Abstract

A graphical user interface is provided that can be used on a diagnostic tool. The graphical user interface allows a technician to operate various functions of the diagnostic tool including searching for additional information on the Internet, receiving weather information that is relevant to certain diagnostic tests, and displaying in certain formats the retrieved vehicle data and when certain vehicles were last scanned or diagnosed.

Claims

1. A diagnostic tool, comprising:

a processor that performs a function of the diagnostic tool;

a display in communication with the processor;

a wireless communication interface in communication with the processor and configured to communicate with a remote device;

a vehicle communication protocol interface operatively coupled to the processor and configured to allow the processor to communicate with a vehicle under test;

a memory in communication with the processor, the memory containing instructions, that when executed by the processor causes the processor to;

generate, on the display, a first graphical user interface (GUI) comprising;

a first plurality of icons corresponding to a plurality of diagnostic functions performable by the diagnostic tool; and

generate, on the display, a second GUI, wherein only a portion of the second GUI is displayed on the display.

2. The diagnostic tool of claim 1, wherein the second GUI is positioned to a first side of the first GUI.

3. The diagnostic tool of claim 1, wherein when one of the first plurality of icons is pressed, the diagnostic tool performs an oil light reset on the vehicle under test.

4. The diagnostic tool of claim 1, wherein when one of the first plurality of icons is pressed, vehicle reference information is provided.

5. The diagnostic tool of claim 2, wherein the processor further generates a third GUI that is positioned on a second side of the first GUI.

6. The diagnostic tool of claim 1, wherein the second GUI includes enough information about a second plurality of icons, each of the second plurality of icons performs different function on the diagnostic tool than the first plurality of icons.

7. The diagnostic tool of claim 1, wherein the second GUI shows enough information about a second plurality of icons, each of the second plurality of icons performs similar functions on the diagnostic tool as the first plurality of icons.

8. The diagnostic tool of claim 2, wherein the display includes a portion displaying information about the vehicle under test.

9. A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium comprising machine-readable instructions for causing a processor of a diagnostic tool to execute the method of:

generating, on the display, a first graphical user interface (GUI) comprising;

a first plurality of icons corresponding to the plurality of diagnostic functions performable by the diagnostic tool; and

generating, on the display, a second GUI, wherein only a portion of the second GUI is displayed on the display.

10. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 9 further comprising:

positioning the second GUI on a first side of the first GUI.

11. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 9 further comprising:

performing an oil light reset of the vehicle under test by the diagnostic tool when one of the first plurality of icons is pressed.

12. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 9 further comprising:

displaying vehicle reference information when one of the first plurality of icons is pressed.

13. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 10 further comprising:

generating a third GUI that is positioned on a second side of the first GUI.

14. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 9, wherein the second GUI includes enough information about a second plurality of icons, each of the second plurality of icons performs different function on the diagnostic tool than the first plurality of icons.

15. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 9, wherein the second GUI includes enough information about a second plurality of icons, each of the second plurality of icons performs similar functions on the diagnostic tool as the first plurality of icons.

16. A computer-implemented method for displaying multiple graphical user interfaces on a display of a diagnostic tool, the method comprising:

generating, on the display, a first graphical user interface (GUI) comprising;

a first plurality of icons corresponding to a plurality of diagnostic functions performable by the diagnostic tool; and

generating, on the display, a second GUI, wherein only a portion of the second GUI is displayed on the display.

17. The computer-implemented method of claim 16 further comprising:

positioning the second GUI on a first side of the first GUI.

18. The computer-implemented method of claim 17 further comprising:

generating a third GUI that is positioned on a second side of the first GUI.

19. The computer-implemented method of claim 16, wherein the second GUI includes enough information about a second plurality of icons, each of the second plurality of icons performs different function on the diagnostic tool than the first plurality of icons.

20. The computer-implemented method of claim 16, wherein the second GUI includes enough information about a second plurality of icons, each of the second plurality of icons performs similar functions on the diagnostic tool as the first plurality of icons.
