Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention include systems and methods that relate to pulse oximetry. Specifically, one embodiment includes an oximeter sensor comprising a light emitting element configured to emit light, a light detector configured to detect the light, and a memory chip having a built-in trimmed resistor, the trimmed resistor having a resistance value that is detectable by a monitor.

Claims

1. A device wearable by a patient, comprising:

an adhesive layer configured to couple at least a portion of the device to the patient;

a sensor configured to collect sensor data from the patient;

a processor configured to evaluate the sensor data and to generate physiological data based in least in part on the sensor data;

at least one memory configured to store the physiological data, the physiological data comprising at least data representative of a physiological waveform; and

an interface configured to transmit at least some of the physiological data to a remote device, wherein the device is configured to operate independently from the remote device.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one memory is further configured to store one or more patient specific alarm limits, and the processor is configured to determine whether the generated physiological data exceeds the one or more patient specific alarm limits.

3. The device of claim 2, wherein the device is configured to receive one or more patient specific alarm limits from the remote device.

4. The device of claim 2, wherein at least a portion of the physiological data is stored in the memory based at least in part on whether the generated physiological data exceeds the one or more patient specific alarm limits.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the sensor comprises at least two electrodes configured to generate an impedance signal indicative of contact between the sensor and the patient'"'"'s tissue.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the sensor comprises at least one pulse oximeter sensor configured to generate a signal indicative of an oxygen saturation measurement.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the physiological waveform comprises an electrocardiogram (ECG) waveform.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the physiological waveform comprises a photoplethysmogram (PPG) waveform.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein the physiological data further comprise one or more of data indicative of heart rate, data indicative of motion, one or more patient specific alarm limits, at least one indication of one or more physiological events, or any combination thereof

10. The device of claim 1, wherein the memory is further configured to store an indication of a sensor disconnect.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein the memory is further configured to store a patient identification.

12. The device of claim 1, wherein the memory is further configured to store an indication of elapsed time of sensor usage.

13. The device of claim 1, wherein the memory is further configured to store an indication of temperature.

14. The device of claim 1, further comprising a display.

15. The device of claim 1 wherein the physiological data comprise at least one numerical representation of a physiological parameter.

16. The device of claim 1, wherein the interface is configured to transmit at least some of the physiological data to the remote device essentially real-time.

17. The device of claim 1, wherein the interface is configured to transmit at least some of the physiological data to the remote device after a time delay.

18. The device of claim 1, wherein the interface is configured to transmit at least some of the physiological data to the remote device essentially continuously.

19. The device of claim 1, wherein the interface is configured to transmit at least some of the physiological data to the remote device intermittently.

20. The device of claim 1, wherein the memory element is further configured to store an indication of sensor usage.

21. The device of claim 1, wherein the interface is configured to transmit at least some of the physiological data to the remote device in response to an indication that the sensor is electrically disconnected from the memory.

22. The device of claim 1, wherein the interface is configured to transmit at least some of the physiological data to the remote device in response to an indication that the sensor is at least partially detached from the patient.

23. The device of claim 1, wherein the interface is configured to transmit at least some of the physiological data to the remote device upon receipt of an instruction to transmit from the processor.

24. The device of claim 1, wherein the interface is further configured to transmit at least some of physiological data stored over a specified monitoring time to the remote device.

25. The device of claim 1, wherein the memory is further configured to store a highest and a lowest value of at least some of the physiological data

26. The device of claim 1, further comprising an accelerometer configured to collect data indicative of a presence of patient motion.

27. The device of claim 1, further comprising a data compressor configured to compress at least some of the physiological data.

28. The device of claim 27, wherein the data compressor is configured to compress the at least some of the physiological data according to a time based compression scheme.
