Abstract
Arrangements involving portable devices (e.g., smartphones and tablet computers) are disclosed. One arrangement enables a content creator to select software with which that creator'"'"'s content should be rendered—assuring continuity between artistic intention and delivery. Another utilizes a device camera to identify nearby subjects, and take actions based thereon. Others rely on near field chip (RFID) identification of objects, or on identification of audio streams (e.g., music, voice). Some technologies concern improvements to the user interfaces associated with such devices. Others involve use of these devices in connection with shopping, text entry, sign language interpretation, and vision-based discovery. Still other improvements are architectural in nature, e.g., relating to evidence-based state machines, and blackboard systems. Yet other technologies concern use of linked data in portable devices—some of which exploit GPU capabilities. Still other technologies concern computational photography. A great variety of other features and arrangements are also detailed.

22. A lighting fixture comprising:
-
a light emitter including at least one light emitting diode, for illuminating a work space; a sensor system including a microphone or a camera; and a transcoder adapted to modulate light emitted by the light emitting diode, in accordance with data output from said sensor system. - View Dependent Claims (23, 24)

25. A method employing a light emitter including at least one light emitting diode, the method comprising the acts:
-
sensing data from an ambient environment, using a sensor system including a microphone or a camera; decoding information from said sensed data; and encoding light emitted by said light emitting diode based on said decoded information. - View Dependent Claims (26, 27, 28)

29. A method employing plural light emitters that serve to illuminate a work space, each of said emitters including a light emitting diode, said emitters producing light of different color spectra, the method comprising the acts:
-
modulating at least a first of said emitters to optically convey data to a remote optical sensor in said work space; and compensatorily modulating at least a different, second, one of said emitters to help maintain a quality of the light illuminating the room, despite the modulation of the first of said emitters to convey data; wherein said quality comprises constant luminance or constant hue. - View Dependent Claims (30, 31)
