Abstract

An adjustable radial and ulnar vascular compression wristband assists in achieving partial or full occlusion of a blood vessel when applied to a patient'"'"'s wrist during or following a medical procedure. At least two adjustably inflatable non-adjacent balloons on the wristband apply preferential compression to portions of the circumference of the wrist, including in particular those portions overlying the ulnar and radial arteries.

Claims

1. A wristband for the purpose of achieving patent hemostasis of a puncture site in a blood vessel in a wrist, the wristband including at least a flexible strap having two ends, a securement means for fastening the strap circumferentially around the wrist, and a compression means for applying compression onto said wrist, the compression means more particularly including at least two inflatable non-adjacent balloons, and an inflation means and adjustment means for adjustably inflating at least one of the balloons

2. The securement means of claim 1, which more particularly comprises a hook material placed at one end of the strap and loop material placed at the opposite end of the strap.

3. The strap of claim 1, more particularly being formed as a multiple-layer construction.

4. The inflation means and adjustment means of claim 1, further including at least a tube connecting each of the balloons to a connector/valve, and a syringe or pump removably connectable to the connector/valve.

5. The compression means of claim 1 wherein at least one of the inflatable balloons is located on a cuff that slidably moves along the length of the strap.

6. The wristband of claim 1 further including at least one rigid backing placed between the strap and at least one of the balloons.

7. The wristband of claim 1, which further includes a hemostatic agent attached to the bottom surface of at least one balloon.

8. The inflation means and adjustment means of claim 4, further including a switching means for directing air or gas flow between the balloons.

The inflation means and adjustment means of claim 4, wherein the attachment and operation of the syringe or pump enables adjustable inflation of the balloons thereby increasing or decreasing volumes of air or gas in them to adjust compression preferentially applied by the balloons to portions of the surface of the wrist.

10. A wristband for the purpose of achieving patent hemostasis of a puncture site in an artery in a wrist, the wristband comprising at least:

a flexible strap having two ends, hook and loop material placed at the ends of said strap, two inflatable non-adjacent balloons positioned on the strap and a tube connecting each balloon to a connector, the strap being formed as a multiple-layer construction.

11. The wristband of claim 10 further including a syringe or pump that is removably attachable to a connector.

12. At least one of the balloons of claim 10 more particularly located on a cuff slidably movable across the length of the strap.

The wristband of claim 10, when deployed, wherein compression is adjustably applied preferentially by the balloons placed over the ulnar and radial arteries, by means of air or gas injected into or withdrawn from the balloons by operation of a syringe or pump that is removably attached to a connector.

14. The wristband of claim 10, that further includes a hemostatic agent attached to the bottom surface of at least one balloon.

15. The wristband of claim 11, when deployed, wherein compression is adjustably applied preferentially by the balloons placed over the ulnar and radial arteries, by means of air or gas injected into or withdrawn from the balloons by operation of the syringe or pump.

16. The wristband of claim 12, that further includes a hemostatic agent removably attached to the bottom surface of at least one balloon.

17. A compression means for a wristband used in achieving patent hemostasis of a puncture site in a blood vessel in a wrist that includes at least:

two inflatable non-adjacent balloons;

an inflation means and adjustment means for adjustably inflating the balloons and that further includes a tube connecting each balloon to a connector/valve, and a syringe or pump removably connectable to the connector/valve.

18. The compression means of claim 17 wherein at least one of the balloons is located on a cuff that may slidably move along the length of a wristband.

19. A method of using a wristband, for the purpose of achieving patent hemostasis of a puncture site in a radial artery in a wrist, generally including the following steps:

i) Placing and securing the wristband onto the wrist.

ii) Initially inflating the balloons.

iii) Removing the sheath or cannula from a puncture site in the radial artery of the wrist and fully inflating the balloon over the radial artery.

iv) Adjusting inflation of the balloon overlying the ulnar artery.

v) Achieving patent hemostasis.

vi) Removing the wristband from the wrist.
