Abstract

A method of managing traffic in a communications channel includes the steps of receiving a subscriber ID corresponding to a subscriber, performing a spectral analysis on a signal received from the subscriber within a time interval identified by the subscriber ID, and adjusting transmission characteristics of the subscriber based on the spectral analysis.

Claims

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a memory that stores a parameter; and

a processor configured to receive a single data sequence from among a plurality of data sequences and to perform, in response to a command, a spectral analysis of the single sequence in accordance with the parameter.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the spectral analysis comprises:

a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT).

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to time stamp spectral measurements.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the spectral analysis comprises at least one of:

a spectral shape of transmitted signals;

a presence of interfering signals, including a level and shape of a background noise floor;

or

a presence of partial spectral nulls in upstream transmission signals indicating reflections in an upstream path.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to perform the spectral analysis when an input pin of the processor is triggered.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to perform the spectral analysis when a Bandwidth Allocation Map (MAP) burst parameter matches a pre-programmed number.

7. A processor, comprising:

an input interface configured to receive a data sequence and a parameter, the parameter determining a property of a spectral analysis;

a calculation module configured to perform the spectral analysis on the data, sequence in accordance with the property to provide spectral measurements; and

an output interface configured to provide the spectral measurements.

8. The processor of claim 7, wherein the calculation module is further configured to determine a windowing technique or an averaging technique based upon the parameter.

9. The processor of claim 7, wherein the calculation module is further configured to perform the spectral analysis when an input pin of the processor is triggered.

10. The processor of claim 7, wherein the calculation module is further configured to perform the spectral analysis when a Bandwidth Allocation Map (MAP) burst parameter matches a pre-programmed number.

11. The processor of claim 7, wherein the calculation module is further configured to time stamp the spectral measurements.

12. The processor of claim 7, wherein the spectral analysis indicates at least one of:

a spectral shape of transmitted signals;

a presence of interfering signals, including a level and shape of a background noise floor;

or

a presence of partial spectral nulls in upstream transmission signals indicating reflections in an upstream path.

13. The processor of claim 7, wherein the calculation module is further configured to perform the spectral analysis on a selected frequency range of the data sequence to provide the spectral measurements arranged in a plurality of bins, each bin corresponding to a respective frequency range.

14. A method, comprising:

receiving, by processor, a parameter and a command;

receiving, by processor;

a data sequence selected from among a plurality of data sequences; and

performing, by processor, a spectral analysis on the data sequence, based on the parameter and in response to the command, to provide spectral measurements.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the performing comprises:

preforming a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) on the data sequence.

16. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

marking the spectral measurements with a time stamp.

17. The method of claim 14, wherein the spectral analysis comprises at least one of:

a spectral shape of transmitted signals;

a presence of interfering signals, including a level and shape of a background noise floor;

or

a presence of partial spectral nulls in upstream transmission signals indicating reflections in an upstream path.

18. The method of claim 14, wherein the performing comprises:

triggering the spectral analysis by using an input pin of the processor.

19. The method of claim 14, wherein the performing comprises:

triggering the spectral analysis when a Bandwidth Allocation Map (MAP) burst parameter matches a pre-programmed number.

20. The method of claim 14, wherein the performing comprises:

performing the spectral analysis on a selected frequency range of the data sequence to provide the spectral measurements arranged in a plurality of bins, each bin corresponding to a respective frequency range.
