Abstract

A wireless media player and a related system and methodology are disclosed. One aspect of the wireless media player system pertains to a virtual connector system, apparatus, and method for the automatic establishment of wireless connectivity with other electronic devices. In one embodiment, the media player device employs the use of integrated Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to exchange communication settings, media capability, and other parameters with an external device that also has integrated RFID technology. The automatic exchange of settings and other information via a proximity-based RFID data exchange allows a media player to quickly establish a secure communication link with another device via a commonly supported wireless protocol such as Ultra Wideband (UWB) or Bluetooth. Another aspect of the media player system pertains to a method of using the captured media capability of the connecting device to customize certain menu options and software parameters in the media player.

Claims

1. A communication system, comprising:

a host device, comprising;

a processor to execute one or more software programs stored in a memory; and

a near field communication (NFC) chip, comprising;

a NFC controller having an interface to communicate with the processor of the host device and the one or more software programs executed thereon,

a NFC reader device to receive one or more signals from an external NFC tag device when the external NFC tag device is within a predetermined distance from an antenna coupled to the NFC chip,

a NFC tag device to transmit one or more NFC signals to an external NFC reader device when the external reader device is within a predetermined distance from the antenna,

a radio frequency (RF) interface coupled to the antenna, the NFC reader device, and the NFC tag device, and

a switch device to switch between a tag mode and a reader mode.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the NFC controller controls the NFC chip so as to operate in a card emulator mode.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the NFC controller includes embedded software to be executed by the NFC controller to manage the operation of the NFC chip and the NFC controller'"'"'s interface with the host processor and the one or more software programs executed thereon.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the embedded software of the NFC controller includes software to provide a contactless communication protocol including at least one of ISO 14443, ISO 15693, NFCIP-1, FeliCa, and NFC.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein when the NFC chip is in the reader mode, a read operation can be performed on the external NFC tag device using the contactless communication protocol.

6. The system of claim 4, wherein when the NFC chip operates in a card emulator mode, the NFC chip supports transmission of a card credential to the external NFC reader device using the contactless communication protocol.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein a wallet application executed by the processor of the host device communicates with the NFC chip such that the NFC chip transmits a card credential to the external NFC reader device.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein the wallet application enables payments at an external point-of-sale system by transmitting the card credential stored in a memory device to the external NFC reader device connected to the external point-of-sale system via the NFC chip.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the NFC controller controls the NFC chip so as to operate in a peer-to-peer mode to bidirectionally exchange data between the NFC chip and the external NFC device.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the RF interface modulates and demodulates signals to be respectively transmitted and received by the antenna.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein the RF interface receives, from the NFC reader device, signals to be modulated and transmitted, and the RF interface transmits the demodulated signals to the NFC reader device.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein the RF interface transmits demodulated signals to the NFC tag device and receives signals from the NFC tag device to be modulated and transmitted via the antenna.

13. The system of claim 1, wherein the antenna coupled to the RF interface is external to the NFC chip.

14. The system of claim 1, wherein the RF interface generates RF signals to be provided to the antenna to be transmitted.

15. The system of claim 1, wherein the antenna receives the one or more signals from the external NFC tag device and provides the received one or more signals to the RF interface.

16. The system of claim 1, wherein the NFC controller controls the switch device to switch between the tag mode and the reader mode.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the NFC controller receives a switching signal from the processor of the host device when the one or more software programs operating on the host device requests that the NFC controller switch between the tag mode and the reader mode.

18. The system of claim 16, wherein the NFC reader device or the NFC tag device is coupled to the RF interface according to the mode set by the switch device.

19. The system of claim 1, wherein when the switch device switches to the tag mode and the antenna receives the one or more NFC interrogation signals, the antenna to transmit the one or more NFC response signals that include information that is retrieved from a memory device of the NFC chip.

20. The system of claim 1, wherein the antenna receives the one or more interrogation signals from the external NFC reader device and provides the received one or more interrogation signals to the RF interface.

