Abstract

Reactive compositions are provided, having biocidal and chemical decontamination/neutralization properties, comprising a hygroscopic polymer and an active, which are useful in a variety of commercial, healthcare and military applications and a wide variety of contaminants, including without limitation chemical and biological warfare agents. The reactive compositions are renewable or rechargeable after use by exposure to an additional application of the active and do not require removal, disposal or replacement of the originally applied composition. Methods for preparing and applying the reactive compositions are disclosed.

Claims

1. A method for providing a reactive coating having biocidal and chemical decontamination properties to a surface of an article, comprising the steps of:

a. applying a hygroscopic polymer to the surface of the article;

b. processing the polymer to form a film; and

c. exposing the film to a charge of liquid or vaporized oxidant comprising hydrogen peroxide, chlorine, peracetic acid, iodine, or mixtures thereof, for a time sufficient to allow the oxidant to react with or absorb onto the film.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the liquid or vaporized oxidant is hydrogen peroxide and wherein the film is exposed to at least about 400 ppm of vaporized hydrogen peroxide for a time of about 30 minutes.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the polymer comprises polyvinylpyrrolidone, low density polyethylene, or mixtures thereof.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the film is crosslinked using UV light at energy densities of 6,000-12,000 mJ/cm².

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the polyvinylpyrrolidone has a molecular weight of 10K, 58K, 360K, 1300K, or mixtures thereof.

6. A method of providing a reactive coating having biocidal and chemical deactivation properties to the surface of an article, comprising the steps of:

a. providing a polymer present in an amount ranging from 1-99 wt. %, based upon the total weight of the reactive composition;

b. mixing the polymer with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide present in an amount ranging from 1-10 wt. %, based upon the total weight of the reactive composition;

c. applying the polymer/hydrogen peroxide mixture to the surface of the article; and

d. drying the mixture.

7. The method as set forth in claim 6, wherein the polymer comprises polyvinylpyrrolidone, low density polyethylene, or mixtures thereof.

8. A rechargeable reactive composition having biocidal and chemical decontamination properties, comprising:

a. a polymer that is polyvinylpyrrolidone, low density polyethylene or mixtures thereof, present in an amount from about 1 to about 99 wt. %, based on the total weight of the reactive surface composition; and

b. an active material comprising magnesium peroxide, calcium peroxide, hydrogen peroxide, chlorine, peracetic acid, iodine or mixtures thereof, present in an amount from about 1 to about 10 wt. %, based on the total weight of the reactive surface composition,

wherein the properties of the surface may be renewed or recharged upon fouling, exhaustion or decay of the active by exposing the polymer to an additional dose of the active.

9. A reactive composition having biocidal and chemical decontamination properties, comprising:

a. a hygroscopic polymer comprising polyvinylpyrrolidone, low density polyethylene or mixtures thereof; and

;

b. an active material incorporated into the polymer comprising a liquid or vaporized peroxide, chlorine, peracetic acid, iodine, or mixtures thereof.

10. The reactive composition of claim 9, wherein the polymer is present in an amount ranging from about 90 to about 99 wt. % and wherein the active is present in an amount ranging from about 1 to about 10 wt. %, based upon the total weight of the reactive composition.

11. The reactive composition of claim 9, wherein the active is incorporated into a film formed by the polymer by exposing the polymer film to a liquid or vaporized form of the active for a time sufficient to allow the active to distribute into the polymer.

12. A surface coating comprising the reactive composition of claim 9.

13. An article comprising the reactive composition of claim 9.

14. A method for providing biocidal and chemical decontamination properties to an article, comprising the step of incorporating a reactive composition during the manufacture of the article, wherein the reactive composition comprises a hygroscopic polymer and an active.

15. A reactive composition having biocidal and chemical decontamination properties, consisting essentially of:

a. a hygroscopic polymer that is polyvinyl pyrrolidone having a molecular weight of 10K, 58K, 360K or 1300K, present in an amount of from about 1 to about 99 wt. %, based upon the total weight of the reactive composition; and

b. an active that is hydrogen peroxide present in an amount of from about 1 to about 10 wt. %, based upon the total weight of the reactive composition.
