Abstract

A medical therapy device comprises: a housing; a controller positioned within the housing for monitoring a condition of a patient based on a signal received from at least one sensor associated with the patient and initiating a treatment based on the condition of the patient; and at least one indication mechanism provided on the housing and configured to provide an indication to the patient of at least one condition of at least one of the medical therapy device, the at least one sensor, and the patient. The at least one indication mechanism is visible without manipulation of the housing of the medical therapy device.

Claims

1. A medical therapy device comprising:

a housing;

a controller positioned within the housing for monitoring a condition of a patient based on a signal received from at least one sensor associated with the patient and initiating a treatment based on the condition of the patient; and

at least one indication mechanism provided on the housing and configured to provide an indication to the patient of at least one condition of at least one of the medical therapy device, the at least one sensor, and the patient,

wherein the at least one indication mechanism is apparent without manipulation of the housing of the medical therapy device.

2. The medical therapy device of claim 1, wherein the at least one indication mechanism is a light emitting diode (LED).

3. The medical therapy device of claim 2, wherein the LED is mounted on a printed circuit board positioned within the housing and a light pipe directs light produced by the LED to a lens mounted on the housing such that the light produced by the LED is visible outside of the housing.

4. The medical therapy device of claim 1, wherein a first indication mechanism and a second indication mechanism are provided on the housing.

5. The medical therapy device of claim 4, wherein the first indication mechanism is an LED having a first color and the second indication mechanism is an LED having a second color.

6. The medical therapy device of claim 4, wherein the first indication mechanism provides an indication to the patient that the medical therapy device is active and operating properly.

7. The medical therapy device of claim 4, wherein the second indication device provides an indication that action is required by the patient.

8. The medical therapy device of claim 7, wherein a notification describing the action that is required by the patient is provided on a display screen of the medical therapy device when the second indication device is activated.

9. The medical therapy device of claim 1, further comprising at least one response mechanism associated with the housing and configured to delay delivery of a therapy when actuated by the patient.

10. The medical therapy device of claim 9, wherein the at least one response mechanism further comprises an LED positioned therein such that at least a top surface of the response mechanism can be illuminated to provide an indication to the patient that the at least one response mechanism requires actuation.

11. The medical therapy device of claim 1, wherein the at least one indication mechanism is provided on a top surface of the housing.

18. The wearable defibrillator of claim 4, wherein the second indication device provides an indication that action is required by the patient.

12. A wearable defibrillator comprising:

at least one sensor configured to detect a health disorder of the patient;

at least one treatment element configured to deliver therapy to a patient;

at least one indication mechanism configured to provide an indication; and

at least one controller operatively connected to the at least one sensor, the at least one treatment element, and the at least one indication mechanism for monitoring a condition of a patient based on a signal received from at least one sensor associated with the patient, initiating a treatment through the at least one treatment element based on the condition of the patient, and providing an indication to the patient through the at least one indication mechanism of a status of at least one of the at least one sensor, the at least one treatment element, and the patient,

wherein the at least one indication mechanism is apparent without manipulation of the wearable defibrillator.

13. The wearable defibrillator of claim 12, wherein the at least one indication mechanism is an LED.

14. The wearable defibrillator of claim 13, wherein the LED is mounted on a printed circuit board positioned within the housing and a light pipe directs light produced by the LED to a lens mounted on a housing of the wearable defibrillator such that the light produced by the LED is visible outside of the housing.

15. The wearable defibrillator of claim 12, wherein the at least one indication mechanism comprises a first indication mechanism and a second indication mechanism.

16. The wearable defibrillator of claim 15, wherein the first indication mechanism is an LED having a first color and the second indication mechanism is an LED having a second color.

17. The wearable defibrillator of claim 12, wherein the first indication mechanism provides an indication to the patient that the wearable defibrillator is active and operating properly.

19. A method of delivering therapy to a patient using a portable medical therapy device, the portable medical therapy device comprising a controller coupled with at least one indication mechanism, the method comprising:

detecting, by at least one sensor of the portable medical therapy device, at least one physiological parameter having at least one value indicative of a health disorder of the patient;

indicating to a patient with the at least one indication mechanism that is apparent to the patient without manipulation of the portable medical therapy device at least one condition of at least one of the portable medical therapy device, the at least one sensor, and the patient; and

one of administering therapy and delaying administration of therapy based on a response from the patient to the indication.

20. The method according to claim 19,

wherein the at least one sensor comprises at least one electrocardiogram (ECG) sensor coupled with the controller;

and

wherein detecting, by the portable medical therapy device, the at least one physiological parameter includes detecting an ECG signal.

21. The method according to claim 19, wherein the portable medical therapy device is configured to deliver at least one defibrillating shock to the patient via at least one therapy pad coupled with the controller.

22. The method of claim 19, wherein the at least one indication mechanism comprises a first indication mechanism and a second indication mechanism.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the first indication mechanism is an LED having a first color and the second indication mechanism is an LED having a second color.

24. The method of claim 22, wherein the first indication mechanism provides an indication to the patient that the medical therapy device is active and operating properly.

25. The method of claim 22, wherein the second indication device provides an indication that action is required by the patient.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein a notification describing the action that is required by the patient is provided on a display screen of the portable medical therapy device when the second indication device is activated.

27. A wearable defibrillator comprising:

a housing;

a controller positioned within the housing for monitoring a condition of a patient based on a signal received from at least one sensor associated with the patient and initiating a treatment based on the condition of the patient; and

at least one indicator associated with the housing and configured to provide at least one of an audible indication and a visual indication to the patient of at least one condition of at least one of the medical therapy device, the at least one sensor, and the patient.

28. The wearable defibrillator of claim 27, wherein the visual indication comprises visual prompts provided on a display screen of the wearable defibrillator.

29. The wearable defibrillator of claim 28, wherein the visual prompt comprises at least one of an instruction displayed on the display screen and a flashing light provided on the display screen.

30. The wearable defibrillator of claim 29, wherein the audible indication comprises audible prompts provided by a speaker associated with the wearable defibrillator.

31. The wearable defibrillator of claim 30, wherein the audible prompts comprise at least one of oral instructions and sounds.

32. The wearable defibrillator of claim 31, wherein the oral instructions comprise at least one of automated instructions recorded on the wearable defibrillator and manual instructions provided by a person at a central monitoring station.

33. The wearable defibrillator of claim 32, wherein at least one of the audible indication and the visual indication is coordinated with an indication mechanism comprising at least one LED.
