Abstract

A method of operating a security monitoring system comprises defining a primary user at a location, defining at least one backup user based on input from the primary user, determining that an event has taken place that the primary contact is to be notified of, notifying the primary user of the event, and if the primary user does not respond to the notification in a predetermined period of time, notifying the at least one backup contact of the event. Backup users may be defined based on input from the primary user. Backup contacts may be contacted in an order based on the preferences of the primary user or the location of the backup contacts, for example. The police, a fire department, and/or an ambulance service may be notified if the primary user and the backup contact do not respond to the notifications. Systems are also disclosed.

Claims

1. A method of operating a security monitoring system, comprising:

defining a primary user at a location;

defining at least one backup user based on input from the primary user;

determining that an event has taken place that the primary contact is to be notified of;

notifying the primary user of the event; and

if the primary user does not respond to the notification in a predetermined period of time, notifying the at least one backup contact of the event.

2. The method of claim 1, comprising:

defining a plurality of backup users based on input from the primary user;

if the primary user does not respond to the event in a predetermined period of time, notifying at least some of the plurality of backup user of the event.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

determining location of the backup contacts; and

contacting one of the plurality of backup users based on the location of the one backup contact.

4. The method of claim 3, comprising:

contacting the backup contacts in an order based on the locations of the backup contacts.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

notifying police and/or fire department if the primary user and the backup contact do not respond to the notifications.

6. The method of claim 5, comprising:

notifying police, a fire department, and/or an ambulance service, by a call center.

7. The method of claim 1, comprising:

contacting the primary user and the at least one backup user by a call center.

8. The method of claim 3, comprising contacting the backup contacts in an order defined by user preferences.

9. A security monitoring system comprising:

a processing device; and

memory an identification of a primary user of the system and, backup contacts to the primary user;

wherein the processing device is configured to;

determine that an event has taken place in a location that the primary user is to be notified of;

notify a primary user of the event at the location via a network; and

notify at least one back up contact if the primary user does not respond within a predetermined period of time, via the network.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein the processing device is configured to:

define a plurality of backup users based on input from the primary user; and

if the primary user does not respond to the event in a predetermined period of time, notifying at least one of the plurality of backup user of the event.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the processing device is configured to:

determine locations of the backup contacts; and

contact one of the plurality of backup users based on the location of the one backup contact.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the processing device is configured to:

contact the backup contacts in an order based on the locations of the backup contacts.

13. The system of claim 9, wherein the processing device is configured to:

notify police, a fire department, and/or an ambulance service if the primary user and the backup contact do not respond to the notifications.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the processing device is configured to:

instruct a call center to notify police, a fire department, and/or an ambulance service.

15. The system of claim 9, wherein the processing device is configured to:

contact the primary user and the at least one backup user by a call center.

16. The system of claim 10, wherein the processing device is configured to:

contact the backup contacts in an order defined by user preferences.
