Abstract

A method and a device for managing mobility of a mobile station in an Internet Protocol (IP) based network are provided. The method includes receiving a request for allocation of an IP address from an application, determining a type of IP address to be allocated to the application based on the request for the allocation of the IP address, and allocating the determined type of IP address to the application.

Claims

1. A method of managing mobility in an Internet Protocol (IP) based network by a mobile station, the method comprising:

receiving a request for allocation of an IP address from an application;

determining a type of IP address to be allocated to the application based on the request for the allocation of the IP address; and

allocating the determined type of IP address to the application.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the determined type of IP address comprises one of a first type of IP address anchored to a core network, a second type of IP address anchored to an access network, and a third type of IP address which is not anchored to any networks.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

configuring the determined type of IP address when the determined type of IP address does not exist in an IP stack.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the type of IP address is determined depending on characteristics of the application.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein the second type of IP address is allocated to the application when an anchor distance is shorter than a threshold value.

6. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

receiving a notification for un-configuring the allocated IP address from the application; and

un-configuring the allocated IP address when the IP address corresponding to the notification is the first type of IP address or the second type of IP address.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

newly configuring the third type of IP address when no IP address is left after un-configuring the allocated IP address.

8. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

replacing the third type of IP address by the second type of IP address when allocation of the second type of IP address is requested from the application and the second type of IP address does not exist in the IP stack.

9. A mobile station for managing mobility in an Internet Protocol (IP) based network, the mobile station comprising:

an IP stack configured to receive a request for allocation of an IP address from an application, determine a type of IP address to be allocated to the application based on the request for the allocation of the IP address, and allocate the determined type of IP address to the application; and

a mobile Application Programming Interface (API) arranged between the IP stack and at least one application.

10. The mobile station of claim 9, wherein the determined type of IP address comprises one of a first type of IP address anchored to a core network, a second type of IP address anchored to an access network, and a third type of IP address which is not anchored to any networks.

11. The mobile station of claim 9, wherein the IP stack configures the determined type of IP address when the determined type of IP address does not exist in an IP stack.

12. The mobile station of claim 9, wherein the type of IP address is determined depending on characteristics of the application.

13. The mobile station of claim 10, wherein the second type of IP address is allocated to the application when an anchor distance is shorter than a threshold value.

14. The mobile station of claim 10, wherein the IP stack receives a notification for un-configuring the allocated IP address from the application, and un-configures the allocated IP address when the IP address corresponding to the notification is the first type of IP address or the second type of IP address.

15. The mobile station of claim 14, wherein the IP stack newly configures the third type of IP address when no IP address is left after un-configuring the allocated IP address.

16. The mobile station of claim 10, wherein the IP stack replaces the third type of IP address by the second type of IP address when allocation of the second type of IP address is requested from the application and the second type of IP address does not exist in the IP stack.

17. A device readable recording medium for substantially implementing a program of instructions which are to be executed by a device performing a method of managing mobility in an Internet Protocol (IP) based network, wherein the method comprises:

receiving a request for allocation of an IP address from an application;

determining a type of IP address to be allocated to the application based on the request for the allocation of the IP address; and

allocating the determined type of IP address to the application.

18. The device readable recording medium of claim 17, wherein the determined type of IP address comprises one of a first type of IP address anchored to a core network, a second type of IP address anchored to an access network, and a third type of IP address which is not anchored to any networks.

19. The device readable recording medium of claim 17, wherein the method further comprises:

configuring the determined type of IP address when the determined type of IP address does not exist in an IP stack.

20. The device readable recording medium of claim 17, wherein the type of IP address is determined depending on characteristics of the application.

21. The device readable recording medium of claim 18, wherein the second type of IP address is allocated to the application when an anchor distance is shorter than a threshold value.

22. The device readable recording medium of claim 18, wherein the method further comprises:

receiving a notification for un-configuring the allocated IP address from the application; and

un-configuring the allocated IP address when the IP address corresponding to the notification is the first type of IP address or the second type of IP address.

23. The device readable recording medium of claim 22, wherein the method further comprises:

newly configuring the third type of IP address when no IP address is left after un-configuring the allocated IP address.

24. The device readable recording medium of claim 18, wherein the method further comprises:

replacing the third type of IP address by the second type of IP address when allocation of the second type of IP address is requested from the application and the second type of IP address does not exist in the IP stack.
