Abstract

A non-invasive, optical-based physiological monitoring system is disclosed. In an embodiment, the non-invasive, optical-based physiological monitoring system comprises an emitter configured to emit light into a tissue site of a living patient; a detector configured to detect the emitted light after attenuation by the tissue site and output a sensor signal responsive to the detected light; and a processor configured determine, based on the sensor signal, a first physiological parameter indicative of a level of pain of the patient.

Claims

1. A non-invasive optical physiological monitoring system comprising:

an emitter configured to emit light into a tissue site of a living patient;

a detector configured to detect the emitted light after attenuation by the tissue site and output a sensor signal responsive to the detected light; and

a processor configured determine, based on the sensor signal, a first physiological parameter indicative of a level of pain of the patient.

2. The non-invasive optical physiological monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the first physiological parameter comprises a perfusion index.

3. The non-invasive optical physiological monitoring system of claim 2 further comprising:

a bio-potential sensor attached to the patient and configured to output a bio-potential signal,

wherein the processor is further configured to determine, based on the bio-potential signal, a second physiological parameter indicative of the level of pain of the patient.

4. The non-invasive optical physiological monitoring system of claim 3, wherein the second physiological parameter comprises an ECG.

5. The non-invasive optical physiological monitoring system of claim 4, wherein the processor is further configured to determine, based on the physiological parameter and the second physiological parameter, a combined indication of the level of pain of the patient.

6. The non-invasive optical physiological monitoring system of claim 5 further comprising:

a second bio-potential sensor attached to the patient and configured to output a second bio-potential signal,

wherein the processor is further configured to determine, based on the second bio-potential signal, a third physiological parameter indicative of a depth of consciousness of the patient.

7. The non-invasive optical physiological monitoring system of claim 6, wherein the third physiological parameter comprises an EEG.

8. The non-invasive optical physiological monitoring system of claim 7, wherein the processor is further configured to determine, based on the first, second, and third physiological parameters, a combined index related to both the level of pain and the depth of consciousness of the patient.

9. The non-invasive optical physiological monitoring system of claim 8 further comprising:

a plurality of other sensors attached to the patient and configured to output a plurality of other signals,

wherein the processor is further configured to determine a plurality of other physiological parameters including a respiration rate, a respiratory air flow, a heart rate, and a blood pressure,

wherein the plurality of other physiological parameters are determined based on at least one of the plurality of other signals, the sensor signal, the bio-potential signal, or the second bio-potential signal.

The non-invasive optical physiological monitoring system of claim 9, wherein the processor is further configured to determine, based on the first, second, third, and plurality of other physiological parameters, the combined index related to both the level of pain and the depth of consciousness of the patient.

11. The non-invasive optical physiological monitoring system of claim 10, wherein the plurality of other sensors, the optical sensor, the bio-potential sensor, and the second bio-potential sensor are in communication with the monitor via a single cable.
