Abstract

Cardiac repair prostheses, sets, and methods for implanting in an aorta are disclosed. Cardiac repair prosthesis sets can include a radially expandable support supporting a unidirectional valve that is configured for implantation into the aortic valve region of a patient and a second radially expandable support for a substantially blood impervious stent having a size and shape for implantation into the ascending aorta of said patient where the unidirectional valve and stent are configured for integration within the patient by at least one joining element. Cardiac repair prostheses can include a radially expandable support supporting a unidirectional valve configured for implantation into the aortic valve region of a patient and a second radially expandable support for a substantially blood impervious stent having a size and shape for implantation into the ascending aorta of said patient where the unidirectional valve and stent are joined by at least one joining element.

Claims

1. A cardiac repair prosthesis set comprising:

a radially expandable support supporting a unidirectional valve configured for implantation into the aortic valve region of a patient; and

a second radially expandable support for a substantially blood impervious stent having a size and shape for implantation into the ascending aorta of said patient;

the unidirectional valve and stent being configured for integration within the patient by at least one joining element.

2. The cardiac repair prosthesis set of claim 1 wherein the at least one joining element effects said integration subsequent to the radial expansion of each of the radially expandable supports.

3. The cardiac repair prosthesis set of claim 1, further comprising at least one joining element to effect said integration.

4. The cardiac repair prosthesis of claim 3, wherein the at least one joining element comprises a suture.

5. The cardiac repair prosthesis of claim 3, wherein the at least one joining element comprises a clip.

6. The cardiac repair prosthesis of claim 5, wherein the clip has a hinge and locking mechanism.

7. The cardiac repair prosthesis of claim 1, wherein the second radially expandable support extends beyond the substantially blood impervious stent.

8. The cardiac repair prosthesis of claim 1, wherein the second radially expandable support and the substantially blood impervious stent are substantially equal in length.

9. The cardiac repair prosthesis of claim 1, wherein the unidirectional valve comprises one or more leaflets.

10. The cardiac repair prosthesis of claim 9, wherein the unidirectional valve comprises two or three leaflets.

11. The cardiac repair prosthesis of claim 9, wherein the one or more leaflets comprise a biological material.

12. The cardiac repair prosthesis of claim 9, wherein the one or more leaflets comprise a synthetic material.

13. The cardiac repair prosthesis of claim 1, wherein the first radially expandable support is partially covered by a material that is substantially impervious to blood.

14. The cardiac repair prosthesis of claim 1, wherein the first radially expandable support is configured for implantation in the aortic annulus of a patient.

28. The method according to claim 10, further comprising positioning the second radially expandable support so that a portion of the second radially expandable support is flush with the interior wall of the aorta at the sinotubular junction of the patient.

15. A cardiac repair prosthesis comprising:

a radially expandable support supporting a unidirectional valve configured for implantation into the aortic valve region of a patient; and

a second radially expandable support for a substantially blood impervious stent having a size and shape for implantation into the ascending aorta of said patient;

the unidirectional valve and stent being joined by at least one joining element.

16. The cardiac repair prosthesis of claim 15 wherein the at least one joining element comprises a suture.

17. The cardiac repair prosthesis of claim 15, wherein the at least one joining element comprises a clip.

18. The cardiac repair prosthesis of claim 17, wherein the clip has a hinge and locking mechanism.

19. The cardiac repair prosthesis of claim 15, wherein the second radially expandable support extends beyond the substantially blood impervious stent.

20. The cardiac repair prosthesis of claim 15, wherein the second radially expandable support and the substantially blood impervious stent are substantially equal in length.

21. The cardiac repair prosthesis of claim 15, wherein the unidirectional valve comprises one or more leaflets.

22. The cardiac repair prosthesis of claim 15, wherein the unidirectional valve comprises two or three leaflets.

23. The cardiac repair prosthesis of any one of claims 21 and 22, wherein the leaflets comprise a biological material.

24. The cardiac repair prosthesis of any one of claims 21 and 22, wherein the leaflets comprise a synthetic material.

25. The cardiac repair prosthesis of claim 15, wherein the first radially expandable support is partially covered by a material that is substantially impervious to blood.

26. The cardiac repair prosthesis of claim 15, wherein the first radially expandable support is configured for implantation in the aortic annulus of a patient.

27. A method for implanting a cardiac repair prosthesis comprising a radially expandable support supporting a unidirectional valve and a second radially expandable support for a substantially blood impervious stent having a size and shape for implantation into the ascending aorta of said patient, the unidirectional valve and stent being joined by at least one joining element, the method comprising:

positioning the first radially expandable support in the aortic valve region aorta of a patient so that the first radially expandable support is secured in the aortic annulus of the patient.

29. A kit for bioimplantable aortic valve and ascending aortic stent assemblies comprising:

a plurality of implantable aortic valves in at least two different sizes or conformations;

a plurality of implantable stents having a size and conformation suitable for implantation into the ascending aorta in at least two different sizes or conformations; and

, optionally, material for fastening an aortic valve to an aortic stent prior to implantation.

30. The kit according to claim 29, wherein the material comprises a biocompatible clip.

31. The kit according to claim 29, wherein the material comprises suturing material.

32. The kit according to claim 30, wherein the aortic valve and the stents are configured to self-entangle.
