Abstract

An apparatus and method for editing a message in a mobile terminal are provided. The method includes displaying a text display area and a keypad display area, displaying at least one letter and a cursor in the text display area, and moving the cursor according to a first gesture performed in the keypad display area.

Claims

1. An apparatus of editing a message in a mobile terminal, the apparatus comprising:

a display unit configured to display a text display area and a keypad display area, and to display at least one letter and a cursor in the text display area; and

a controller configured to move the cursor according to a first gesture performed in the keypad display area.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the controller controls to display an icon representing that the cursor is moving by the first gesture, in the keypad display area, along a path of the first gesture.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first gesture comprises a touch-and-drag operation.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the controller detects first coordinates of the first gesture, detects second coordinates of the text display area corresponding to the detected first coordinates of the first gesture, and moves the cursor to the second coordinates.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the controller highlights a selection area including at least one letter in the text display area according to a second gesture performed in the keypad display area, and displays first area indicators indicating start and end points of the selection area.

6. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the second gesture comprises a touch-and-hold operation.

7. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the controller displays second area indicators corresponding to the first area indicators according to a location of the second gesture.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the controller adjusts a size of the selection area according to a third gesture performed in the keypad display area.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the third gesture comprises one of a touch-and-drag operation and a drag operation following the second gesture.

10. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the controller detects third coordinates of the third gesture, moves one of the second area indicators according to the detected third coordinates of the third gesture, detects fourth coordinates of the text display area corresponding to coordinates of the moved second area indicator, moves a first area indicator corresponding to the moved second area indicator among the first area indicators to the detected fourth coordinates, and changes the size of the selection area according to the movement of the first area indicator.

11. A method of editing a message in a mobile terminal, the method comprising:

displaying a text display area and a keypad display area, and displaying at least one letter and a cursor in the text display area; and

moving the cursor according to a first gesture performed in the keypad display area.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising displaying an icon representing that the cursor is moving by the first gesture, in the keypad display area, along a path of the first gesture.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the first gesture comprises a touch-and-drag operation.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the moving of the cursor comprises detecting first coordinates of the first gesture, detecting second coordinates of the text display area corresponding to the detected first coordinates of the first gesture, and moving the cursor to the second coordinates.

15. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

highlighting a selection area including at least one letter in the text display area according to a second gesture performed in the keypad display area; and

displaying first area indicators indicating start and end points of the selection area.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the second gesture comprises a touch-and-hold operation.

17. The method of claim 15, further comprising displaying second area indicators corresponding to the first area indicators according to a location of the second gesture.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising adjusting a size of the selection area according to a third gesture performed in the keypad display area.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the third gesture comprises one of a touch-and-drag operation and a drag operation following the second gesture.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein the adjusting of the size of the selection area comprises:

detecting third coordinates of the third gesture, and moving one of the second area indicators according to the detected third coordinates of the third gesture;

detecting fourth coordinates of the text display area corresponding to coordinates of the moved second area indicator, and moving a first area indicator corresponding to the moved second area indicator among the first area indicators to the detected fourth coordinates; and

changing the size of the selection area according to the movement of the first area indicator.
