AUDIO CONTENT MONITORING AND IDENTIFICATION OF BROADCAST RADIO STATIONS
First Claim
1. A method to audit the content of a broadcaster by determining identification of audio content played by said broadcaster, including the artist and title of songs, by comparing an acoustic fingerprint, being a digital representation of a song or a portion of a song or other audio content, with a database of audio content having acoustic fingerprints associated with the identification of audio content elements, including the artist and title of songs, and receiving the identification of the audio content if a match is found, said broadcaster having an audio system with an audio output connected to a transmitter and also connected to an audio analysis system, the audio analysis system having available a fingerprinting system and a database system having a database of audio content fingerprints, said database associating acoustic fingerprints with identifiers of audio content elements including the artist and title of songs, comprising the steps of:
- a. analyzing said audio output by said audio analysis system to determine the approximate beginning of a new audio content element, including a new song;
b. submitting a portion up to the entirety of a new audio content element to said fingerprinting system for the creation of an acoustic fingerprint of the new audio content element once the approximate beginning of said new audio content element has been detected;
c. submitting said acoustic fingerprint of said audio content element to said database system for comparison with fingerprints in the database;
d. receiving the identification of the audio content element from the database system in the case where an acoustic fingerprint in the database matches the acoustic fingerprint being compared, or returning to step (a) if a match is not found;
e. submitting said received identification of audio content elements to an accounting system which records said received identifications; and
,f. returning to step (a) for retrieval of the artist and title of another audio content element.

Abstract
A method and system to monitor and audit the audio output of a broadcaster to determine songs and commercials that are played by the implementation of a computer application at a broadcaster that receives the broadcaster'"'"'s audio output, determines transitions between audio content, upon detecting a transition, creates an acoustic fingerprint of that content, compares the fingerprint against a database of song fingerprints, and upon finding a match of a fingerprint of an audio item in the database, recording that occurrence in an accounting system with reference to the broadcaster.

-
a. analyzing said audio output by said audio analysis system to determine the approximate beginning of a new audio content element, including a new song; b. submitting a portion up to the entirety of a new audio content element to said fingerprinting system for the creation of an acoustic fingerprint of the new audio content element once the approximate beginning of said new audio content element has been detected; c. submitting said acoustic fingerprint of said audio content element to said database system for comparison with fingerprints in the database; d. receiving the identification of the audio content element from the database system in the case where an acoustic fingerprint in the database matches the acoustic fingerprint being compared, or returning to step (a) if a match is not found; e. submitting said received identification of audio content elements to an accounting system which records said received identifications; and
,f. returning to step (a) for retrieval of the artist and title of another audio content element. - View Dependent Claims (2, 3, 4, 5)

6. A non-transitory machine-readable medium containing processor readable code for programming a processor for use in operating a system to determine the identification of audio content played by a broadcaster, including the artist and title of songs, by comparing an acoustic fingerprint, being a digital representation of a song or a portion of a song or other audio content element, with a database of audio content having acoustic fingerprints associated with the identification of audio content elements, including the artist and title of songs, and receiving the identification of the audio content if a match is found, said broadcaster having an audio system with an audio output connected to a transmitter and also connected to an audio analysis system, the audio analysis system having available a fingerprinting system and a database system having a database of audio content fingerprints, said database associating acoustic fingerprints with identifiers of audio content elements including artist and title of songs, comprising:
-
a. a routine for analyzing said audio output by said audio analysis system to determine the approximate beginning of a new audio content element, including a new song; b. a routine for submitting a portion up to the entirety of a new audio content element to said fingerprinting system for the creation of an acoustic fingerprint of the new audio content element once the approximate beginning of said new audio content element has been detected; c. a routine for submitting said acoustic fingerprint of said audio content element to said database system for comparison with fingerprints in the database; d. a routine for receiving the identification of the audio content element from the database system in the case where an acoustic fingerprint in the database matches the acoustic fingerprint being compared, or returning to step (a) if a match is not found; e. a routine for submitting said received identification of audio content elements to an accounting system which records said received identifications; and
,f. a routine for returning to step (a) for retrieval of the artist and title of another audio content element. - View Dependent Claims (7, 8, 9, 10)

11. A system to determine the identification of audio content including the artist and title of songs played by a broadcaster by comparing an acoustic fingerprint, being a digital representation of an audio content element such as a song or a portion of a song, with a database having acoustic fingerprints associated with identifiers of audio content elements, including the artist and title of songs, and, and retrieving the identification of the audio content element if a match is found, comprising:
-
a. an audio system of said broadcaster having an audio output connected to a transmitter and also connected to an audio analysis system; b. an audio analysis system having available a fingerprinting system and a database system, said database system associating acoustic fingerprints with the identification of said acoustic content elements, including the artist and title of songs, said audio analysis system arranged to determine the approximate beginning of an audio content element; c. a fingerprinting system available to the audio analysis system and arranged to create an acoustic fingerprint of said audio content element; and
