Abstract

A method in a multimedia device (130) including obtaining protected content having a limited exercisable right associated therewith, obtaining an extension of the limited exercisable right when a condition is satisfied, for example, when the device enters a DRM system different than the DRM system from which the protected content originated, wherein the extension of the limited exercisable right is obtained from an entity other than the multimedia device, for example, from an anomaly detector.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

obtaining, by a multimedia device comprising a processor, protected content that originates in a first digital rights management system, wherein the protected content has an associated limited exercisable right; and

obtaining an extension of the limited exercisable right based on a condition being satisfied, wherein the extension is received from an anomaly detector coupled to the first digital rights management system and to the second digital rights management system, and wherein the anomaly detector is adapted to detect an anomaly in the protected content based on a hash of the protected content.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the condition comprises the multimedia device being located in a second digital rights management system.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

translating information indicative of the limited exercisable right to a corresponding limited exercisable right for the second digital rights management system.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

adjusting a counter value based on a determination that a right associated with the limited exercisable right has been exercised, and wherein the condition comprises a counter value having a defined value.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the hash is transmitted by the multimedia device.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

appending an identifier of the multimedia device to the hash before transmitting the hash.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the extension of the limited exercisable right is based on a predefined arrangement between the first digital rights management system and the second digital rights management system.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

associating the extension with the protected content.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

obtaining a remaining exercisable right remaining after exercise of at least a portion of the limited exercisable right.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

associating the remaining exercisable right with the protected content.

11. A computer-readable storage medium storing computer-executable instructions that, in response to execution, cause a device comprising a processor to perform operations, comprising:

obtaining protected content that originates in a first digital rights management system, wherein the protected content has an associated limited exercisable right; and

obtaining an extension of the limited exercisable right based on a condition being satisfied, wherein the extension is received from an anomaly detector coupled to the first digital rights management system and to the second digital rights management system, and wherein the anomaly detector is adapted to detect an anomaly in the protected content based on a hash of the protected content.

12. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11, wherein the condition comprises the multimedia device being located in a second digital rights management system.

13. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the operations further comprise:

translating information indicative of the limited exercisable right to a corresponding limited exercisable right for the second digital rights management system.

14. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11, wherein the operations further comprise:

adjusting a counter value based on a determination that a right associated with the limited exercisable right has been exercised, and wherein the condition comprises a counter value having a defined value.

15. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11, wherein the hash is transmitted by the device.

16. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11, wherein the operations further comprise:

appending an identifier of the multimedia device to the hash before transmitting the hash.

17. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11, wherein the extension of the limited exercisable right is based on a predefined arrangement between the first digital rights management system and the second digital rights management system.

18. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11, wherein the operations further comprise:

associating the extension with the protected content.

19. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11, wherein the operations further comprise:

obtaining a remaining exercisable right remaining after exercise of at least a portion of the limited exercisable right.

20. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 19, wherein the operations further comprise:

associating the remaining exercisable right with the protected content.

21. An apparatus, comprising:

a memory storing computer executable components; and

a processor configured to execute the following computer executable components stored in the memory;

a first component that obtains protected content that originates in a first digital rights management system, wherein the protected content has an associated limited exercisable right; and

a second component that obtains an extension of the limited exercisable right based on a condition being satisfied, wherein the extension is received from an anomaly detector coupled to the first digital rights management system and to the second digital rights management system, and wherein the anomaly detector is adapted to detect an anomaly in the protected content based on a hash of the protected content.

22. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the condition comprises the multimedia device being located in a second digital rights management system.

23. The apparatus of claim 22, further comprising:

a third component that translates information indicative of the limited exercisable right to a corresponding limited exercisable right for the second digital rights management system.

24. The apparatus of claim 21, further comprising:

a fourth component that adjusts a counter value based on a determination that a right associated with the limited exercisable right has been exercised, and wherein the condition comprises a counter value having a defined value.

25. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the hash is transmitted by the device.

26. The apparatus of claim 21, further comprising:

a fifth component that appends an identifier of the multimedia device to the hash before transmitting the hash.

27. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the extension of the limited exercisable right is based on a predefined arrangement between the first digital rights management system and the second digital rights management system.
