Abstract

Described herein are improved configurations for wireless energy transfer. System elements of a wireless energy transfer system may pair in-band and out-of-band communication channels by exchanging related information. Energy transfer signals may be modulated according to defined waveforms. Waveform characteristics may be transmitted using an out-of-band communication channel. A system element that receives both the waveform and the waveform characteristics may verify that they correspond to the same system element by verifying that the waveform matches the waveform characteristics.

Claims

1. A method for in-band communication in a wireless energy transfer system comprising a source and a receiving device, the method comprising:

receiving an energy transfer signal from the source;

identifying characteristics of the modulations on the energy transfer signal;

determining a coupling factor between the source and the device based on the characteristics;

determining modulation levels for transmitting in-band communication based on the determined coupling factor; and

modulating an impedance of the device according to the modulation levels.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the impedance of the device is modulated at least two levels.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the modulation levels are increased for low coupling factors.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the modulation levels are decreased for high coupling factors.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the modulations on the energy transfer signal are detected at the device by measuring changes in current.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the modulations on the energy transfer signal are detected at the device by measuring changes in voltage.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the modulations on the energy transfer signal are detected at the device by measuring changes in power.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising modulating the impedance of the device according to the modulation levels by selectively coupling one or more circuit elements to a resonator of the device.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the one or more circuit elements comprise at least one of resistors, capacitors, and inductors.

10. A device with an in-band communication channel in a wireless energy transfer system, the device comprising:

a device resonator for receiving energy from a source;

a sensing circuit configured to detect modulations on the device resonator, to identify characteristics of the modulations, and to determine a coupling factor between the source and the device; and

a modulating circuit configured to modulate an impedance of the device resonator, wherein a magnitude of the impedance modulation is based on the determined coupling factor.

11. The device of claim 10, wherein the modulating circuit is configured to modulate the impedance of the device resonator at least two levels.

12. The device of claim 11, wherein the modulating circuit is configured to increase the modulation levels for low coupling factors.

13. The device of claim 11, wherein the modulating circuit is configured to decrease the modulation levels for high coupling factors.

14. The device of claim 10, wherein the modulations on the device resonator are detected at the device by measuring changes in current.

15. The device of claim 10, wherein the modulations on the device resonator are detected at the device by measuring changes in voltage.

16. The device of claim 10, wherein the modulations on the device resonator are detected at the device by measuring changes in power.

17. The device of claim 10, wherein the modulating circuit comprises a bank of capacitors configured to be selectively connected to the device resonator.

18. The device of claim 10, wherein the modulating circuit comprises variable capacitors.

19. A wireless power transfer system, the system comprising:

a power source comprising a source resonator, wherein the power source is configured to transfer power wirelessly; and

a device configured to receive power from the power source, and comprising;

a device resonator configured to couple at a resonant frequency to the source resonator during power transfer;

a sensing circuit configured to determine a coupling factor between the source resonator and the device resonator; and

a modulating circuit configured to modulate an impedance of the device resonator based on a value of the coupling factor to transmit information to the power source,

wherein the power source is configured to detect the modulated impedance of the device resonator at the resonant frequency to receive the information from the device resonator.