21. The system of claim 1, wherein when the NFC tag device and the RF interface are communicatively connected according to the switch device, the connection carries signals generated by the NFC tag device to be modulated by the RF interface and to be transmitted by the antenna.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein the signals generated by the NFC tag device and transmitted by the antenna are confirmed according to notifications to the NFC controller and to the processor of the host device and the one or more software programs executed thereon.

23. The system of claim 1, wherein the NFC chip includes a configurable memory device that interfaces with the NFC controller, wherein the configurable memory device is updatable by the processor of the host device and the one or more software programs executed thereon.

24. The system of claim 1, wherein when the NFC reader device is activated according to the switch device, the antenna transmits one or more NFC interrogation signals and receives one or more NFC response signals including information from the external NFC tag device.

25. The system of claim 24, wherein the one or more NFC response signals received by the antenna and provided to the NFC reader device are further provided to the NFC controller.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein the NFC controller provides data from the received one or more NFC response signals to the processor of the host device via the interface, and

wherein the data is provided to the one or more software programs executed by the processor of the host device.

27. The system of claim 1, wherein the NFC chip further comprises:

a clock management device to synchronize operations of the NFC chip.

28. The system of claim 1, wherein the NFC chip further comprises:

a power management device to provide access to a power signal of the host device when the NFC chip is switched by the switch device to the reader mode so that the NFC chip can use a power source of the host device to transmit interrogation signals to a target NFC device that is within a predetermined distance from the antenna coupled to the NFC chip.

29. The system of claim 1, wherein the one or more software programs executed by the processor of the host device customizes interrogation signals by sending one or more messages from the processor of the host device to the external device via the antenna, by way of the NFC chip.

30. The system of claim 1, wherein the NFC chip includes a memory device to store information to be retrieved by the external NFC reader device.

31. The system of claim 30, wherein the memory device is a non-volatile configurable memory.

32. The system of claim 30, wherein the one or more software programs executed by the processor of the host device update the information stored in the memory device by sending data via the host device'"'"'s processor to the NFC controller of the NFC chip.

33. The system of claim 32, wherein the NFC controller provides the data to the memory device of the NFC chip to be stored.

34. The system of claim 30, wherein access to the memory device is determined according to one or more predefined programs of the one or more software programs executed by the processor of the host device.

35. The system of claim 30, wherein the memory device is tamper resistant to prevent an unauthorized user from accessing confidential information from the memory device.

36. The system of claim 30, wherein a message included in a signal received from the external NFC reader device is used to select data stored in the memory device, and the stored data is transmitted to the external NFC reader device in response to the received signal.

37. The system of claim 36, wherein the stored data is capable of being transmitted from the memory device to the external NFC reader device when the host device is without power.

38. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor of the host device executing the one or more software programs controls the operations of the NFC chip and exchanges data with the NFC chip bidirectionally.

39. The system of claim 1, wherein the NFC controller provides one or more notifications to the processor of the host device of successful and unsuccessful data transmission with the external NFC device.

40. The system of claim 39, wherein the one or more notifications are provided to the processor of the host device to allow the host device, which further comprises an audio circuit and a speaker, to emit sound via the speaker according to the one or more notifications.

41. The system of claim 39, wherein the one or more notifications are provided to the processor of the host device to allow the host device, which further comprises a display device, to display a message on the display device according to the one or more notifications.

42. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor of the host device launches at least one of the one or more software programs upon receipt of a message from the external reader device or the external NFC tag device, and provides the received data from the message to the launched one or more software programs.

43. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor of the host device executes one or more operations of the one or more software programs upon receipt of a message from the external NFC reader or the external NFC tag device.

44. A near field communication (NFC) chip, comprising:

a NFC controller having an interface to communicate with a host device and one or more software programs executed thereon;

a NFC reader device to receive one or more signals from an external NFC tag device when the external NFC tag device is within a predetermined distance from an antenna coupled to the NFC chip;

a NFC tag device to transmit one or more NFC signals to an external NFC reader device when the external NFC reader device is within a predetermined distance from the antenna;

a radio frequency (RF) interface coupled to the antenna, the NFC reader device, and the NFC tag device; and

a switch device to switch between a tag mode and a reader mode.

