Abstract

Optical ground tracking apparatus for use with buried object locators or other instruments or devices are disclosed. In one embodiment, a ground tracking apparatus integral with or coupled to a buried object locator includes a housing, a plurality of camera modules, a distance measurement module, and a processing element to generate tracking information based on images or video streams from the camera modules in combination with distance data generated from the distance measurement module.

Claims

1. A buried object locator, comprising:

a housing;

one or more magnetic field antennas;

a buried object detection module in the housing and electrically coupled to the one or more magnetic field antennas for determining the relative position and orientation of a buried object based on magnetic field signals emitted from the buried object;

a pair of camera modules disposed in the housing and oriented along downward and/or outward axes relative to a forward-facing orientation of the housing; and

a processing element disposed in the housing and configured to receive images and/or video streams from the camera modules and generate, based at least in part on the received images or video streams, location or tracking information associated with a movement of the housing.

The locator of claim 1, further comprising one or more distance sensors disposed in the housing, wherein the location or tracking information is further based in part on distance data provided from the distance sensors, and wherein the distance data is associated with a feature of the images or video stream to determine the location or tracking information.

3. The locator of claim 1, wherein the camera modules are oriented downward at an angle of approximately 45 degrees below the horizontal and vertical axes of the locator housing when in an upright orientation.

4. The locator of claim 1, wherein the camera modules are oriented outward at approximately a 30 degree angle from a forward-looking axis of the locator housing when the locator is in an upright orientation.

5. The locator of claim 4, wherein the camera modules are further oriented downward at an angle of approximately 45 degrees below the horizontal and vertical axes of the locator housing when in an upright orientation.

6. The locator of claim 1, further comprising a forward-facing camera module disposed in the housing.

7. The locator of claim 1, further comprising an upward facing camera module disposed in the housing, wherein the processing element is further configured to determine an orientation of the housing based in part on images or video streams received from the upward-facing camera module.

8. The locator of claim 1, further comprising an inertial sensor disposed in the housing and configured to generate an output signal corresponding to a motion of the housing.

9. The locator of claim 8, wherein the inertial sensor is a multi-axis accelerometer.

10. The locator of claim 1, further comprising a compass sensor module configured to generate an output signal corresponding to an orientation of the housing.

11. The locator of claim 1, further comprising one or more satellite positioning system modules configured to receive signals from a plurality of satellites and generate location and/or motion information based on the received satellite signals.

12. The locator of claim 1, wherein the satellite position system is a GPS system and the one or more modules are a GPS receiver module.

13. The locator of claim 12, further including a plurality of spaced-apart GPS antennas coupled to the one or more GPS receiver modules.

14. The locator of claim 1, further wherein the processing element is further configured to receive a plurality of images from the camera modules and digitally stitch together two or more of the images to generate a wider-angle image of the area being viewed.

15. A processor-implemented method for generating tracking information, comprising:

receiving images and/or video streams from a plurality of camera modules disposed in a housing;

and generating, based at least in part on the received images or video streams, location or tracking information associated with a movement of the housing.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising receiving distance data from one or more distance measurement sensors;

and

determining the location or tracking information based in part on the distance data.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the camera modules are oriented downward at an angle of approximately 45 degrees below the horizontal and vertical axes of the housing when in an upright orientation.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein the camera modules are oriented outward at approximately a 30 degree angle from a forward-looking axis of the housing when the housing is in an upright orientation.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the camera modules are further oriented downward at an angle of approximately 45 degrees below the horizontal and vertical axes of the housing when in an upright orientation.

20. The method of claim 15, further comprising determining an orientation of the housing based in part on images or video streams received from an upward-facing camera module.
