Abstract

A method for analyzing diabetes related information by a diabetes management application residing on a computing device. The method may include: receiving a data entry over a communication link from a blood glucose meter, where the data entry includes a glucose measurement and an indicator of a pre-established activity associated with the glucose measurement; evaluating the data entry in relation to a subject structured test based in part by comparing the indicator from the data entry with collection events associated with the subject structured test; identifying the data entry as compatible with the subject structured test when the data entry correlates with a given collection event specified by the subject structured test; identifying the data entry as non-compatible with the subject structured test when the data entry does not correlate with the given collection event specified by the subject structured test; and inputting the data entry into a logbook.

Claims

1. A method for analyzing diabetes related information by a diabetes management application residing on a computing device, the method comprising:

retrieving, by the diabetes management application, requirements for a subject structured test from among a plurality of structured tests being stored in a test repository on the computing device, each of the plurality of structured tests specifies one or more collection events at which a glucose measurement is required for the structured test, wherein the diabetes management application is implemented as computer executable instructions executed by a computer processor of the computing device;

receiving, by the diabetes management application, a data entry over a communication link from the blood glucose meter, wherein the data entry includes a glucose measurement and an indicator of a pre-established activity associated with the glucose measurement;

evaluating, by the diabetes management application, the data entry in relation to the subject structured test based in part by comparing the indicator from the data entry with the collection events associated with the subject structured test;

identifying, by the diabetes management application, the data entry as compatible with the subject structured test when the data entry correlates with a given collection event specified by the subject structured test;

identifying, by the diabetes management application, the data entry as non-compatible with the subject structured test when the data entry does not correlate with the given collection event specified by the subject structured test; and

inputting, by the diabetes management application, the data entry into a logbook residing in a data store on the mobile device.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the indicator includes an event flag that identifies the pre-established activity and is one of multiple predefined event flags defined by the blood glucose meter.

The method of claim 1 wherein the indicator includes a timestamp and an event flag, the timestamp indicates a time at which the glucose measurement was taken, and the event flag indicates the pre-established activity and is one of multiple predefined event flags defined by the blood glucose meter.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the evaluating, by the diabetes management application, the data entry in relation to the subject structured test further comprises:

determining, by the diabetes management application, whether the indicator includes an event flag, wherein the event flag indicates the pre-established activity and is one of multiple predefined event flags defined by the blood glucose meter; and

in the event that the indicator includes the event flag, evaluating, by the diabetes management application, the event flag with multiple structured test flags for the subject structured test, wherein

the data entry correlates with the given collection event specified by the subject structured test, when the event flag is compatible with a subject structured test flag defined for the given collection event of the subject structured test, the subject structured test flag is one of multiple structured test flags, and

the data entry does not correlate with the given collection event specified by the subject structured test, when the event flag is incompatible with the structured test flag defined for the given collection event.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the evaluating, by the diabetes management application, the data entry in relation to the subject structured test further comprises:

in the event that the indicator does not include the event flag, associating, by the diabetes management application, a default flag with the glucose measurement based on a timestamp of the glucose measurement, wherein the default flag is one of the multiple structured test flags.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprises:

evaluating, by the diabetes management application, the data entry in relation to the subject structured test using a membership rule set, wherein the membership rule set defines rules for associating the data entry with the subject structured tests; and

associating, by the diabetes management application, the data entry with the subject structured test when the data entry is identified as compatible with the subject structured test and when the data entry satisfies a rule from the membership rules set for the subject structured test, wherein

the data entry is inputted into the logbook with the association to the subject structured test.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein in the event the data entry is non-compatible with the subject structured test, the data entry is inputted into the logbook without an association to the subject structured test.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the indicator includes a timestamp which indicates a time at which the glucose measurement was taken, and the method further comprises:

comparing, by the diabetes management application, the timestamp of the glucose measurement with an acceptance window for the collection events for the subject structured test, wherein the acceptance window defines a period of time within which a glucose measurement is required for the collection event; and

inputting, by the diabetes management application, the data entry into the logbook without identifying whether the data entry as compatible or non-compatible with the subject structured test when the timestamp of the glucose measurement is outside the acceptance window for the collection events specified by the subject structured test.

