1. An electronic device that operates by drawing power from an AC (alternating current) power source during normal operation, and from a second power source separate from the AC power source during idle operation, comprising:

  • a power supply having an input for receiving power from the AC power source, the received power being available to the electronic device for use during said normal operation;

    a switch electrically connected between the power supply and the AC power source;

    one or more monitoring circuitries associated with the electronic device for monitoring user-associated events; and

    a controller communicatively coupled to the switch and the one or more monitoring circuitries;

    wherein the controller is operative to control the electronic device to enter a power saving mode by activating the switch to electrically disconnect the power supply from the AC power source during periods of device inactivity, the electronic device drawing power from the second power source for providing power to the controller and the one or more monitoring circuitries while engaged in said power saving mode such that no power is drawn by the electronic device from the AC power source while the electronic device is engaged in said power saving mode.
