Abstract

An HVAC controller may include a controller and a display operatively coupled to the controller. A first region of the display may have an array of pixels arranged in a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns for displaying an image in a dot matrix format. A second region of the display may have a plurality of predefined fixed segment graphical icons. The controller may be configured to display a list of one or more programmable options of the HVAC controller in the first region of the display for selection by a user. At least one of the one or more programmable options may be used to set settings that are used for controlling subsequent operations and/or functionality of the HVAC controller. The first region of the display may simultaneously display in a vertical direction an integer number of programmable options plus a fraction of a programmable option.

Claims

1. An HVAC controller, comprising:

a controller;

a display operatively coupled to the controller, the display comprising;

a first region having an array of pixels arranged in a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns for displaying an image in a dot matrix format;

a second region having a plurality of predefined fixed segment graphical icons;

the controller is configured to display a list of one or more programmable options of the HVAC controller in the first region of the display for selection by a user, at least one of the one or more programmable options used to set settings that are used for controlling subsequent operation and/or functionality of the HVAC controller; and

wherein the first region of the display simultaneously displays in a vertical direction an integer number of programmable options plus a fraction of a programmable option.

2. The HVAC controller of claim 1, wherein the fraction of a programmable option is vertically positioned below the integer number of programmable options to indicate there are more option available by scrolling down.

3. The HVAC controller of claim 1, wherein the fraction of a programmable option is vertically positioned above the integer number of programmable options to indicate there are more options available by scrolling up.

4. The HVAC controller of claim 1, wherein:

the fraction of a programmable option is a first fraction of a programmable option, the first fraction of a programmable option is vertically positioned above the integer number of programmable options; and

a second fraction of a programmable option is vertically positioned below the integer number of programmable options.

5. The HVAC controller of claim 1, wherein the integer number of programmable options is on a full vertical line of text.

6. The HVAC controller of claim 1, wherein the fraction of a programmable option is on a partial vertical line of text.

7. The HVAC controller of claim 6, wherein the partial vertical line of text is about a half line of text.

8. The HVAC controller of claim 1, wherein the fraction of a programmable option is vertically positioned below the integer number of programmable options and no fraction of a programmable option is vertically positioned above the integer number of programmable options, a top of the list of one or more programmable options is displayed.

9. The HVAC controller of claim 1, wherein the fraction of a programmable option is vertically positioned above the integer number of programmable options and no fraction of a programmable option is vertically positioned below the integer number of programmable options, a bottom of the list of one or more programmable options is displayed.

10. The HVAC controller of claim 1, wherein the first region of the display simultaneously displays in a vertical direction two programmable options plus a fraction of a third programmable option.

11. The HVAC controller of claim 1, wherein the controller allows the user to select between two or more programmable options and allows for selection by the user of one of the integer number of programmable options.

12. The HVAC controller of claim 11, wherein the controller is configured to allow a user to scroll through the two or more programmable options in the first region, and as the user scrolls through the two or more programmable options, the programmable options appear to move in a vertical direction.

13. An HVAC controller, comprising:

a controller;

a display operatively coupled to the controller, the display comprising;

a first region having an array of pixels arranged in a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns for displaying an image in a dot matrix format;

a second region having a plurality of predefined fixed segment graphical icons;

the controller is configured to display one or more menu options of a list of menu options in the first region of the display for selection by a user, at least one or more menu options used to navigate to a menu that allows a user to change a programmable option that modifies subsequent operation and/or functionality of the HVAC controller; and

wherein the first region of the display simultaneously displays a full line of vertical text and a partial line of vertical text.

14. The HVAC controller of claim 13, wherein the full line of vertical text includes a selectable menu option.

15. The HVAC controller of claim 13, wherein the partial line of vertical text is an indication that one or more menu options are available by scrolling through the one or more menu options in a direction of the partial line of vertical text.

16. The HVAC controller of claim 13, wherein the partial line of vertical text is vertically positioned below the full line of vertical text and no partial line of vertical text is positioned above the full line of vertical text, a top of the list of menu options is displayed.

17. The HVAC controller of claim 13, wherein the partial line of vertical text is vertically positioned above the full line of vertical text and no partial line of vertical text is positioned below the full line of vertical text, a bottom of the list of menu options is displayed.

18. The HVAC controller of claim 13, where the partial line of vertical text is about half a line of vertical text.

19. A method comprising:

displaying a first option of an HVAC controller on a full line of vertical text in a first region of a display of the HVAC controller, the first region having an array of pixels arranged in a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns for displaying an image in a dot matrix format;

displaying a second option of an HVAC controller on a partial line of vertical text in the first region of the display of the HVAC controller;

accepting an input from a user;

in response to accepting the input from the user, displaying the second option of an HVAC controller in a full line of vertical text and displaying one or more of the first option of an HVAC controller and a third option of an HVAC controller in a partial line of vertical text; and

wherein the first option, the second option, and the third option of the HVAC controller are in a list of options of the HVAC controller.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising:

scrolling through the list of options of the HVAC controller in a direction of the partial line of vertical text to view one or more options on the list of options of the HVAC controller.