9. A diabetes management application residing on a computing device, comprising:

a structured test module administering a subject structured test from among a plurality of structured tests being stored in a test repository on the computing device, wherein each of the plurality of structured tests specifies one or more collection events at which a glucose measurement is required for the structured test;

an input module receiving a data entry from a blood glucose meter via a communication link between the computing device and the blood glucose meter, wherein the data entry includes a glucose measurement and an indicator of a pre-established activity associated with the glucose measurement; and

a membership module receiving a given data entry from the input module and evaluating the given data entry with the subject structured test based on a membership rule set and a reconciliation rule set stored in a data store of the portable communication device, wherein the reconciliation rule set defines rules to correlate the given data entry with a given collection event specified by the subject structured test based on the indicator of the given data entry and the membership rules set defines rules to associate the given data entry with the subject structured test.

10. The diabetes management application of claim 9 wherein

the membership module inputs the given data entry into the logbook with the association to the subject structured test when the given data entry correlates with the given collection event specified by the subject structured test and the given data entry satisfies a rule from the membership rules set for the subject structure test, and

the membership module inputs the given data entry into the logbook without the association to the subject structured test when the given data entry does not correlate with the given collection event specified by the subject structured test.

11. The diabetes management application of claim 9 wherein the indicator includes an event flag that identifies the pre-established activity and is one of multiple predefined event flags defined by the blood glucose meter.

The diabetes management application of claim 9 wherein the indicator includes a timestamp and an event flag, the timestamp indicates a time at which the glucose measurement was taken, and the event flag indicates the pre-established activity and is one of multiple predefined event flags defined by the blood glucose meter.

13. The diabetes management application of claim 9 wherein

the indicator includes an event flag that indicates the pre-established activity and is one of multiple predefined event flags defined by the blood glucose meter,

the membership module evaluates the event flag with multiple structured test flags for the subject structured test,

the membership module determines that the given data entry correlates with the given collection event for the subject structured test when the event flag is compatible with a subject structured test flag defined for the given collection event of the subject structured test, the subject structured test flag is one of multiple structured test flags, and

the membership module determines that the data entry does not correlate with the given collection event for the subject structured test, when the event flag is incompatible with the structured test flags defined for the given collection event.

14. The diabetes management application of claim 9 wherein

the membership module determines whether the indicator includes an event flag that indicates the pre-established activity and is one of multiple predefined event flags defined by the blood glucose meter,

the membership module determines whether the given data entry correlates with the given collection event for the subject structured test based on the reconciliation rules and the event flag when the indicator includes the event flag, and

the membership module sets a default flag based on a timestamp of the glucose measurement when the indicator does not include the event flag, the default flag is one of multiple structured test flags defined for the subject structured test.

15. The diabetes management application of claim 9 wherein

the indicator includes a timestamp that indicates a time at which the glucose measurement was taken, and

the membership module inputs the given data entry into the logbook without the association to the subject test the when the timestamp of the glucose measurement is outside of an acceptance window for the collection events associated with the subject structured test, the acceptance window defines a period of time within which a glucose measurement is required for the collection event.

16. The diabetes management application of claim 9 wherein the reconciliation rules set includes:

a first rule that correlates the given data entry with the given collection event for the subject structured test when the indicator is compatible with a subject structured test flag for the given collection event of the subject structured test, the structured test flag is one of multiple structured test flags defined for the subject structured test, and

a second rule that does not correlate the given data entry with the given collection event for the subject structured test when the indicator is incompatible with the subject structured test flag for the given collection event of the subject structured test.

17. The diabetes management application of claim 9 wherein the membership rules set includes:

a first rule that does not associate the given data entry with the subject structured test when the glucose measurement of the given data entry is outside of an acceptance window for the collection events for the subject structured test, the acceptance window defines a period of time within which a glucose measurement is required for the collection event, and

a second rule that associates the given data entry with the subject structured test when the glucose measurement of the given data entry is within the acceptance window for the collection events for the subject structured test, and the given data entry correlates with the given collection event specified by the subject structured test based on the indicator of the given data entry and the reconciliation rule set.
