Abstract

A data processing system is provided. A host processing device supports a host transport engine operable to establish a first transport stream over a network with a remote peer. Device hardware comprises a device transport engine. The device transport engine is configured to monitor the first transport stream to determine a state of the first transport stream and in response to an indication from the host processing device perform transport processing of the first transport stream.

Claims

1. A data processing system comprising:

a host processing device supporting a host transport engine operable to establish a first transport stream over a network with a remote peer; and

device hardware comprising a device transport engine;

wherein the device transport engine is configured to monitor the first transport stream to determine a state of the first transport stream and in response to an indication from the host processing device perform transport processing of the first transport stream.

2. The data processing system of claim 1, wherein the device transport engine is configured to monitor the transport stream by inspecting a header of a frame transmitted by the host transport engine corresponding to the first transport stream.

3. The data processing system of claim 2 wherein the device transport engine is configured to determine the state of the first transport stream in dependence on the contents of the header.

4. The data processing system of claim 1 wherein the device transport engine is configured to perform processing on behalf of a host application.

5. The data processing system of claim 1 wherein the device transport engine is configured to perform processing on behalf of a device application.

6. The data processing system of claim 1 wherein the host transport engine is configured to perform processing on behalf of a host application.

7. The data processing system of claim 1 wherein the host transport engine is further configured to maintain state for the first transport stream.

8. The data processing system of claim 1 wherein the device hardware further comprises a device application.

9. The data processing system of claim 1 wherein the host transport engine is configured to establish the first transport stream for termination at a device application.

10. The data processing system of claim 1 wherein the host transport engine is configured to establish the first transport stream for termination at a host application.

11. The data processing system of claim 1 wherein the host transport engine is further configured to pass additional state information to the device transport engine so as to permit the device transport engine to perform transport processing of the first transport stream in dependence on the determined state and the state passed from the host transport engine.

12. The data processing system of claim 1 wherein the device transport engine is configured to monitor the transmit path of the data stream to determine the state information.

13. The data processing system of claim 12 wherein the device transport engine is further configured to monitor the receive path of the data stream to determine further state information.

14. The data processing system of claim 1 wherein the indication is a token.

15. A method comprising:

monitoring a first transport stream established over a network with a remote peer by a host transport engine;

determining a state of the first transport stream by a device transport engine; and

performing transport processing of the first transport stream in response to an indication from the host processing device.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein monitoring the first transport stream further comprises monitoring the transport stream by inspecting a header of a frame transmitted by the host transport engine corresponding to the first transport stream.

17. The method of claim 16 further comprising determining the state of the first transport stream in dependence on the contents of the header.

18. The method of claim 15 further comprising performing processing on behalf of a host application.

19. The method of claim 15 further comprising performing processing on behalf of an device application.

20. The method of claim 15 further comprising monitoring the transmit path of the data stream to determine the state information.

21. The method of claim 20 further comprising monitoring the receive path of the data stream to determine further state information.

22. The method of claim 15 further comprising establishing a first transport stream over a network with a remote peer by the host transport engine.

23. The method of claim 22 further comprising performing processing by the host transport engine on behalf of a host application.

24. The method of claim 22 further comprising the host transport engine maintaining state for the first transport stream.

25. The method of claim 22 further comprising the host transport engine establishing the first transport stream for termination at a device application.

26. The method of claim 22 further comprising the host transport engine establishing the first transport stream for termination at a host application.

27. The method of claim 22 further comprising the host transport engine passing additional state information to the device transport engine so as to permit the device transport engine to perform transport processing of the first transport stream in dependence on the determined state and the state passed from the host transport engine.