45. The NFC chip of claim 44, wherein the NFC controller controls the NFC chip so as to operate in a card emulator mode.

46. The NFC chip of claim 44, wherein the NFC controller includes embedded software to be executed by the NFC controller to manage the operation of the NFC chip and the NFC controller'"'"'s interface with the host device and the one or more software programs executed thereon.

47. The NFC chip of claim 46, wherein the embedded software of the NFC controller includes software to provide a contactless communication protocol including at least one of ISO 14443, ISO 15693, NFCIP-1, FeliCa, and NFC.

48. The NFC chip of claim 47, wherein when the NFC chip is in the reader mode, a read operation can be performed on an external NFC tag device using the contactless communication protocol.

49. The NFC chip of claim 47, wherein when the NFC chip operates in a card emulator mode, the NFC chip supports the transmission of a card credential to the external NFC reader device using the contactless communication protocol.

50. The NFC chip of claim 49, wherein a wallet application executed by a processor of the host device communicates with the NFC chip such that the NFC chip transmits a card credential to the external NFC reader device.

51. The NFC chip of claim 50, wherein the wallet application enables payments at an external point-of-sale system by transmitting the card credential stored in a memory device to the external NFC reader device connected to the external point-of-sale system via the NFC chip.

52. The NFC chip of claim 44, wherein the NFC controller controls the NFC chip so as to operate in a peer-to-peer mode to bidirectionally exchange data between the NFC chip and the external NFC device.

53. The NFC chip of claim 44, wherein the RF interface modulates and demodulates signals to be respectively transmitted and received by the antenna.

54. The NFC chip of claim 44, wherein the RF interface receives, from the NFC reader device, signals to be modulated and transmitted, and the RF interface transmits the demodulated signals to the NFC reader device.

55. The NFC chip of claim 44, wherein the RF interface transmits demodulated signals to the NFC tag device and receives signals from the NFC tag device to be modulated and transmitted via the antenna.

56. The NFC chip of claim 44, wherein the antenna coupled to the RF interface is external to the NFC chip.

57. The NFC chip of claim 44, wherein the RF interface generates RF signals to be provided to the antenna to be transmitted.

58. The NFC chip of claim 44, wherein the antenna receives the one or more signals from the external NFC tag device and provides the received one or more signals to the RF interface.

59. The NFC chip of claim 44, wherein the NFC controller controls the switch device to switch between the tag mode and the reader mode.

60. The NFC chip of claim 59, wherein the NFC controller receives a switching signal from a processor of the host device when the one or more software programs operating on the host device requests that the NFC controller switch between the tag mode and the reader mode.

61. The NFC chip of claim 59, wherein the NFC reader device or the NFC tag device is coupled to the RF interface according to the mode set by the switch device.

62. The NFC chip of claim 44, wherein when the switch device switches to the tag mode and the antenna receives one or more NFC interrogation signals, the antenna to transmit the one or more NFC response signals that include information that is retrieved from a memory device of the NFC chip.

63. The NFC chip of claim 44, wherein the antenna receives one or more interrogation signals from the external NFC reader device and provides the received one or more interrogation signals to the RF interface.

64. The NFC chip of claim 44, wherein when the NFC tag device and the RF interface are communicatively connected according to the switch device, the connection carries signals generated by the NFC tag device to be modulated by the RF interface and to be transmitted by the antenna.

65. The NFC chip of claim 64, wherein the signals generated by the NFC tag device and transmitted by the antenna are confirmed according to notifications conveyed to the NFC controller and to the host device'"'"'s processor and the one or more software programs executed thereon.

66. The NFC chip of claim 44, wherein the NFC chip includes a configurable memory device that interfaces with the NFC controller, wherein the configurable memory device is updatable by the host device and the one or more software programs executed thereon.

67. The NFC chip of claim 44, wherein when the NFC reader device is activated according to the switch device, the antenna transmits one or more NFC interrogation signals and receives one or more NFC response signals including information from the external NFC tag device.

68. The NFC chip of claim 67, wherein one or more NFC response signals received by the antenna and provided to the NFC reader device are further provided to the NFC controller.

