Abstract

A variety of methods and compositions are disclosed, including, in one embodiment, a method of cementing in a subterranean formation, comprising: providing a set-delayed cement composition comprising water, pumice, hydrated lime, and a set retarder; activating the set-delayed cement composition; introducing the set-delayed cement composition into a subterranean formation; and allowing the set-delayed cement composition to set in the subterranean formation.

Claims

1. A set-delayed cement composition comprising

water;

pumice;

hydrated lime; and

a set retarder,

wherein the set-delayed cement composition will remain in a pumpable fluid state for a time period of at least about 1 day.

2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the pumice has a mean particle size in a range of about 1 micron to about 200 microns.

3. The composition of claim 1 wherein the pumice and the hydrated lime are present in a weight ratio of pumice to hydrated lime of about 10:

The composition of claim 1 wherein the set retarder comprises at least one retarder selected from the group consisting of a phosphonic acid, a phosphonic acid derivative, a lignosulfonate, a salt, an organic acid, a carboxymethylated hydroxyethylated cellulose, a synthetic co- or ter-polymer comprising sulfonate and carboxylic acid groups, a borate compound, and any mixture thereof.

5. The composition of claim 1 wherein the set-delayed cement composition further comprises a dispersant.

6. The composition of claim 5 wherein the dispersant comprises at least one dispersant selected from the group consisting of a sulfonated-formaldehyde-based dispersant, a polycarboxylated ether dispersant, and any combination thereof.

7. The composition of claim 1 wherein the set retarder comprises a phosphonic acid derivative, and wherein the set-delayed cement composition further comprises a polycarboxylated ether dispersant.

8. The composition of claim 7 wherein the set-delayed cement composition has a pumice-to-hydrated-lime weight ratio of about 3:

1 to about 5;

1, wherein the set retarder is present in an amount of about 0.01% to about 2% by weight of the pumice, and wherein the polycarboxylated ether dispersant is present in an amount of about 0.01% to about 2% by weight of the pumice.

The composition of claim 1 wherein the set-delayed cement composition further comprises at least one additive selected from the group consisting of a weighting agent, a lightweight additive, a gas-generating additive, a mechanical-property-enhancing additive, a lost-circulation material, a filtration-control additive, a fluid-loss-control additive, a defoaming agent, a foaming agent, a thixotropic additive, and any combination thereof.

10. The set-delayed cement composition of claim 1, wherein the set-delayed cement composition will remain in a pumpable fluid state for a time period of at least about 7 days.

11. A set-delayed cement composition comprising

water;

pumice;

hydrated lime in an amount of about 10% to about 50% by weight of the pumice;

dispersant in an amount of about 0.01% to about 5% by weight of the pumice; and

a set retarder in an amount of about 0.01% to about 10% by weight of the pumice,

wherein the set-delayed cement composition will remain in a pumpable fluid state for a time period of at least about 1 day.

12. The composition of claim 11 wherein the pumice has a mean particle size in a range of about 1 micron to about 200 microns.

13. The composition of claim 11 wherein the pumice and the hydrated lime are present in a weight ratio of pumice to hydrated lime of about 10:

The composition of claim 11 wherein the set retarder comprises at least one retarder selected from the group consisting of a phosphonic acid, a phosphonic acid derivative, a lignosulfonate, a salt, an organic acid, a carboxymethylated hydroxyethylated cellulose, a synthetic co- or ter-polymer comprising sulfonate and carboxylic acid groups, a borate compound, and any mixture thereof.

15. The composition of claim 11 wherein the dispersant comprises at least one dispersant selected from the group consisting of a sulfonated-formaldehyde-based dispersant, a polycarboxylated ether dispersant, and any combination thereof.

16. The composition of claim 11 wherein the set retarder comprises a phosphonic acid derivative, and wherein the set-delayed cement composition further comprises a polycarboxylated ether dispersant.

17. The composition of claim 11 wherein the set-delayed cement composition has a pumice-to-hydrated-lime weight ratio of about 3:

1 to about 5;

1, wherein the set retarder is present in an amount of about 0.01% to about 2% by weight of the pumice, and wherein the polycarboxylated ether dispersant is present in an amount of about 0.01% to about 2% by weight of the pumice.

The composition of claim 11 wherein the set-delayed cement composition further comprises at least one additive selected from the group consisting of a weighting agent, a lightweight additive, a gas-generating additive, a mechanical-property-enhancing additive, a lost-circulation material, a filtration-control additive, a fluid-loss-control additive, a defoaming agent, a foaming agent, a thixotropic additive, and any combination thereof.

19. A set-delayed cement composition comprising

water;

pumice;

hydrated lime;

a polycarboxylated ether dispersant; and

a phosphonic acid derivative set retarder,

wherein the set-delayed cement composition will remain in a pumpable fluid state for a time period of at least about 7 days.

20. The composition of claim 19 wherein the pumice has a mean particle size in a range of about 1 micron to about 200 microns.
