 28 wherein the data is received on a single radio frequency channel.

40. The network of claim 28, wherein the data received from the remote unit comprises a request to transmit a long message, wherein the long message comprises a message that takes a duration longer than the time slot to transmit.

41. The network of claim 40, wherein the processor associated with the base is further configured to, in response to receiving the data:

transmit a polling request to the remote unit to request the long message;

receive the long message; and

,

transmit an acknowledgement message.

42. A remote unit for transmitting data across a network to a base, the remote unit comprising:

a memory for storing instructions;

a processor for executing instructions stored on the memory in order to;

receive transmitting instructions from the base, the transmitting instructions comprising an Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol and instructions for selecting a time slot from the Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol, the Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol comprising schedule of a set of time slots each defined by a start time and end time pair;

select a time slot from the Asynchronous Ubiquitous Protocol within which to transmit remote unit data, the selection based on the instructions for selecting the time slot; and

transmit the data to the base in accordance with the selected time slot.

43. The remote unit of claim 42 further comprising receiving an acknowledgement message from the base.

44. The remote unit of claim 42, wherein the memory is configured to store an ordered list of hop units, and wherein the transmission of the data comprises transmitting the data to a hop unit selected from the ordered list of hop units stored at the remote unit.

45. The remote unit of claim 44, wherein the processor is further configured to monitor the data transmitted from the selected hop unit.

46. The remote unit of claim 45, wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine that the data was not transmitted from the hop unit;

select a second hop unit from the ordered list; and

,

transmit the data to the second hop unit.

47. The remote unit of claim 46, wherein transmitting the data to the second hop unit comprises reselecting a time slot based on the instructions for selecting a time slot.

48. The remote unit of claim 42, wherein the processor is configured to transmit the data on a single radio frequency.

49. The remote unit of claim 48, wherein the processor is configured to broadcast the transmitting instructions on the single radio frequency channel.

50. The remote unit of claim 42, wherein the data comprises the identification of the remote unit and the data comprises emergency event data.

51. The remote unit of claim 42, wherein the remote unit is an event reporting unit.

52. The remote unit of claim 42, wherein the data transmitted to the base comprises a request to transmit a long message, and wherein the long message comprises a message that takes a duration longer than the time slot to transmit.

53. The remote unit of claim 52, wherein the processor is further configured to, after transmitting the data:

receive a polling message requesting the long message;

transmitting the long message; and

,

receive an acknowledgement message.
