Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for monitoring a subject, and particularly, for inferring an underlying brain state present in absence of current conditions. In some aspects, a method for monitoring the subject is provided including steps of receiving physiological feedback from at least one sensor configured to acquire physiological information from locations associated with a subject'"'"'s brain, assembling a set of time-series data using the received physiological feedback, and identifying portions of the set of time-series data that indicate a burst suppression state. The method also includes identifying a burst characteristic profile associated with a burst pattern determined from the identified portions, and comparing the burst characteristic against a reference set of burst profiles. The method further includes determining, based on the comparison, a likelihood of a brain state of the subject underlying the burst suppression state, and generating a report indicative of the likelihood of the determined brain state.

Claims

1. A system for monitoring a subject, the system comprising:

an input configured to receive physiological feedback from locations associated with a subject'"'"'s brain;

a processor configured to;

i) receive the physiological feedback from the input;

ii) assemble a set of time-series data using the received physiological feedback;

iii) identify portions of the set of time-series data that indicate a burst suppression activity;

iv) identify, using the portions identified in (iii), locations about the subject'"'"'s brain exhibiting a burst suppression state to determine a spatial distribution of the burst suppression activity;

v) determine, using the spatial distribution, a current and/or a future state of the brain of the patient; and

a display configured to indicate the current and/or the future state of the brain of the subject.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to apply a segmentation algorithm to identify the portions of the set of time-series data.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to determine a burst timing pattern using burst timing information obtained from locations exhibiting the burst suppression activity.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured determine a burst spectral content using the received physiological feedback.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein the processor is further configured to compare the determined burst spectral content against a reference set of burst profiles.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the reference set of burst profiles is related to a non-burst suppression state.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to provide an indication in relation to the current brain state of the subject upon recovery from the burst suppression state.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to determine a likelihood of the current brain state underlying a burst suppression pattern.

9. The system of claim 1, further comprising a controller for controlling the brain state of the subject using the determined current and/or future state.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein display is further configured to indicate a burst cluster illustrative of a concurrent burst activity for locations associated with a subject'"'"'s brain.

11. A system for monitoring a subject, the system comprising:

an input configured to receive physiological feedback from locations associated with a subject'"'"'s brain;

a processor configured to;

i) receive the physiological feedback from the input;

ii) assemble a set of time-series data using the received physiological feedback;

iii) identify portions of the set of time-series data that indicate a burst suppression state;

iv) identify a burst characteristic profile associated with a burst pattern determined from the portions identified in (iii);

v) compare the burst characteristic against a reference set of burst profiles;

vi) determine, based on the comparison of (v), a likelihood of a brain state of the subject underlying the burst suppression state;

a display configured to indicate the likelihood of the brain state determined in (vi).

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the processor is further configured to apply a segmentation algorithm to identify the portions of the set of time-series data.

13. The system of claim 11, wherein the burst characteristic profile includes a burst spectral content.

14. The system of claim 11, wherein the processor is further configured to determine a burst timing pattern and/or a spatial pattern using burst information obtained from locations exhibiting a burst suppression activity.

15. The system of claim 11, wherein the reference set of burst profiles is related to a non-burst suppression state.

16. The system of claim 11, wherein the processor is further configured to provide an indication in relation to a future brain state of the subject upon recovery from the burst suppression state.

17. The system of claim 11, further comprising a controller for controlling a future brain state of the subject using the determined brain state.

18. The system of claim 11, wherein display is further configured to indicate a burst cluster illustrative of a concurrent burst activity for locations associated with a subject'"'"'s brain.

19. A method for monitoring a subject comprising steps of:

(a) receiving physiological feedback from at least one sensor configured to acquire physiological information from locations associated with a subject'"'"'s brain;

(b) assembling a set of time-series data using the received physiological feedback;

(c) identifying portions of the set of time-series data that indicate a burst suppression activity;

(d) identifying, using the portions identified in step (c), locations about the subject'"'"'s brain exhibiting a burst suppression state to determine a spatial pattern of the burst suppression activity;

(e) determining, using the spatial pattern, a current and/or a future state of the brain of the patient; and

(f) generating a report indicating the current and/or future state determined in step (e).

20. The method of claim 19, the method further comprising applying a segmentation algorithm to identify the portions of the set of time-series data.

21. The method of claim 19, the method further comprising determining a burst timing pattern using burst timing information obtained from locations exhibiting the burst suppression activity.

22. The method of claim 19, the method further comprising determining a burst spectral content using the received physiological feedback.

23. The method of claim 22, the method further comprising comparing the determined burst spectral content against a reference set of burst profiles.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the reference set of burst profiles is related to a non-burst suppression state.

25. The method of claim 19, the method further comprising providing an indication in relation to the current brain state of the subject upon recovery from the burst suppression state.

26. The method of claim 19, the method further comprising determining a likelihood of the current brain state underlying a burst suppression pattern.

27. The method of claim 19, the method further comprising indicating a burst cluster illustrative of a concurrent burst activity for locations associated with a subject'"'"'s brain.

28. The method of claim 19, the method further comprising controlling the brain state of the subject using the determined current and/or future state.

29. A method for monitoring a subject comprising steps of:

(a) receiving physiological feedback from at least one sensor configured to acquire physiological information from locations associated with a subject'"'"'s brain;

(b) assembling a set of time-series data using the received physiological feedback;

(c) identifying portions of the set of time-series data that indicate a burst suppression state;

(d) identifying a burst characteristic profile associated with a burst pattern determined from the portions identified at step (d);

(e) comparing the burst characteristic against a reference set of burst profiles;

(f) determining, based on the comparison of step (e), a likelihood of a brain state of the subject underlying the burst suppression state;

(g) generating a report indicative of the likelihood of the brain state determined in step (f).

30. The method of claim 29, the method further comprising applying a segmentation algorithm to identify the portions of the set of time-series data.

31. The method of claim 29, wherein the burst characteristic profile includes a burst spectral content.

32. The method of claim 29, the method further comprising determining a burst timing pattern and/or a spatial pattern using burst information obtained from locations exhibiting a burst suppression activity.

33. The method of claim 29, wherein the reference set of burst profiles is related to a non-burst suppression state.

34. The method of claim 29, the method further comprising providing an indication in relation to a future state of the subject upon recovery from the burst suppression state.

35. The method of claim 29, the method further comprising indicating a burst cluster illustrative of a concurrent burst activity for locations associated with a subject'"'"'s brain.

36. The method of claim 29, the method further comprising controlling a future brain state of the subject using the determined brain state.
