Abstract

A biosensor includes a working electrode 101, a counter electrode 102 opposing the working electrode 101, a working electrode terminal 103 and a working electrode reference terminal 10 connected to the working electrode 101 by wires, and a counter electrode terminal 104 connected to the counter electrode 102 by a wire. By employing a structure with at least three electrodes, it is possible to assay a target substance without being influenced by the line resistance on the working electrode side.

49. A biosensor, comprising:

a working electrode disposed on a proximal end of the biosensor;

a counter electrode disposed on the proximal end of the biosensor;

a working electrode terminal on a distal end of the biosensor;

a counter electrode terminal on the distal end of the biosensor;

a first reference terminal on the distal end of the biosensor;

a second reference terminal on the distal end of the biosensor;

a first conductive line connecting the working electrode to the working electrode terminal;

a second conductive line connecting the working electrode to the first reference terminal, at least a portion of the second conductive line disposed outside at least a portion of the first conductive line relative to a centerline that extends between the proximal end and the distal end of the biosensor;

a third conductive line connecting the counter electrode to the counter electrode terminal; and

a fourth conductive line connecting the counter electrode to the second reference terminal, at least a portion of the fourth conductive line disposed outside at least a portion of the third conductive line relative to the centerline.

50. The biosensor of claim 49, wherein:

the second conductive line is provided to enable a voltage at the working electrode to be detected; and

the fourth conductive line is provided to enable a voltage at the counter electrode to be detected.

51. The biosensor of claim 49, wherein the second conductive line and the fourth conductive line are provided to enable a voltage between the working electrode and the counter electrode to be constant.

52. The biosensor of claim 49, wherein at least a portion of the first conductive line is disposed between at least a portion of the second conductive line and at least a portion of the third conductive line on the biosensor.

53. The biosensor of claim 49, wherein at least a portion of the third conductive line is disposed between at least a portion of the first conductive line and at least a portion of the fourth conductive line on the biosensor.

54. The biosensor of claim 49, wherein:

a portion of the first conductive line and the second conductive line is partially shared; and

the partially shared portion is connected to the working electrode.

55. The biosensor of claim 49, wherein:

a portion of the third conductive line and the fourth conductive line is partially shared; and

the shared portion is connected to the counter electrode.

56. The biosensor of claim 49, wherein the counter electrode comprises two fingers.

57. The biosensor of claim 49, wherein:

the counter electrode comprises two fingers; and

the working electrode is provided between the two fingers.

58. The biosensor of claim 49, wherein the first reference terminal is disposed near an outside edge of the biosensor relative to the centerline.

59. The biosensor of claim 49, wherein the second reference terminal is disposed near an outside edge of the biosensor relative to the centerline.

60. The biosensor of claim 49, further comprising an assay reagent applied on the working electrode and on the counter electrode.

61. A device configured to be connected to the biosensor of claim 49 for assaying a concentration of a substance in an assayed fluid based on a current flowing between the working electrode and the counter electrode of the biosensor.

62. A biosensor device, comprising:

a biosensor comprising;

a working electrode disposed on a proximal end of the biosensor;

a counter electrode disposed on the proximal end of the biosensor;

a working electrode terminal on a distal end of the biosensor;

a counter electrode terminal on the distal end of the biosensor;

a first reference terminal on the distal end of the biosensor;

a second reference terminal on the distal end of the biosensor;

a first conductive line connecting the working electrode to the working electrode terminal;

a second conductive line connecting the working electrode to the first reference terminal, at least a portion of the second conductive line disposed outside at least a portion of the first conductive line relative to a centerline that extends between the proximal end and the distal end of the biosensor;

a third conductive line connecting the counter electrode to the counter electrode terminal; and

a fourth conductive line connecting the counter electrode to the second reference terminal, at least a portion of the fourth conductive line disposed outside at least a portion of the third conductive line relative to the centerline; and

a measurement circuit configured to be connected to the biosensor for performing an assay of a fluid to determine the concentration of a substance in the fluid based on a current flowing between the working electrode and the counter electrode of the biosensor.

63. The biosensor device of claim 62, wherein substantially no current flows through the second conductive line and the fourth conductive line during the assay.

64. The biosensor device of claim 62, wherein:

the second conductive line is provided to enable a voltage at the working electrode to be detected; and

the fourth conductive line is provided to enable a voltage at the counter electrode to be detected.

65. The biosensor device of claim 62, wherein the second conductive line and the fourth conductive line are provided to enable a voltage between the working electrode and the counter electrode to be constant.

66. The biosensor device of claim 62, wherein at least a portion of the first conductive line is disposed between at least a portion of the second conductive line and at least a portion of the third conductive line on the biosensor.

67. The biosensor device of claim 62, wherein at least a portion of the third conductive line is disposed between at least a portion of the first conductive line and at least a portion of the fourth conductive line on the biosensor.

68. The biosensor device of claim 62, wherein:

a portion of the first conductive line and the second conductive line is partially shared; and

the shared portion is connected to the working electrode.

69. The biosensor device of claim 62, wherein:

a portion of the third conductive line and the fourth conductive line is partially shared; and

the shared portion is connected to the counter electrode.

70. The biosensor device of claim 62, wherein the counter electrode comprises two fingers.

71. The biosensor device of claim 62, wherein:

the counter electrode comprises two fingers; and

the working electrode is provided between the two fingers.

72. The biosensor device of claim 62, wherein the first reference terminal is disposed near an outside edge of the biosensor relative to the centerline.

73. The biosensor of claim 62, wherein the second reference terminal is disposed near an outside edge of the biosensor relative to the centerline.

74. The biosensor device of claim 62, further comprising an assay reagent applied on the working electrode and on the counter electrode.
