Abstract

A clothes dryer includes a cavity adapted to receive at least one item of clothing, at least one RF feed which feeds RF energy into the cavity, and a spectral imaging module adapted to provide a spectral image comprising input efficiency to the cavity as a function of frequency. A controller controls one or more characteristics of the RF energy to heat a liquid within and/or on fibers of the at least one item of clothing, in which the controller reduces amounts of energy directed to problem areas in the spectral image.

Claims

1. A clothes dryer, comprising:

a cavity adapted to receive at least one item of clothing;

at least one RF feed which feeds RF energy into the cavity;

a spectral imaging module adapted to provide a spectral image comprising input efficiency to the cavity as a function of frequency; and

a controller that controls one or more characteristics of the RF energy to heat a liquid within and/or on fibers of the at least one item of clothing, wherein the controller reduces amounts of energy directed to problem areas in the spectral image.

2. A clothes dryer according to claim 1, wherein

the controller is configured to operate the at least one RF feed so that the RF energy is not concentrated on non-fabric objects associated with the at least one item of clothing.

A clothes dryer according to claim 1, wherein the cavity further comprises a passive source and wherein the cavity is adapted to receive the at least one item of clothing in proximity of the passive source, and the controller controls the RF energy so that the passive source is heated and transmits heat to the at least one item of clothing in proximity thereto.

4. A clothes dryer according to claim 3, wherein the controller selects RF frequencies from among a first set of frequencies which heat the passive source and a second set of frequencies which do not heat the passive source.

5. A clothes drier according to claim 1, further comprising a label reader adapted to read machine-readable drying instructions and set the controller according to the instructions.

6. A clothes drier according to claim 1, further comprising an agitator adapted to move the at least one item of clothing within the cavity.

7. A clothes drier according to claim 6, wherein the spectral imaging module is configured to provide the spectral image when the agitator moves the at least one item of clothing within the cavity.

8. A method of drying at least one item of clothing in a microwave cavity adapted to receive the at least one item of clothing, the method comprising:

feeding RF energy into the microwave cavity;

obtaining a spectral a spectral image comprising input efficiency to the cavity as a function of frequency; and

controlling one or more characteristics of the RF energy to heat a liquid within and/or on fibers of the at least one item of clothing, wherein

the controlling comprises reducing an amount of energy directed to problem areas in the spectral image.

9. A method according to claim 8, wherein:

the controlling one or more characteristics of the RF energy comprises impeding concentration of the RF energy on non-fabric objects associated with the at least one item of clothing.

A method according to claim 8, wherein the cavity comprises a passive source and is adapted to receive the at least one item of clothing in proximity of the passive source, and the controlling one or more characteristics of the RF energy comprises controlling so that the passive source is heated and transmitting heat to the at least one item of clothing in proximity thereto.

11. A method according to claim 10, further comprising selecting RF frequencies from among a first set of frequencies which heat the passive source and a second set of frequencies which do not heat the passive source.

12. A method according to claim 8, further comprising reading from a machine-readable element drying instructions and setting the controller according to the instructions.

13. A method according to claim 8, further comprising moving the at least one item of clothing within the cavity during the feeding of the RF energy to the cavity.

14. A method according to claim 13, wherein the spectral image is obtained when the at least one item of clothing moves within the cavity.