69. The NFC chip of claim 68, wherein the NFC controller provides data from the received one or more NFC response signals to the host device'"'"'s processor, and

wherein the data is provided to the one or more software programs executed by the host device'"'"'s processor.

70. The NFC chip of claim 44, further comprising:

a clock management device to synchronize operations of the NFC chip.

71. The NFC chip of claim 44, further comprising:

a power management device to provide access to a power signal of the host device when the NFC chip is switched by the switch device to the reader mode so that the NFC chip can use a power source on the host device to transmit interrogation signals to a target NFC device that is within a predetermined distance from the antenna coupled to the NFC chip.

72. The NFC chip of claim 44, wherein the NFC chip includes a memory device to store information to be retrieved by the external NFC reader device.

73. The NFC chip of claim 72, wherein the memory device is a non-volatile configurable memory.

74. The NFC chip of claim 72, wherein the information stored in the memory device is updated by the one or more software programs executed on the host device in response to the NFC controller of the NFC chip receiving data from the host device'"'"'s processor.

75. The NFC chip of claim 72, wherein the NFC controller provides the data to the memory device of the NFC chip to be stored.

76. The NFC chip of claim 72, wherein access to the memory device is determined according to one or more predefined programs of the one or more software programs executed by the host device'"'"'s processor.

77. The NFC chip of claim 72, wherein the memory device is tamper resistant to prevent an unauthorized user from accessing confidential information from the memory device.

The NFC chip of claim 72, wherein a message included in an interrogation signal received from the external NFC reader device is used to select data stored in the memory device, and the stored data is transmitted to the external NFC reader device in response to the received interrogation signal.

79. The NFC chip of claim 78, wherein the stored data is capable of being transmitted from the memory device to the external NFC reader device when the host device is without power.

80. The NFC chip of claim 44, wherein one or more operations of the NFC chip are controlled by the host device'"'"'s processor executing the one or more software programs, with data being exchanged bi-directionally.

81. The NFC chip of claim 44, wherein the NFC controller provides one or more notifications to the host device'"'"'s processor of successful and unsuccessful data transmission with the external NFC device.

82. The NFC chip of claim 81, wherein the one or more notifications are provided to the host device'"'"'s processor, which emits sound according to the one or more notifications.

83. The NFC chip of claim 82, wherein the one or more notifications are provided to the host device'"'"'s processor to display a message according to the one or more notifications.

84. A method of communicating between a near field communication (NFC) chip, a host device including an antenna, and an external NFC reader device including an antenna, the method comprising:

generating a NFC interrogation signal with the external NFC reader device;

detecting the NFC interrogation signal generated by the external NFC reader device with the host device'"'"'s antenna and the NFC chip'"'"'s radio frequency (RF) interface when the host device'"'"'s antenna is within a predetermined distance from an RF field emitted from the external NFC reader device'"'"'s antenna;

routing a received message encoded within the interrogation signal from the RF interface to a NFC tag device of the NFC chip; and

retrieving, from a memory device of the NFC chip, data that corresponds to the received message, and routing it to the RF interface and the host device'"'"'s antenna coupled to the NFC chip for transmission to the external NFC reader device via the external NFC reader device'"'"'s antenna.

85. The method of claim 84, further comprising:

managing the operation of a NFC controller of the NFC chip by executing embedded software included in the NFC controller; and

providing, with the embedded software, the NFC controller'"'"'s interface with the host device and one or more software programs executed thereon.

86. The method of claim 85, wherein the embedded software of the NFC controller includes software to provide a contactless communication protocol including at least one of ISO 14443, ISO 15693, NFCIP-1, FeliCa, and NFC.

87. The method of claim 86, further comprising:

performing a read operation on an external NFC tag device via the contactless communication protocol when the NFC chip is in a reader mode.

88. The method of claim 86, further comprising:

transmitting a card credential to the external NFC reader device using the contactless communication protocol between the NFC chip and the external NFC reader device when the NFC chip is operating in a card emulator mode.

89. The method of claim 88, further comprising:

when a wallet application is executed by the processor of the host device, communicating with the NFC chip such that the NFC chip transmits a card credential to the external NFC reader device.

