Abstract

The invention relates to an implantable radiopaque stent adapted to be disposed in a body lumen. In one aspect of the invention, a plurality of elongate filaments including one or more radiopaque filaments are arranged to form a hollow tubular structure having a tubular wall that defines an inner surface and an outer surface and opposing first open end and second open end. One of the open ends of the stent is formed by an intersection of adjacent filament ends. A radiopaque compound is applied to the intersection, the radiopaque compound comprising radiopaque material and polymeric material. The radiopaque compound and radiopaque filament provide improved external imaging of the tubular structure on imaging equipment.

Claims

1. A radiopaque stent comprising:

a plurality of elongate filaments, the plurality of filaments are braided or woven to form a hollow tubular structure having a tubular wall that defines an inner surface and an outer surface and opposing first open end and second open end;

the braided or woven hollow tubular structure comprises a plurality of recesses formed by an intersection the braided or woven plurality of filaments;

at least one of the first open end and the second open end are formed by an intersection of adjacent ends of the plurality of filaments;

a plurality of recesses formed by a plurality of intersections of the plurality of filaments; and

a radiopaque composition comprising radiopaque material and polymeric material is disposed in one or more of the plurality of recesses wherein the radiopaque compound improves external imaging of the tubular structure on imaging equipment.

2. The radiopaque stent of claim 1 wherein the first open end and second open end are atraumatic and free of any sharp filament ends.

3. The radiopaque stent of claim 1 wherein all of elongate filaments terminate at the first open end.

4. The radiopaque stent of claim 1 wherein the adjacent ends of the plurality of filaments are welded together with a welding material.

5. The radiopaque stent of claim 1 wherein the adjacent ends of the plurality of filaments are fused together by heat.

6. The radiopaque stent of claim 4 wherein the adjacent ends of the plurality of filaments are welded with a radiopaque welding material.

7. The radiopaque stent of claim 1 wherein the filaments are joined with a mechanical device selected from the group consisting of a clamps, crimpable tubes and hypotube.

8. The radiopaque stent of claim 1 wherein the plurality of filaments are arranged symmetrically.

9. The radiopaque stent of claim 8 wherein the number of filaments in each direction of a braid is divisible by two.

10. The radiopaque stent of claim 1 wherein the stent comprises a proximal end, a distal end and a central portion and wherein the radiopaque composition is provided in the plurality of recesses at the distal end, the proximal end, in a central portion of the stent of a combination thereof.

11. The radiopaque stent of claim 10 wherein the stent comprises a circumference, the radiopaque composition is provided uniformly in the plurality of recesses about the circumference.

12. The radiopaque stent of claim 1 comprising a proximal end and a distal end, at least one of which comprises an outward flare.

13. The radiopaque stent of claim 1 further comprising a polymeric covering.

14. The radiopaque stent of claim 1 wherein the radiopaque composition comprises at least about 25% radiopaque material.

The radiopaque stent of claim 1 wherein the radiopaque composition comprises at least one polymeric material selected from the group consisting of polyester, polypropylene, polyethylene, polyurethane, polynaphthalene, polytetrafluoroethylene, expanded polytetrafluoroethylene, silicone, and combinations thereof.

16. The radiopaque stent of claim 1 wherein the plurality of filaments are arranged helically about a centerline of the tubular structure with a common axis.

17. The radiopaque stent of claim 1 wherein tubular structure is formed about a longitudinal axis, the plurality of filaments traverse the length of the stent in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis.

18. The radiopaque stent of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of filaments passes alternatively over and under one of more of the other filaments in an intersection repeat pattern.

19. The radiopaque stent of claim 1 wherein braid is a diamond braid having a 1/1 intersection repeat pattern, a regular braid having a 2/2 intersection repeat pattern or a Hercules braid having a 3/3 intersection repeat pattern.

The radiopaque stent of claim 1 wherein said stent is a coronary stent, a peripheral vasculature stent, an esophageal stent, a tracheal stent, a bronchial stent, a colonic stent, a stent for a small intestine, a biliary tract stent, a urinary tract stent, a prostate stent, a brain stent and a stomach stent.
