Abstract

A system comprising a biometric monitoring device including a housing including a platform to receive at least one foot of the user, a body weight sensor to generate body weight data, processing circuitry to calculate user weight data which corresponds to the user'"'"'s weight, using the body weight data, and communication circuitry to: (a) receive user identification data which identifies the user or a portable activity monitoring device, and (b) transmit the user weight data to data storage associated with the user identification data. The system further includes the portable activity monitoring device including a housing having a physical size and shape that is adapted to couple to the user'"'"'s body, a sensor to generate sensor data, and communication circuitry to receive physiologic data which is based on the user weight data, and processing circuitry to calculate activity data using the sensor data and physiologic data.

Claims

1. A biometric monitoring system to measure a weight of a user, the biometric monitoring system comprising:

a first housing configured to be placed on a flat horizontal surface and including a platform configured to receive at least one foot of the user and capable of supporting the body weight of the user;

a body weight sensor, mechanically coupled to the platform, and configured to generate body weight data that is representative of the weight of the user and output the body weight data to processing circuitry;

a first physiological sensor configured to provide data other than body weight data; and

the processing circuitry, the processing circuitry communicatively coupled to the body weight sensor, communicatively coupled to the first physiological sensor, and configured to calculate user weight data that corresponds to the weight of the user using the body weight data

2. The biometric monitoring system of claim 1, further comprising a second housing separate from the first housing, wherein the second housing includes the first physiological sensor.

3. The biometric monitoring system of claim 1, further comprising a second housing separate from the first housing, wherein:

the first housing further includes first communication circuitry;

the second housing includes a display and second communication circuitry communicatively coupled with one another;

the first communication circuitry and the second communication circuitry are communicatively coupled;

the processing circuitry is configured to;

output the user weight data to the first communication circuitry,

output the physiological quantity to the first communication circuitry, and

cause the display to present content selected from the group consisting of;

the user weight data, the physiological quantity, and the user weight data and the physiological quantity.

4. The biometric monitoring system of claim 1, further comprising a second physiological sensor in addition to the first physiological sensor and the body weight sensor.

5. The biometric monitoring system of claim 4, further comprising a third housing separate from the first and second housings, wherein the third housing includes the second physiological sensor.

6. The biometric monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the processing circuitry is configured to calculate a physiological quantity of the user.

7. The biometric monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the first physiological sensor includes a heart rate sensor configured to detect the heart rate of the user and output heart rate data to the processing circuitry.

8. The biometric monitoring system of claim 7, wherein the first physiological sensor comprises one or more sensors configured to detect expansion and contraction of the user'"'"'s blood vessels and the processing circuitry determines the heart rate of the user using ballistocardiography.

9. The biometric monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the first physiological sensor comprises one or more light-emitting diode (LED)/photodetector pairs.

10. The biometric monitoring system of claim 9, wherein:

the one or more LED/photodetector pairs are configured to;

illuminate a part of the user'"'"'s foot that is on the platform using the LED,

measure an amount of light, using the photodetector, from the illumination that is reflected back into the photodetector by the foot, and

output light reflection data indicative of the measured amount of light to the processing circuitry; and

the processing circuitry is configured to calculate a physiological quantity of the user using the light reflection data.

11. The biometric monitoring system of claim 10, wherein the physiological quantity is selected from the group consisting of:

heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, arterial stiffness, and foot size.

12. The biometric monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the first physiological sensor comprises a photoplethysmographic sensor.

13. The biometric monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the first physiological sensor comprises one or more cameras.

14. The biometric monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the first physiological sensor comprises an electrocardiographic sensor.

15. The biometric monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the first physiological sensor comprises a photodiode.

16. The biometric monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the first physiological sensor comprises multiple bioelectrical impedance analysis electrodes.

17. The biometric monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the first physiological sensor is selected from the group consisting of:

discrete metal probes, indium-tin-oxide coatings on a substrate, and a capacitive array.

18. The biometric monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the processing circuitry is configured to permit the user to disable the physiological sensor.

19. The biometric monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the processing circuitry is configured to identify the user and to disable the first physiological sensor based on the identity of the user.

20. The biometric monitoring system of claim 6, further comprising communication circuitry, the communication circuitry configured to transmit the user weight data or the physiological quantity to an external device.
