Abstract

A battery module includes a plurality of battery cells arranged in a same direction and a same orientation; and a housing portion disposed on the outer surfaces of the plurality of battery cells. In the battery module, the housing portion includes a reinforcing plate positioned between at least two of the battery cells. The reinforcing plate is part of the housing portion, and strengthens the housing portion, thereby enabling a lighter weight battery module and improving the safety of the battery module.

Claims

1. A battery module, comprising:

a plurality of battery cells, each of the battery cells being arranged in a same direction and a same orientation; and

a housing for holding the battery cells, the housing comprising;

a reinforcing plate between two adjacent battery cells;

first and second side plates positioned generally perpendicular to the reinforcing plate, the reinforcing plate being fixed to the first and second side plates; and

first and second end plates, the first end plate being fixed to first ends of the first and second side plates, and the second end plate being fixed to second ends of the first and second side plates.

2. The battery module of claim 1, wherein the reinforcing plate is welded to the first and second side plates.

3. The battery module of claim 2, wherein the reinforcing plate and the first and second side plates are made of the same material.

The battery module of claim 1, wherein one of the reinforcing plate or the first and second side plates includes a groove or hole, and the other of the reinforcing plate and the first and second side plates includes a protrusion, and the protrusion engages the groove or hole to thereby fix the reinforcing plate to the first and second side plates.

5. The battery module of claim 4, wherein the reinforcing plate is welded to the first and second side plates.

6. The battery module of claim 4, wherein the groove is a vertical slit in which the protrusion is configured to slide.

7. The battery module of claim 4, wherein the groove is a notch in which the protrusion is configured to fit.

8. The battery module of claim 1, wherein the reinforcing plate and the first and second side plates are screwed together.

9. The battery module of claim 8, wherein the reinforcing plate includes a first fixing hole, the first and second side plates each include a second fixing hole, and a fixing member extends through the first and second fixing holes.

10. The battery module of claim 1, wherein the two adjacent battery cells between which the reinforcing plate is positioned are the two center-most battery cells in the plurality of battery cells.

11. The battery module of claim 1, wherein a thickness of the reinforcing plate and thicknesses of the first and second side plates are each less than or equal to a thickness of the first and/or second end plates.

12. The battery module of claim 11, wherein the thickness of the reinforcing plate and the thicknesses of the first and second side plates are each about 0.8 mm to about 1 mm, and the thicknesses of the end plates are each about 1.5 mm or greater.

13. The battery module of claim 1, wherein the housing further comprises a bottom plate.

14. The battery module of claim 13, wherein the first and second side plates are fixed to the bottom plate.

15. The battery module of claim 13, wherein the reinforcing plate is fixed to the bottom plate.

16. The battery module of claim 15, wherein the reinforcing plate is welded to the bottom plate.

17. The battery module of claim 15, wherein one of the reinforcing plate or the bottom plate includes a groove or hole, and the other of the reinforcing plate and the bottom plate includes a protrusion, and the protrusion engages the groove or hole to thereby fix the reinforcing plate to the bottom plate.

18. The battery module of claim 15, wherein the reinforcing plate and the bottom plate are screwed together.

19. The battery module of claim 1, wherein the housing comprises stainless steel.

20. The battery module of claim 1, further comprising an insulative coating on the reinforcing plate.

21. The battery module of claim 1, wherein the reinforcing plate comprises a plurality of reinforcing plates, and each of the plurality of reinforcing plates is between a different set of two adjacent battery cells.

22. The battery module of claim 1, wherein a height of the reinforcing plate is equal to or less than a height of the battery cells in the plurality of battery cells.