90. The method of claim 89, further comprising:

enabling payments at an external point-of-sale system with the wallet application by transmitting the card credential stored in a memory device of the NFC chip to the external NFC reader device connected to the external point-of-sale system via the NFC chip.

91. The method of claim 84, further comprising:

operating the NFC chip in a peer-to-peer mode; and

exchanging data bidirectionally between the NFC chip and the external NFC reader device.

92. The method of claim 84, further comprising:

modulating and demodulating signals with the RF interface that are respectively transmitted and received by the host device'"'"'s antenna coupled to the NFC chip.

93. The method of claim 84, further comprising:

receiving from the NFC reader device, with the RF interface, signals to be modulated and transmitted; and

transmitting the demodulated signals from the RF interface to the NFC reader device.

94. The method of claim 84, further comprising:

transmitting demodulated signals with the RF interface to the NFC tag device; and

receiving signals from the NFC tag device with the RF interface to be modulated and transmitted via the host device'"'"'s antenna.

95. The method of claim 84, further comprising:

generating, with the RF interface, RF signals to be provided to the host device'"'"'s antenna to be transmitted.

96. The method of claim 84, further comprising:

receiving RF signals with the host device'"'"'s antenna coupled to the NFC chip; and

providing the received RF signals to the RF interface.

97. The method of claim 84, further comprising:

controlling, with a NFC controller of the NFC chip, a switch device to switch the NFC chip between a tag mode and a reader mode.

98. The method of claim 97, further comprising:

receiving, with the NFC controller, a switching signal from the host device'"'"'s processor when one or more software programs executed by the host device'"'"'s processor requests that the NFC controller switch between the tag mode and the reader mode.

99. The method of claim 97, further comprising:

coupling the RF interface to a NFC reader device or the NFC tag device according to the mode set by the switch device.

100. The method of claim 84, further comprising:

when a switch device of the NFC chip switches to a tag mode and the host device'"'"'s antenna coupled to the NFC chip receives the one or more NFC interrogation signals, transmitting one or more NFC response signals that include information that is retrieved from the memory device.

101. The method of claim 84, further comprising:

receiving signals with the host device'"'"'s antenna coupled to the NFC chip;

demodulating the received signal with the RF interface; and

providing the demodulated signals to the NFC tag device of the NFC chip.

102. The method of claim 84, further comprising:

when the NFC tag device and the RF interface are communicatively connected according to a switch device of the NFC chip, providing signals generated by the NFC tag device to be modulated by the RF interface and to be transmitted by the host device'"'"'s antenna coupled to the NFC chip.

103. The method of claim 102, further comprising:

confirming the signals generated by the NFC tag device and transmitted by the host device'"'"'s antenna coupled to the NFC chip according to notifications sent to a NFC controller of the NFC chip and to a processor of the host device and the one or more software programs executed thereon.

104. The method of claim 84, further comprising:

updating the data stored within the memory device of the NFC chip via the host device'"'"'s processor.

105. The method of claim 84, further comprising:

activating the NFC reader device according to a switch device of the NFC chip; and

transmitting one or more NFC interrogation signals and receiving one or more NFC response signals including information from the external NFC tag device.

106. The method of claim 105, further comprising:

providing the signals received by the host device'"'"'s antenna coupled to the NFC chip and provided to the NFC reader device to a NFC controller of the NFC chip.

107. The method of claim 106, further comprising:

providing data, with the NFC controller, from the received signals to the host device'"'"'s processor,

wherein the data is provided to one or more software programs executed by a processor of the host device.

108. The method of claim 84, further comprising:

synchronizing operations of the NFC chip with a clock management device.

109. The method of claim 84, further comprising:

providing, with a power management device, access to a power signal of the host device when the NFC chip is switched by a switch device to a reader mode so that the NFC chip can use a power source in the host device to transmit interrogation signals to a target NFC device that is within a predetermined distance from the antenna coupled to the NFC chip.

110. The method of claim 84, further comprising:

customizing interrogation signals with one or more software programs executed by the host device by sending one or more messages from the host device'"'"'s processor to the external NFC reader device via the host device'"'"'s antenna coupled to the NFC chip.

