Abstract

A cutting insert for metalworking operations is retained within a cutting insert holder by a resilient tab on the holder that engages a recess on the stem of the insert. The cutting insert and the holder may be fabricated using rapid prototyping techniques such as 3D printing.

Claims

1. A cutting insert, comprising:

a body having a head at an end of the body and a stem at an opposite end of the body, wherein the stem extends along a longitudinal axis;

a cutting edge at the head; and

a locking surface at the stem, wherein the locking surface is made up of a locking recess extending into the stem.

2. The cutting insert of claim 1, wherein the body has a length, width and depth, the length being greater than the width.

3. The cutting insert of claim 1, wherein the width of the head is greater than the width of the stem.

4. The cutting insert of claim 1, wherein the cutting edge is formed along the perimeter at a top face of the head and a relief surface is formed behind the cutting edge.

5. The cutting insert of claim 1, wherein the locking recess is formed at a top face of the stem and in the shape of a channel oriented in the direction of a width direction of the cutting insert.

6. The cutting insert of claim 5, wherein the locking surface is substantially normal to the stem longitudinal axis.

7. The cutting insert of claim 5, wherein the locking surface forms an angle α

with the stem longitudinal axis of between 60-90 degrees.

8. The cutting insert of claim 1, wherein a bottom face of the stem has a semi cylindrical shape.

9. The cutting insert of claim 1, wherein a bottom face of the head has a hemispherical shape.

10. The cutting insert of claim 1, wherein top faces of the head and stem of the body are substantially planar.

11. A cutting insert holder adapted to receive at least one cutting insert, comprising;

a holder body;

a cavity formed within the body for receiving a cutting insert; and

a resilient locking tab disposed within the cavity and partially obstructing the cavity such that the resilient locking tab is displaced from an initial position to allow insertion of the cutting insert into the cavity and returns toward the initial position to lockingly engage with a locking surface of the cutting insert.

12. The body of claim 11, wherein the body is rotatable about an axis of rotation, and wherein the body is cylindrical and has a first end and a cylindrical side surface.

13. The body of claim 12, wherein at least one retention pocket is formed at the first end within the side surface about the axis of rotation.

14. The body of claim 13, wherein a cavity is formed within the body at each retention pocket.

15. The body of claim 14, wherein a head support surface is disposed at an end of the retention pocket and adjacent to each respective cavity in a direction opposite to a cutting rotation direction of the body for supporting a bottom face of a head of a cutting insert inserted into the respective insertion cavity.

16. The body of claim 14, wherein each cavity extends within the holder body in a direction toward the axis of rotation.

17. The body of claim 11, wherein the cavity includes a support passageway having a surface for supporting a stem of the cutting insert within the cavity and the support passageway extends along an axis.

18. The body of claim 11, wherein the resilient locking tab extends from a wall of the cavity.

19. The body of claim 11, wherein the resilient locking tab includes a sloped bevel for guiding the locking tab during the insertion of the cutting insert into the insertion cavity.

20. A system comprising at least one cutting insert and a cutting insert holder adapted to receive the at least one cutting insert,

wherein the cutting insert comprises:

a body having a head at an end of the body and a stem at an opposite end of the body;

a cutting edge at the head; and

a locking surface at the stem, wherein the locking surface is made up of a locking recess extending into the stem,

wherein the cutting insert holder comprises;

a body;

a cavity formed into the body for receiving the stem of the cutting insert therein; and

a resilient locking tab disposed within the cavity and partially obstructing the cavity such that the resilient locking tab is displaced from an initial position to allow insertion of the stem of the cutting insert into the cavity and returns toward the original position to lockingly engage with the locking surface of the cutting insert.

21. The system of claim 20, wherein a gap is formed between a surface of an opening to the cavity and a surface of the inserted cutting insert, wherein the gap leads to a portion of the resilient locking tab such that the resilient locking tab may be displaced from engagement with the locking surface of the cutting insert by insertion of an object into the gap.

22. The system of claim 20, wherein a gap is formed between a surface of an opening to the cavity and a surface of the inserted cutting insert such that a cooling fluid can flow from the cavity to the cutting edge of the cutting insert.

23. The system of claim 22, the cutting insert holder further comprising a cooling channel leading from a cooling fluid supply to the cavity of the cutting insert holder to supply a cooling fluid to the cavity.

24. A method of manufacturing a cutting insert, the method comprising:

forming, through a sequential layering process;

a body having a head at an end of the body and a stem at an opposite end of the body;

a cutting edge at the head; and

a locking surface at the stem, wherein the locking surface is made up of a locking recess extending into the stem.

25. A method of manufacturing a body adapted to receive at least one cutting insert, the method comprising:

forming, through a sequential layering process;

a body having a cavity formed into the body for receiving a portion of a cutting insert therein; and

a resilient locking tab disposed within the cavity and partially obstructing the cavity such that the resilient locking tab is displaced from an initial position to allow insertion of the cutting insert into the cavity and returns toward the original position to lockingly engage with a locking surface of the cutting insert.
