Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention relate to a method, program product, and system for managing the percentage of unpopulated cells in a multidimensional data structure during the servicing of multidimensional analytical queries. In an embodiment, a multidimensional data structure is stored in a memory location of a computing device, wherein the multidimensional data structure includes a dimension that is a subset of a plurality of dimensions included in a relational database. The computing device determines a frequency of utilization of a dimension to service a multidimensional query request. The computing device combines the dimension with the multidimensional data structure responsive to the frequency of utilization.

7. A computer program product, the computer program product comprising a computer readable storage medium having program code embodied therewith, the program code executable by a processor to:

determine a frequency of utilization of a dimension to service a multidimensional query request, wherein a multidimensional data structure is stored in a memory location included in a computing device that includes the processor, and wherein the multidimensional data structure includes a dimension that is a subset of a plurality of dimensions included in a relational database; and

combine the dimension with the multidimensional data structure responsive to the frequency of utilization.

8. The computer program product of claim 7, wherein the multidimensional data structure includes dimensions of a predetermined cardinality.

9. The computer program product of claim 8, wherein the predetermined cardinality is one of the following:

lower than a predetermined cardinality threshold value or range;

equal to a predetermined cardinality threshold value or range; and

higher than a predetermined cardinality threshold value or range.

10. The computer program product of claim 7, wherein the multidimensional query request is drafted in a query language that is capable of specifying multivariate, multilevel, and/or multidimensional relationships.

11. The computer program product of claim 7, wherein the multidimensional query request is drafted in a multidimensional expressions query language or multidimensional query language.

12. The computer program product of claim 7, wherein the multidimensional data structure is a pre-computed projection of a relational database management system relation or a multidimensional online analytical processing cube.

13. A computer system comprising:

one or more computer processors;

one or more computer-readable storage media;

program instructions stored on the computer-readable storage media for execution by at least one of the one or more processors, the program instructions comprising;

program instructions to determine a frequency of utilization of a dimension to service a multidimensional query request, wherein a multidimensional data structure is stored in a memory location included in a computing device that includes the one or more processors, and wherein the multidimensional data structure includes a dimension that is a subset of a plurality of dimensions included in a relational database; and

combine the dimension with the multidimensional data structure responsive to the frequency of utilization.

14. The computer system of claim 13, wherein the multidimensional data structure includes dimensions of a predetermined cardinality.

15. The computer system of claim 14, wherein the predetermined cardinality is one of the following:

lower than a predetermined cardinality threshold value or range;

equal to a predetermined cardinality threshold value or range; and

higher than a predetermined cardinality threshold value or range.

16. The computer system of claim 13, wherein the multidimensional query request is drafted in a query language that is capable of specifying multivariate, multilevel, and/or multidimensional relationships.

17. The computer system of claim 13, wherein the multidimensional query request is drafted in a multidimensional expressions query language or multidimensional query language.

18. The computer system of claim 13, wherein the multidimensional data structure is a pre-computed projection of a relational database management system relation or a multidimensional online analytical processing cube.