111. The method of claim 84, further comprising:

storing information in the memory device to be retrieved by the external NFC reader device.

112. The method of claim 111, further comprising:

updating the information stored in the memory device with one or more software programs executed by the host device'"'"'s processor by sending data via the processor of the host device to a NFC controller of the NFC chip.

113. The method of claim 112, further comprising:

providing, with the NFC controller, the data to the memory device to be stored.

114. The method of claim 111, further comprising:

determining access to the memory device according to one or more predefined programs of one or more software programs executed by the processor of the host device.

115. The method of claim 111, further comprising:

in response to the received interrogation signal, selecting data stored in the memory device with the received message included in the interrogation signal, and transmitting the stored data in the memory device to the external NFC reader.

116. The method of claim 115, further comprising:

transmitting the stored data from the memory device to the external NFC reader device when the host device is without power.

117. The method of claim 84, further comprising:

controlling, with a processor of the host device, the operations of the NFC chip and exchanging data with the NFC chip bidirectionally.

118. The method of claim 84, further comprising:

providing, with a NFC controller of the NFC chip, one or more notifications to a processor of the host device of successful and unsuccessful data transmission with the external NFC device.

119. The method of claim 118, further comprising:

emitting a sound via a speaker of the host device according to the one or more notifications.

120. The method of claim 118, further comprising:

displaying a message on a display device of the host device according to the one or more notifications.

121. The method of claim 84, further comprising:

launching, with the host device, at least one software program upon receipt of a message from the external NFC device; and

providing the received data from the message to the launched at least one software program.

122. The method of claim 84, further comprising:

executing, with a processor of the host device, one or more operation of one or more software programs of the host device upon receipt of a message from the external NFC device.

123. A method of communicating between one or more software programs operating on a host device including an antenna and an external near field communication (NFC) reader device including an antenna via a NFC chip within the host device, the method comprising:

generating a NFC interrogation signal with the external NFC reader device;

detecting the NFC interrogation signal generated by the external NFC reader device with the host device'"'"'s antenna and the NFC chip'"'"'s radio frequency (RF) interface when the host device'"'"'s antenna is within a predetermined distance from an RF field emitted from the external NFC reader device'"'"'s antenna;

routing a received message in the interrogation signal from the RF interface to a NFC controller of the NFC chip and to a processor of the host device;

communicating the received message from the processor of the host device to the one or more software programs operating on the host device;

responding, with the one or more software programs, to the received interrogation signal by generating a response and communicating data to the NFC controller via the processor of the host device; and

transmitting the response from the NFC controller and host device'"'"'s antenna to the external NFC reader device.

124. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

managing the operation of the NFC controller of the NFC chip by executing embedded software included in the NFC controller; and

providing, with the embedded software, the NFC controller'"'"'s interface with the host device'"'"'s processor and the one or more software programs operating thereon.

125. The method of claim 124, wherein the embedded software of the NFC controller includes software to provide a contactless communication protocol including at least one of ISO 14443, ISO 15693, NFCIP-1, FeliCa, and NFC.

126. The method of claim 125, further comprising:

performing a read operation on an external NFC tag device via the contactless communication protocol when the NFC chip is in a reader mode.

127. The method of claim 125, further comprising:

transmitting a card credential to the external NFC reader device using the contactless communication protocol between the NFC chip and the external NFC reader device when the NFC chip is operating in a card emulator mode.

128. The method of claim 127, further comprising:

when a wallet application is executed by the processor of the host device, communicating with the NFC chip such that the NFC chip transmits a card credential to the external NFC reader device.

129. The method of claim 128, further comprising:

enabling payments at an external-point of sale system with the wallet application by transmitting the card credential from a memory device of the NFC chip to the external NFC reader device connected to the external point-of-sale system via the NFC chip.

130. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

operating the NFC chip in a peer-to-peer mode; and

exchanging data bidirectionally between the NFC chip and the external NFC reader device.

131. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

modulating and demodulating signals with the RF interface that are respectively transmitted and received by the host device'"'"'s antenna.

132. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

receiving from the NFC reader device, with the RF interface, signals to be modulated and transmitted; and

transmitting demodulated signals from the RF interface to the NFC reader device.

133. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

transmitting demodulated signals with the RF interface to a NFC tag device of the NFC chip, and transmitting a response signal to be modulated and transmitted via the host device'"'"'s antenna.

134. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

generating, with the RF interface, RF signals to be provided to the host device'"'"'s antenna to be transmitted.

135. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

receiving, with the host device'"'"'s antenna, RF signals; and

providing the received RF signals to the RF interface.

136. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

controlling, with the NFC controller, a switch device to switch the NFC chip between a tag mode and a reader mode.

137. The method of claim 136, further comprising:

receiving, with the NFC controller, a switching signal from the host device when the one or more software programs operating on the host device requests that the NFC controller switch between the tag mode and the reader mode.

138. The method of claim 136, further comprising:

coupling the RF interface to a NFC reader device or a NFC tag device of the NFC chip according to the mode set by the switch device.

139. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

when a switch device of the NFC chip switches to a tag mode and the host device'"'"'s antenna coupled to the NFC chip receives the one or more NFC interrogation signals, transmitting one or more NFC response signals that include information that is retrieved from a memory device of the host device or NFC chip.

140. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

receiving signals with the host device'"'"'s antenna coupled to the NFC chip;

demodulating the received signals with the RF interface; and

providing the demodulated signals to a NFC tag device of the NFC chip.

141. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

when a NFC tag device and the RF interface are communicatively connected according to a switch device of the NFC chip, providing signals generated by the NFC tag device to be modulated by the RF interface and to be transmitted by the host device'"'"'s antenna.

142. The method of claim 141, further comprising:

confirming the signals generated by the NFC tag device and transmitted by the host device'"'"'s antenna coupled to the NFC chip according to notifications sent to a NFC controller of the NFC chip and to the processor of the host device.

143. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

updating a memory device of a NFC chip using the processor of the host device.

144. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

activating a NFC reader device of the NFC chip according to a switch device of the NFC chip; and

transmitting one or more NFC interrogation signals and receiving one or more NFC response signals including information from the external NFC tag device.

145. The method of claim 144, further comprising:

providing the one or more NFC response signals received by the host device'"'"'s antenna and provided to the NFC reader device to a NFC controller of the NFC chip.

146. The method of claim 145, further comprising:

providing data from the one or more NFC response signals to the host device'"'"'s processor via the NFC controller,

wherein the data is provided to the one or more software programs executed by a processor on the host device.

147. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

synchronizing operations of the NFC chip with a clock management device.

148. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

providing, with a power management device, access to a power signal of the host device when the NFC chip is switched by a switch device to a reader mode so that the NFC chip can use a power source on the host device to transmit interrogation signals to a target NFC device that is within a predetermined distance from the antenna coupled to the NFC chip.

149. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

customizing interrogation signals with the one or more software programs executed by the host device by sending one or more messages from the host device'"'"'s processor to the external NFC tag device via the host device'"'"'s antenna.

150. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

storing information in a memory device of the NFC chip to be retrieved by the external NFC reader device.

151. The method of claim 150, further comprising:

updating the information stored in the memory device with the one or more software programs executed by the host device'"'"'s processor by sending data via the processor of the host device to the NFC controller.

152. The method of claim 151, further comprising:

providing, with the NFC controller, the data to the memory device to be stored.

153. The method of claim 150, further comprising:

determining access to the memory device according to the one or more predefined programs of one or more software programs executed by the processor of the host device.

154. The method of claim 150, further comprising:

in response to the received interrogation signal, selecting data stored in the memory device with the received message included in the interrogation signal, and transmitting the stored data in the memory device to the external NFC reader.

155. The method of claim 154, further comprising:

transmitting the stored data from the memory device to the external NFC reader device when the host device is without power.

156. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

controlling, with the host device, the operations of the NFC chip and exchanging data with the NFC chip bidirectionally.

157. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

providing, with the NFC controller of the NFC chip, one or more notifications to the processor of the host device of successful and unsuccessful data transmission with the external NFC device.

