Abstract

A lightweight and extensible information model for machine-to-machine systems is disclosed. A service layer information management architecture uses three categories of atomic objects, subjects, actions, and descriptions. Information for use within the model is built using the atomic information objects. Application programming interfaces are used to perform operations and information processing by different nodes. Common service functions are used in the model as instances of a generic common service information model.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

generating, at a first entity in a network of connected entities, a request to perform an action, the request comprising;

a source subject of a first subject information object type, wherein the first subject information object type is selected from a predetermined set of subject information object types,

the action of a first action information object type, wherein the first action information object type is selected from a predetermined set of action information object types, and

a target subject of a second subject information object type, wherein the second subject information object type is selected from the predetermined set of subject information object types; and

transmitting the request from the first entity to a second entity, wherein the request causes the second entity to perform the action based on the source subject and the target subject.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving a response from the second entity indicating a result of performing the action.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising detecting a condition and, in response, generating an information object instance.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the request further comprises a description of a first description information object type, and wherein the description is associated with one of the source subject, the action, or the target subject.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising generating a subject information object instance of the first subject information object type.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising generating an action information object instance of the first action information object type.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising generating a description information object instance of a first description information object type, wherein the description information object instance is associated with one of the source subject, the action, or the target subject.

8. An entity in a network of connected entities, the entity comprising:

a memory comprising instructions; and

a processor that, when executing the instructions, effectuates operations comprising;

generating a request to perform an action, the request comprising;

a source subject of a first subject information object type, wherein the first subject information object type is selected from a predetermined set of subject information object types,

the action of a first action information object type, wherein the first action information object type is selected from a predetermined set of action information object types, and

a target subject of a second subject information object type, wherein the second subject information object type is selected from the predetermined set of subject information object types; and

transmitting the request to a second entity, wherein the request causes the second entity to perform the action based on the source subject and the target subject.

9. The entity of claim 8, wherein the operations further comprise receiving a response from the second entity indicating a result of performing the action.

10. The entity of claim 8, wherein the operations further comprise detecting a condition and, in response, generating an information object instance.

11. The entity of claim 8, wherein the request further comprises a description of a first description information object type, wherein the description is associated with one of the source subject, the action, or the target subject.

12. The entity of claim 8, wherein the operations further comprise generating a subject information object instance of the first subject information object type.

13. The entity of claim 8, wherein the operations further comprise generating an action information object instance of the first action information object type.

14. The entity of claim 8, wherein the operations further comprise generating a description information object instance of a first description information object type, wherein the description information object instance is associated with one of the source subject, the action, or the target subject.

15. An entity in a network of connected entities, the entity comprising:

a memory comprising instructions; and

a processor that, when executing the instructions, effectuates operations comprising;

receiving a request to perform an action, the request comprising;

a source subject of a first subject information object type, wherein the first subject information object type is selected from a predetermined set of subject information object types,

the action of a first action information object type, wherein the first action information object type is selected from a predetermined set of action information object types, and

a target subject of a second subject information object type, wherein the second subject information object type is selected from the predetermined set of subject information object types;

in response to receiving the request, generating an information object instance; and

transmitting a response to a second entity indicating that the information object instance has been generated.

16. The entity of claim 15, wherein the operations further comprise detecting a condition and, in response, generating a second information object instance.

17. The entity of claim 15, wherein the request further comprises a description of a first description information object type, wherein the description is associated with one of the source subject, the action, or the target subject.

18. The entity of claim 15, wherein the information object instance is a subject information object instance of the first subject information object type.

19. The entity of claim 15, wherein the information object instance is an action information object instance of the first action information object type.

20. The entity of claim 15, wherein the operations further comprise generating a description information object instance of a first description information object type, wherein the description information object instance is associated with one of the source subject, the action, or the target subject.
