Abstract

Methods and arrangements involving portable devices, such as smartphones and tablet computers, are disclosed. One particular arrangement concerns a software program that is launched following detection of audio content performed by a first musical artist. A phone can be provided with plural such software programs, tailored to respond to different types of detected content. Another aspect of the disclosed technology enables a creator of content to select software with which that creator'"'"'s content should be rendered—assuring continuity between artistic intention and delivery. A great variety of other features and arrangements are also detailed.

Claims

1. A smartphone comprising a microphone, one or more processors, and a memory containing software instructions, the system being adapted to process audio content captured by the microphone, and provide the processed audio to a service for determination of identifying metadata for the captured audio content through use of audio fingerprinting or digital watermarking, said software instructions including:

a first software program adapted to respond to audio content performed by a first musical artist; and

a second software program operative to receive said identifying metadata about the captured audio content, determined by said service, the received metadata including a name of a musical artist that performed the captured audio;

wherein the first and second software programs are arranged to cooperate with each other so as to enable execution of the first software program when the identifying metadata for said captured audio content received by the second software program indicates that the musical artist that performed the captured audio is said first musical artist.

The smartphone of claim 1 that further includes a third software program that is adapted to respond to audio content performed by a second musical artist, different than said first musical artist, wherein the third and second software programs cooperate to enable execution of the third software program when the identifying metadata for said captured audio content received by the second software program indicates that the musical artist that performed the captured audio is said second musical artist.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the first software program is not adapted to respond to audio content performed by said second musical artist.

4. A smartphone comprising a microphone, one or more processors, and a memory containing software instructions for execution by said processor(s), the system including circuitry adapted to process audio content captured by the microphone, and provide the processed audio to a service for determination of identifying metadata for the captured audio content through use of audio fingerprinting or digital watermarking, said identifying metadata including data indicating a musical artist that performed the captured audio content, said software instructions including a first software program that is responsive when said metadata indicates the captured content was performed by a first musical artist, but is not responsive when said metadata indicates the captured content was performed by a second musical artist, wherein said first software program of the smartphone responds to audio content performed by some, but not all, musical artists.

The smartphone of claim 4 that further includes a second software program that is responsive when said metadata indicates the captured content was performed by a second musical artist, but is not responsive when said metadata indicates the captured content was performed by another, different, musical artist.

6. The smartphone of claim 5 wherein neither the first nor second software program is responsive when said metadata indicates the captured content was performed by a third musical artist that is different than the first musical artist and different than the second musical artist.

7. The smartphone of claim 4 in which said circuitry comprises said one or more processors.

8. A non-transitory computer readable medium containing first software program instructions for execution on a smartphone that employs a microphone to capture audio content, said first software program being operative (a) to provide content that complements the microphone-captured audio content, or (b) to offer a buying opportunity related to the microphone-captured audio content, in response to microphone-captured audio content performed by a first musical artist, but not in response to microphone-captured audio content performed by a second, different, musical artist, said first software program being adapted to cooperate with a second software program that receives, from an audio fingerprint or digital watermark service, metadata that identifies the musical artist that performed said microphone-captured audio content, and enables launching of the first software program when said identified musical artist is said first musical artist.

9. A method practiced employing a smartphone including a touchscreen, a camera and a microphone, the method comprising the acts:

receiving first audio or image content;

processing the first received content to produce first processed data;

transferring the first processed data to a service for fingerprint- or watermark-based identification of the received content, and receiving back first content identifying metadata data from the service, the first content identifying metadata data including first proprietor data indicating an artist or company responsible for producing the content; and

identifying, for execution, a first software program, from among plural software programs, based on said first proprietor data.

10. The method of claim 9 that further includes launching said identified first program, wherein the smartphone launches a program dependent on the artist or company responsible for producing the received content.

11. The method of claim 9 that further includes:

receiving second audio or image content, different from said first content;

processing the second received content to produce second processed data;

transferring the second processed data to a service for fingerprint- or watermark-based identification of the received content, and receiving back second content identifying metadata data from the service, the second content identifying metadata data including second proprietor data indicating an artist or company responsible for the content;

identifying a second software program, from among plural software programs, based on said second proprietor data; and

launching said identified second program;

wherein the second program is different than the first program, because the second proprietor is different than the first proprietor.

12. The method of claim 9 in which the first content comprises audio content.

13. The method of claim 12 that further includes receiving the audio content using said microphone of the smartphone.

14. The method of claim 9 in which the first content comprises image content.

15. The method of claim 14 that further includes receiving the image content using said camera of the smartphone.
