Abstract

Various embodiments include a method and system for application above-the-fold rendering measurements. A start time corresponding to a rendering operation of an application may be recorded. A series of bitmaps of a portion of a rendering canvas representing above-the-fold data for the application may be captured. The first of the series of bitmaps may be captured at the start time and successive captured bitmaps each captured after a specified time interval from a previously captured bitmap. Each bitmap in the series of bitmaps may then be processed to create a corresponding measurement image, and the measurement images may be compared to determine an end time.

Claims

1. A device including:

a capture module to capture a series of images of a portion of a rendering canvas of an application executing on the device, the portion corresponding to a visual component of the application;

a processing module to process the series of images into respective measurement metrics; and

a comparing module to compare the measurement metrics to each other to determine a time in which the metrics first match between a first measurement metric and subsequent measurement metrics.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the visual component is an advertisement.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the visual component is a menu.

4. The device of claim 1, comprising an initiation module, the initiation module to capture a start time.

5. The device of claim 4, wherein the start time is captured in response to a rendering operation of the application.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the measurement metrics are each a count of pixels of a color in a respective image.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein images in the series of images are uncompressed raster images, and wherein the measurement metrics are each a size of a respective image after compression.

8. A method implemented by a computing device, the method including:

capturing a series of images of a portion of a rendering canvas of an application executing on the device, the portion corresponding to a visual component of the application;

processing the series of images into respective measurement metrics; and

comparing the measurement metrics to each other to determine a time in which the metrics first match between a first measurement metric and subsequent measurement metrics.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the visual component is an advertisement.

10. The method of claim 8, wherein the visual component is a menu.

11. The method of claim 8, comprising capturing a start time.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the start time is captured in response to a rendering operation of the application.

13. The method of claim 8, wherein the measurement metrics are each a count of pixels of a color in a respective image.

14. The method of claim 8, wherein images in the series of images are uncompressed raster images, and wherein the measurement metrics are each a size of a respective image after compression.

15. A computer readable medium that is not a transitory propagating signal, the machine readable medium including instructions that, when executed by a machine, cause the machine to perform operations comprising:

capturing a series of images of a portion of a rendering canvas of an application executing on the device, the portion corresponding to a visual component of the application;

processing the series of images into respective measurement metrics; and

comparing the measurement metrics to each other to determine a time in which the metrics first match between a first measurement metric and subsequent measurement metrics.

16. The computer readable medium of claim 15, wherein the visual component is an advertisement.

17. The computer readable medium of claim 15, wherein the visual component is a menu.

18. The computer readable medium of claim 15, comprising capturing a start time in response to a rendering operation of the application.

19. The computer readable medium of claim 15, wherein the measurement metrics are each a count of pixels of a color in a respective image.

20. The computer readable medium of claim 15, wherein images in the series of images are uncompressed raster images, and wherein the measurement metrics are each a size of a respective image after compression.