158. The method of claim 157, further comprising:

emitting a sound via a speaker of the host device according to the one or more notifications.

159. The method of claim 157, further comprising:

displaying a message on a display device of the host device according to the one or more notifications.

160. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

launching, with the processor of the host device, at least one software program upon receipt of a message from the external NFC device; and

providing the received data from the message to the launched at least one software program.

161. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

executing, with a processor of the host device, one or more operations of the one or more software programs of the host device upon receipt of a message from the external NFC device.

162. A near field communication (NFC) chip coupled to an antenna, the NFC chip comprising:

a NFC reader device to selectively receive a signal from an external NFC tag device when the external NFC tag device is within a predetermined distance from the antenna;

a NFC tag device to selectively transmit an NFC response signal to an external NFC reader device when the external NFC reader device is within the predetermined distance from the antenna;

a switch device to switch the NFC chip between a tag mode and a reader mode;

a controller to receive a switching signal from a processor of a host device in response to one or more software programs executed on the host device requiring the NFC chip to switch modes; and

a radio frequency (RF) interface to selectively couple to one of the NFC reader device and the NFC tag device in response to the switching signal.

163. The NFC chip of claim 162, wherein the NFC chip operates in at least one of a reader mode and a tag mode.

164. The NFC chip of claim 163, wherein the reader mode converts the host device into a contactless reader that receives information from an external NFC tag.

165. The NFC chip of claim 163, wherein the tag mode converts the host device into a NFC tag capable of transmitting information in response to a received interrogation signal.

166. The NFC chip of claim 162, wherein the NFC chip operates in at least one of a card emulation mode and a peer-to-peer mode.

167. The NFC chip of claim 166, wherein the card emulation mode allows the NFC tag device to transmit a card credential to the external NFC reader device to initiate a transaction in response to information received by the NFC tag device from the external NFC reader device.

168. The NFC chip of claim 167, wherein the information transmitted by the NFC tag device includes at least one of a payment card, a digital key, and an identification credential.

169. The NFC chip of claim 166, wherein the peer-to-peer mode allows data to be exchanged bidirectionally between the host device and at least one of the external NFC tag device and the external NFC reader device.

170. The NFC chip of claim 162, wherein upon receipt of an external reader interrogation message or a message from the external NFC reader device, executing, with a processor of the host device, one or more operations of the one or more software programs of the host device.

171. A host device, comprising:

a processor to execute one or more software programs;

an antenna to detect an external NFC device;

a near field communication (NFC) chip to selectively send and receive signals to and from an external NFC device based on the executed one or more software programs and when the antenna is within a predetermined distance of the external NFC device; and

a display device to display data based on information encoded within at least one received signal after the one or more software programs processes the at least one received signal.

172. The host device of claim 171, wherein the antenna is coupled to the NFC chip.

173. The host device of claim 171, wherein the processor applies the information encoded within the at least one received signal to automatically execute the one or more software programs and display perceivable data in the display device.

174. The host device of claim 171, wherein the information encoded within the at least one received signal includes a request for at least one of a payment card, a digital key, an identification credential, or other information corresponding to stored data within the host device.

175. The host device of claim 171, wherein the NFC chip comprises:

a NFC reader device to selectively receive the at least one signal from the external NFC tag device;

a NFC tag device to selectively transmit at least one other signal to the external NFC reader device;

a switch device to switch the NFC chip between a tag mode and a reader mode;

a NFC controller to receive a switching signal from the host device'"'"'s processor in response to one or more software programs executed thereon requiring the NFC chip to switch between the tag mode and the reader mode; and

a radio frequency (RF) interface to selectively couple to one of the NFC reader device and the NFC tag device in response to the change in mode of the switch device.

176. The host device of claim 175, wherein the NFC chip includes a configurable memory device that interfaces with the NFC controller.

177. The host device of claim 176, wherein the configurable memory device is updatable by the processor of the host device and one or more software programs executed thereon.

178. The host device of claim 176, wherein the configurable memory device is tamper resistant to prevent an unauthorized user from accessing confidential information from the memory device.
